Help writing realistic recovery from alcoholism?
So for context, Character A is basically a guardian deity of this small community, he's a big partier and cares deeply for the people he watches over, Character B is a priestess that cares for his shrine and is his lover.
One day, the antagonist of the story sends his minions out to attack the community, they're easily fended off, but one slips a stronger than usual batch of alcohol laced with sleeping solution into A's supply, so when A throws his victory party, he is knocked unconscious and more of the antagonist's forces show up and butcher most of the town while A is out of it. B was out gathering supplies in the nearby forest when this happened, so she comes back to a ruined town, a depressed A, who now has now turned to the bottle to cope with his failure.
I was wondering how to write A's recovery with B and the remainder of the town's support realistically, B loves him and the town obviously doesn't blame him once they discover the cause of A being unconscious during the attack, but A doesn't forgive HIMSELF. It's my first time writing something like this so I want to approach it tactfully and not have A's recovery feel cheap or unearned.
