Lighting questions for kitchen remodel

Remodeling my kitchen from 1980; pics 1 & 2 show the current state. (If you look closely at the upper row of cabinets, you can figure out the reason for the remodel!) Remodel will be kinda-sort like the pictures in the obvious AI renders (pics 3 & 4) overall. White cabinets, hardwood-look floor (kitchen only, despite the render), soapstone countertops, and either a white subway backsplash or something moderately more ornamental. Beige paint in the diningroom will remain.

I'm replacing both the dining room chandelier and the flush mount light in the kitchen itself.

Questions:

Since the upper cabinets are going away (although the soffit will remain, sadly), is it a good idea to try and get the same fixture for both locations?

What style would you suggest for the fixtures?

I've also included a picture of a Tiffany styled lamp that I inherited from my folks. I think it would be cool to keep that theme going. Doable?

Cabinet Hardware questions

So I've just paid my contractor a chunk to finalize the structural design of the kitchen. The render is not 100% accurate, but the basics are correct:

  • White cabinets
  • Soapstone counters, or possibly a black granite of some type.
  • Some type of wood-look flooring. Shooting for dark and somewhat distressed looking, probably darker than the render.
  • Backsplash will likely have something more retro/vintage looking than plain white subway tiles, but that's to be decided.

Overall mood I'm going for is a mix of farmhouse/rustic with some accents of Edwardian/Victorian. My goal is to recreate the vibe of a really nice ice cream shop that's been around for a hundred years! But I'll be adding those elements with accents like a rug and lighting fixtures rather than the basics. I am completely avoiding any suggestions of modernism/minimalism, etc.

Anyway, my contractor design guy gave me some homework to pick out hardware.

Pulls
I'm 95% likely to go with the pulls in the image. I think they hit that farmhouse/rustic casual vibe perfectly without looking too "cracker barrel."

Here's where I'm stuck:

Round knobs vs. square knobs?
I love the look of square - they are more sophisticated and distinctive -- but I'm worried they might get misaligned and out of rotation, looking janky. Is this a realistic concern?

Matte Black vs. Oil Rubbed Bronze finish?
I'm really not sure here at all. [Please don't suggest chrome/nickel/brass/gold/pewter etc. I am not interested.] What's the current wisdom about hardware finishing these days?

Curious to hear people's thoughts.

Take 2 - what cabs, counters, backsplash, and flooring do you like?

Which scheme do you like best?

Thanks for all the feedback on my first set of images. I've refined my renders a bit to give a better sense of the space and to reflect my current thinking on the impending choices. My goal is to get a traditional / farmhouse look with possible hints of Victorian.

A few caveats:

  • These were rendered with the tool at cabinets.com, which is easy to use but limited in many respects
  • In reality there's a soffit. I lowered the ceiling in the software b/c that's as close as I can get.
  • The layout is still kind of janky and would need tweaking to generate real plans. For instance, there's a weird little gap in the counter in the back left corner, stuff isn't aligned correctly, the big double window is actually a bay window, etc.
  • In reality there will be a dishwasher in the left bank of cabs
  • The choice of tiles for both the backsplash and the floor are just rough approximations. The blue backsplash, in particular, is a little loud for my needs. But the idea is to use blue as the focal point.
  • The tile floor looks "off" because there aren't any baseboards in the renders. I did not find a way to add them, but they would definitely help.

What cabinets for condo upgrade?

So ten days ago I got home and discovered that my ceiling- mounted cabs were no longer quite as ceiling-mounted. Derp. This condo was built in 1980 and I believe it's 100% original. Builder grade particle cabinets are collapsing, so it's time.

Anyway, I'm playing with ideas for new cabinets and these are the three options in the lead:

  • White cabs + black stone countertops (quartz or granite, idc)
  • upper white cabs, lower black cabs, white stone countertops
  • all natural wood cabs, charcoal countertops

I'm shooting for a traditional or farmhouse vibe, this being in rural New England. Unfortunately I don't have funds for a full appliance replacement. The renders obviously aren't super accurate as there's no way to put in a soffit, but I hope these convey general impressions.

Kitchen remodeling questions

Heyas,

I'm going to be renovating my kitchen sometime in the fall and had some specific questions

  1. I live in a second story condominium with neighbors directly below. My dream would be to install stone or tile flooring, but I understand that this is a bad idea for my situation because I won't easily be able to reinforce the floor if that's necessary. Does anyone have any insight? If it's a bad idea, my next options would be wood or PVT. I dislike the idea of wood because it seems more difficult to maintain... ish.

  2. I'll be getting the cabinets replaced for sure. Is it better to change the flooring before or after the cabinets - and does this depend on material? I have read conflicting opinions in my research

  3. Right now, I'll probably go with a natural maple finish for the cabinets and a warm gray or black - ish quartz countertop. Can anyone point me to a "style guide" for advice on flooring choices that would look good?

Thanks all!

Best way to get a kitchen remodeledd

This is a small kitchen in a colchester condo. Kitchen dates from 1979 and is original low-quality particle board. Long overdue for a refresh.

The "easiest" option would be to go through Lowes or Home Depot for a one-stop-shop for everything - cabinets, floor, and countertops. BUT, I've read horror stories about going this route.

I am in no way handy, crafty, or interested in DIY.

TL/DR: Any recommendations for a reliable kitchen remodeler in the area?

Visual feedback like Keymapp?

I got a Voyager about a month ago, but I'm thinking about going down to a Corne or similar for a travel keyboard. [Voyager is great, but I'd like to try a choc-spaced compact w/o number row)

For the voyager, there's a little utility called keymapp that gives immediate feedback on what layer and key are activated. Does such a thing exist for other boards?

Heyas,

I'm a high school social studies teacher, been doing it for twenty five years and have ten more to go.

There's an opportunity to get licensed to teach CS for free. Two year, part time program, five classes.

Am I insane for considering this?

More details about me...

  • I don't have much formal experience in computer stuff beyond dabbling.
  • I have taken many intro to html coding courses
  • Taught myself the basics of actionscript (the language used by old flash apps)
  • Just started teaching myself Python. Started with freeCodeCamp and now making my own stuff.

I'm not worried about the teaching part... I can sit through staff meetings and kid wrangle with the best of them. I'm worried about the technical, crunchy bits.

Is this doable?
