The Broken Guide #1: Hair loss; what men should know

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. This is not medical advice and nobody should start any medication based on a Reddit post. This guide is based on years of personal research, reading, asking questions, comparing treatments, and going through various hair loss treatments myself.

Introduction

This topic comes up repeatedly on r/lebanon with men asking about thinning hair, finasteride, minoxidil and their side effects. So this is a simple starting point guide for our male members who want to understand their options without getting lost in medical jargon or "miracle product" bullshit.

This first column is not about selling you fake promises. It is about understanding the basic options before you waste years doing nothing and regretting it later.

What causes male hair loss?

The main reason for us losing hair is usually a combination of genetics and a hormone called DHT. This hormone that is a derivative from testosterone (through 5-alpha-reductase conversion) is found in women as well but at much lower quantities.

In genetically predisposed men, some hair follicles are sensitive to DHT or become more sensitive over time causing the hair follicles to shrink, the hair to become thinner, and eventually for some areas to stop producing normal hair altogether.

Real, scientifically proven treatments usually revolve around the following two concepts:

1-Reduce the hormone (DHT) attack on the hair follicles.

2-Stimulate the follicles to grow stronger/thicker hair.

That is exactly where finasteride/dutasteride and minoxidil come in.

Finasteride: the loss prevention medication

Fina's job is to reduce circulating DHT, plain and simple.

For many men finasteride helps slow down hair loss. Some men also regrow some hair.. but the main goal is usually preservation. So basically, if you still have hair, finasteride can help you keep more of it.

But it is not for free. There exist possible side effects that include sexual issues, ejaculation changes, and in fewer cases mood changes. Most men don’t get serious side effects, but some do, and should consult the doctor if any issues arises.

Dutasteride: the stronger alternative

Dutasteride is similar in action to finasteride but stronger.

A simple way to understand it is that finasteride mainly blocks the most important type of the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT. Du(two)tasteride blocks two types of that enzyme. That means dutasteride lowers DHT more than finasteride which can make it a powerful option for some men, especially when finasteride is not enough.

Since it reduces DHT at even lower levels, the side effects could possibly be more prevalent that with Finasteride.

Minoxidil: the growth stimulator

Minoxidil does not lower DHT. It works differently. It helps stimulate hair growth through not quite fully understood mechanisms. There are two main versions, topical and oral.

Topical Minox is the liquid or foam you apply to your scalp, usually at 5% concentration for men.

It can help with thinning areas especially at the crown, and sometimes at the hairline too. But you need to apply it twice a day and with consistency. At the beginning some people shed more hair, this is normal and expected. You usually need at least 3 months of twice a day applications to start noticing results.

Side effects include scalp irritation, dandruff and scalp dryness.

Oral Minoxidil is the pill version of the same molecule. This could be useful, especially for people who hate applying liquid every day or who get scalp irritation from topical minoxidil. Usual dose could be as low as 1.25mg twice a day, and as high as 5mg twice a day.

But oral minoxidil is has more serious side effects profile than topical minoxidil. Even at a low dose of total 2.5mg per day, it can affect blood pressure, heart rate, and can cause unwanted hair growth on the face or body.

Final thought

Hair loss is not the end of the world but being willfully blond and pretending it is not happening does not help either. Some men look great bald. Some men prefer to fight for their hair. Both choices are valid.

The idea is to treat your hair early instead of waiting until the situation becomes much harder to fix. Do not panic. Do not buy every miracle oil you see on social media w3al TikTok.

The idea is simple..stop the loss as early as possible and if you are lucky, regrow some of what you already lost. The earlier you act the better your chances usually are.

So if you are serious about it, consult a dermatologist, understand your options properly, ask about the possible side effects and choose a plan that you can actually stick to long term.

This guide is not meant to be a complete textbook on hair loss. It simply covers the basics, the whys and hows. If you have any questions, feel free to post them in the comments section.

Clarification regarding misrepresentation of our sub

It has come to our attention that an SSNP idiot who was temporarily banned yesterday from r/lebanon has posted elsewhere claiming that he was banned for "criticizing the Prime Minister of Lebanon."

That is false.

The ban was not issued because this tool criticized the Prime Minister or any public official. Criticism of politicians happens daily on this subreddit, and this is what the essence of most posts are. Disagreement is not an exception, it is the norm.

The actual reason for the ban was a specific comment in which this buffoon explicitly argued that “the only solution is for the Lebanese state to dissolve,” described Lebanese as being self-hating, described our identity as being a "zionist colonial anti-self identity," whatever the fuck that word salad means, and called for a political project aimed at completely dissolving Lebanon and for us to be ruled by a broader Arab imperially ideological project.

That is not ordinary political criticism. That is advocacy for the erasure of our country as a sovereign entity and the delegitimization of our Lebanese identity itself.

Our subreddit is called r/lebanon. Heated debating is baked in our DNA. We allow harsh criticisms, unpopular opinions, and attacks on our political class. But we draw the line at calling for Lebanon to stop existing. We will never allow anyone to use this subreddit to disrespect us as people, dismiss us as a nation, or deny our proudly distinct identity, our history, our culture or our right to exist.

Does anyone of you do this?

Why do these fragfluencers sniff the perfume like that, like they are trying to unclok the hidden nuclear projection code to a 20$ bottle?

Is it performative theatrics to give themselves “scent authority”?

Like if you go to a random store and do this, what guarantees do you have that there is any residual scent left in the cap or nozzle and that you are not just smelling plastic? I tried to smell my perfume this way and the smell became more confusing than anything else.

To me skin > strip > air

Does anyone else smell their perfumes the fragfluencers way?

What's changing on June 1

Premium request units, or PRUs, will be replaced by GitHub AI Credits which are a monthly allotment of credits consumed based on token consumption (input, output, and cached tokens) according to the listed API rates per model. This change aligns Copilot pricing with actual usage and is an important step toward a sustainable, reliable Copilot business and experience for all users.

Copilot code review’s agentic architecture runs on GitHub Actions. Copilot code review will now consume GitHub Actions minutes, in addition to GitHub AI Credits. These minutes are billed at the same per-minute rates as other GitHub Actions workflows.

Fallback experiences will no longer be available. Under the new model, usage will instead be governed by available credits.

Your plan pricing is unchanged: Copilot Pro remains $10/month and Pro+ remains $39/month, and each includes $10 and $39 in monthly AI Credits, respectively. Code completions and next edit suggestions stay included in all plans and do not use AI Credits. For other features, you'll need to wait for your monthly included usage to reset, purchase additional usage, or upgrade your plan.
