My Nostalgia Room [updated]

An updated look of my nostalgia game room/office that I shared 11 months ago. It is a space I created entirely for me surrounded by the things I have collected and loved from my childhood to present day. It is where I work, relax, unwind, and reset.

RCA 20F424T curb find follow up [read]

Model: RCA 20F424T

This was my first curb find from this post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/crt/s/IQbqWvJUyk

After finding it out in the rain I let it dry out for a week before I plugged in and tested anything. I opened it up and was able to determine the plastic leg to trigger the power button on the board was snapped which is likely why it ended out on the curb. I'll need to rig something up at some point to fix it but since this model TV requires a remote to change inputs I ordered one and will just use that to power it on when it arrives.

In the meantime to test it without the ability to change inputs I busted out the old childhood RF adapters and switched over to channel 3. The TV started up perfectly, it's plenty bright, the speakers sounded good, no warping, no flicker, no tinting, etc. I also stole the antenna from my Orion TV1334 to test the built in digital tuner and was able to pick up 34 channels. The first one I was greeted by George Lopez. Now just have to wait for the remote to arrive so I can test the component input and see what this TV can really offer.

My very first curb find! [RCA 20F424T]

Was always envious of the curb find posts others have shared and never expected it would happen for me. Well today I took my dog for a walk in our neighborhood while there was a break in the rain and stumbled upon a 2007 RCA 20F424T on the last part of our loop. I ran home with the pup and grabbed the truck and now it sits in the garage. Unfortunately it got exposed to heavy rain so I will need to give it time to dry before I clean it up and give it a test🤞

When your team rips & you have to hold the line 😭

Just as it says. My team decided to rip the main objective while the entire enemy team was still up. I did everything I could to hinder, disrupt, and keep the space. Absolute panic.

Guidance request for my space, setup, and next upgrades.

The current setup (5.1):

  • Pioneer VSX-534 receiver
  • $249 JAMO Studio 8 theater in a box set: S803, S801, SC81 (yes I know...)
  • Kanto SUB6 subwoofer
  • Epson Home Cinema 3800 projector.

This was my first entry setup from three years ago where projector budget was prioritized over sound.

The issue: The common open concept living space and no other available dedicated space in the home. I understand I will never get a dedicated space quality but there is always room for improvement.

The goal: Take the next steps in the upgrade path to better fill the space and feel some bass (not a chest punch amount) for game and movie immersion.

The next steps:

  • Fronts: ELAC 3.0 DB63 (purchased already, couldn't pass up a good open box sale)
  • Surrounds: Elac 3.0 DB53 (hard set on)
  • Center: ELAC 3.0 DC63 (hard set on)
  • Sub (ported): SVS PB-1000 Pro, RSL 10MKII? (open to recommendations)
  • Receiver: Onkyo TX-RZ30, Integra DRX 3.4? (open to recommendations, eventually plan to do 5.2.4)

The why (the ELACs): After a week of watching many videos, reading many reviews, reddit threads, etc. of speakers in that budget range they are said to be room filling, expansive, and good for medium to large rooms which sounded like the best fit for my case and my budget. Also for consistent sound-stage / timbre matching.

The placement: Due to working with wall lengths, not wanting speakers out in the open floor areas, and making use of corners I have my existing setup placed as pictured and aimed at the main listening position at ear level. I also attempted to follow online guidance rules such as creating the triangle, keeping speakers certain distance from walls, did the sub crawl, and used Pioneer’s MCACC mic calibration, but options are limited, I'm not well experienced/versed, and I'm only an average listener so I'm sure I've made some sub optimal decisions or mistakes. The Kallax furniture unit is open backed but plan to replace it to open more space on both sides so new equipment is not sitting in it or in front of it.

The questions:

  • Since I have some encapsulation with the 4 walls and 9ft ceiling creating a mostly boxed space are my directional audio losses not as bad as they could be in this space?
  • Should I keep everything pointed towards the listening spot or straight towards the wall?
  • Are my equipment choices not adequate/ideal for this space?
  • What optimization tweaks can I make?
  • What else can I do to improve?

I'm seeking any wisdom, guidance, and honesty as someone that would like to learn more and enjoy the process and journey. I'm building this over time through sales/used/refurbished with the aim to keep each component below $500 excluding the subwoofer and receiver which demand a bit more.
