[NASCAR.Com] Hauler Talk: 25,000 Chase simulations and why the top six is so important

There's more in the podcast, but some interesting takeaways the article mentions:

  • Instead of looking at how The Chase would have unfolded in past seasons (given that those results were based on the prior playoff structures)... predictive modeling (based on drivers’ historical performances at each track) was used to determine Chase outcomes.

  • In more than 35% of the Racing Insights models, the champion was the top seed, and the top three seeds accounted for 69% of the simulated titles. In 70% of the simulations, the champion also scored the most points in the final 10 races.

The inaugural 2016 truck series Chase class was insanely stacked

Five champions with a combined seven National Series titles, three crown jewel wins, and a future NASCAR executive.

Edit: If it’s hard to tell… From left to right: Timothy Peters, Matt Crafton, Johnny Sauter, William Byron, Ben Kennedy (yes, THE Ben Kennedy), Daniel Hemric, John Hunter Nemechek, and Christopher Bell. (Thanks, u/KayTeaGirl)

I... I enjoyed the show yesterday

Hides

Haven't listened as much as normal just because of busier life recently, but I pulled up my YouTube TV recording of the NBCSN version, locked my phone to listen to it like a podcast and had a great time.

Zas plays the second-chair role wonderfully, and the movie quotes bit with Greg was great. The comedic choices on the cuts to break they do on the NBCSN version made me laugh almost every time, and were sometimes almost ESPN Radio-era level.

Yes, I know: $2 in the bucket, and a 5 minute major for positivity. I'm also walking to the ocean holding the instant death helmet while typing this so I think that's enough punishment for my behavior.

Pay the whales, save the teachers.
