Has my bug failed and gone mouldy?

Hi All,

Just looking for a bit of first-timer help!

I’ve been feeding my first ever ginger bug for 5 days now. After the first couple of days I thought I saw some very small bubbles developing, but then nothing.

This morning there was what looked like a chunky white layer sat on the surface, and I’m not sure if it means my bug has gone mouldy or if it’s a normal part of the process. It doesn’t smell ‘off’ but still very gingery and a bit yeasty (although I may just be hoping that).

I’ve attached a pic from around day 2 and a couple from just now showing the layer sat on the top.

Does this look normal and should I persevere, or should I start again?

Thanks!

Help to identify chilli plants

Hi All,

I posted some pics of my plants a few weeks ago as a progress update, but the more fruits they grow the more I don’t have a clue what types of chilli they are 🤣.

I thought I was growing Prairy Fire and Cherry Bomb, but they don’t look like either of those based on what I can see online.

Does anyone have any idea what they might be???

Ants in my plants

Just went to dead head one of my plants and a couple of the stems with dead flowers are smothered in ants, sat there holding on.

Does anyone have an idea of what’s going on and should I let the ants do what they’re doing, or cut off the stems and chuck them away (with the ants!).

Plants holding up after holidays

After following the community for a while and picking up bits of advice, I thought I’d give a quick update on this year’s chilli growing!

I didn’t even grow any last year after trying to overwinter a few plants and failing miserably.

This year I planted a few seeds and kept the best looking plants.

The short bushy ones are Prairie Fire (if I got the correct seeds) and I’ve been wanting to grow these for ages for the colourful fruits and compact growth.

I’ve got one Scotch Bonnet, which again I’ve tried to grow a few times but never got one to this stage - this was the only one that germinated and seems to be doing ok.

I can’t actually remember what the tall ones are, but they’re flowering and fruiting so let’s see.

I’ve been away for a week, and gave them a good soaking before I left, moving them to a cooler and shady space (they usually live in the conservatory). They’re currently soaking up some water so a couple are still looking a bit droopy.

I’ve also been pollinating them with a small paintbrush, which seems to have been working. A bit gutted that a lot of un-pollinated flowers dropped off when I got back from holiday, but there still seem to be plenty of flowers.

Anyway, thanks to all the posters in here for the bits of advice!

Reset house alarm showing ‘Service due’

Does anybody have an idea how do reset this home alarm?

I had the power turned off to install a solar system and turns out the rechargeable battery was dead. I’ve replaced the battery but now I can’t clear this alert.

It seems ridiculous to have to call the alarm company out just to clear the message!

CT clamp query - new install EV charging from battery

Hi All,

Just after a bit of advice here if anyone has a spare minute. I’ll run this past my installer tomorrow, but no harm in getting some views from the group in the meantime.

I already have an EV and had solar and a battery fitted last week. Everything is working fine apart from one issue - I charged my EV for the first time since the install last night, and could see that my battery was discharging as well as pulling from the grid. I’m on an EV tariff, so just want to pull from the grid and let the battery take care of the house.

I’ve attached a photo of the meter box below showing the connections:
- The cables exiting to the bottom left go to the stand-alone EV charger fuse box.
- The cables exiting to the right, halfway down, go to the inverter.
- The cables exiting top right go to the consumer unit.

Am I right in thinking that there is just an issue here with the CT clamps?

Both of them are attached to the same live wire coming out of the meter and into the box with two switches in the top right (not sure of terminology). Should the CT clamp linked to the inverter just be attached to the live that feeds into the consumer unit, so the inverter is only looking at the electricity draw from the house?

If this is the case, is it something I could easily fix myself (ie moving the clamp from one wire to another), or should I get the installer to do it? Alternatively, am I barking up the wrong tree and best just getting the installer back anyway?

Cheers

Battery install location

Hi All,

I’m getting panels and a battery installed next week and have just been creating some space in the garage for the battery and inverter to go against the wall.

The battery is a Fox ESS 12.

Im thinking of placing against the wall in the photo, and it will sit in front of the mains gas pipe shown. When the engineer came around to provide the initial quote, he saw the proposed location and was happy that it could go here or on the opposite side of the garage (the proposed location is closer to the consumer unit and the elec and gas meters are on the other side of the wall).

I’m having a concern in my head that the team will turn up and think it’s a bad idea to have the battery so close to the gas pipe… what do you think?
