Unexpected results - did I still make cider?
Amateur homebrewer here, just kind of tinkering to figure out a recipe I can call my own, but I did not expect such a high ABV in my latest brew. Not sure it’s even cider still, maybe it’s apple wine?
1 gallon apple juice
28g brown sugar (usually dont add any sugar for fermentation. I expected a bump, but not this high)
1 packet Lalvin QA23 yeast (normally I use Safcider AC-4, but LHBS closed and these were cheap on Amazon)
Fermented two weeks. SG was 1.125. It went to 1.000 as of today for an ABV of 16.4% if my math is correct. It tastes good enough that I’m interested in continuing, but wanted to get others ideas and opinions on what I actually made.
Edit: thanks for all of the help. I figured out the issue - I wrote down the Brix reading as the gravity. OG was actually about 1.052, ABV is around 6.8%.
Such a huge difference!
For those asking about the seat extender brackets I mentioned last week, this is all they are. Moves the seat back 1.5-2” or so and makes all the difference in leg room for us taller fellas (and ladies) and they install in about 15 minutes.
Refilling 5 lb tank ELI5
Edit: I want to do this using dry ice, not a larger tank.
Long story short my LHBS closed so I’m looking for a new way to have my 5 LB tank refilled to feed my fizzy water addiction.
I assume this process is basically to open an empty tank, toss it on a scale and add 5 lbs of dry ice to it, but is there anything else to know?
Do you guys buy a block of dry ice and break it up, or do places sell pellets or something?
I know no touchy, I’ll be wearing a clean pair of gloves.
My 84 Grand Prix - introduction that I forgot to post
i traded my 79 Malibu for this and a 2017 Equinox back in February. I am so proud of how far this little ride has come in the past few months. From being off the road 30 years (emissions tag is from 95) and partially taken apart to running almost flawlessly, this thing is amazing! She’s still dirty even though she got a bit of a scrub - the interior is still gross - but the paint looks pretty decent.
When I got her, the engine was half torn apart so I had to figure out where everything went, replace the carb and fuel pump and replace the fuel/brake hard lines and tires. All of the electronics work, except the AC, which is probably just low on R12. The motor and trans work perfectly. She stays cool and with the new tires and brake/fuel lines, she drives and stops smoothly.
She still needs work (shocks, sway bar endlinks, etc) but nothing that will stop me from enjoying her all summer… as soon as the AC is fixed at least! I put almost 200 miles on her this weekend alone without a single issue!!!
84 Grand Prix first trip home
Well, not exactly how I pictured her first trip home would go, but she made it! Now we hang out here a while before heading out to get new tires.
I have to figure out the HVAC first I think. No defroster when it’s raining like this is an issue.
Also, she looks really good all wet, like the paint is in good shape lol
I think it’s been 30 years…
Back on the road after what I think is 30 years… gotta get new tires, but my 84 Grand Prix is a driver!
She runs!!
SHE FINALLY RUNS!!!! Got her started and drove around the parking lot a couple times today. That’s the good news.
The bad news is the master is empty and the brakes are pulling. I have new soft lines and a master if I need it tho, not a huge deal.
Also, the fuel line popped. Not terrible surprised by that either.
But I drove her finally today! Not sure if that engine noise was because of the emissions stuff we disconnected or not. Here’s hoping…
