My first NKD: the 150-mm Tojiro Classic Petty Knife

I've been lurking on this subreddit for quite some time, and after lots of deliberation, I finally ordered this 150-mm Tojiro Classic petty knife from Chef Knives To Go. After coming back to the U.S., I immediately gave it a try on some apples. This is my first proper kitchen knife, and my goodness, it cuts like nothing I have ever held with my hands. What an incredible pleasure.

(I also pulled the trigger on a much more exciting 210-mm gyuto forged by a blacksmith well-known in this community. I haven't used it yet, but I look forward to making another NKD post when I do.)

Order for a M5 MacBook Air 15" cancelled without notification or explanation

I placed an order for a M5 MacBook Air 15" on July 26th and the email initially suggested that the in-store pick-up would be ready by August 19th. However, when I clicked the link on my order number to check my order status today, I found out that the order has been cancelled. I did not receive a notification nor an explanation. So, I don't even know how long ago my order was cancelled.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is this related to the RAM shortage?

Edit: To clarify, I ordered online directly from Apple.

Who are the most overlooked and underrated knifemakers?

I know about Yoshikane, Tetsujin, Kagekiyo, Ashi, Takada, Nakagawa, etc.

Which knifemakers don't get enough hype on this subreddit?

Recommend a travel/dayhike backpack for me!

I'm looking for a small backpack to serve two purposes:

  1. For carrying water, snacks, raincoat, etc. on a day hike
  2. For carrying water, devices, umbrella, etc. when I explore a city during day while leaving most of my luggage back at a hostel when traveling

I already have a GORUCK GR2 34L for my daily use, so this second backpack doesn't need a laptop compartment, and it probably doesn't need to be larger than around 20L.

I'm currently considering a few options:

What do you think of these options? What other backpacks would you recommend?

Edit: I want to add that I am a guy and 6'4"/1.93m tall.

▲ 194 r/Dodgers

Former Dodger Rich Hill just appeared on Trevor May's YouTube channel to discuss the firing of Alex Cora and his coaches by the Red Sox, and he repeatedly brought up the excellence of Andrew Friedman and the Dodgers organization as a frame of reference.

This is a snippet of what he said during the video at 20:30. Watch the whole video to hear more.

"I will go back to the Dodgers, where [Brandon] Gomes and Andrew Friedman really promoted that type of freedom in the clubhouse, and I will go back to that example because Andrew Friedman was in the clubhouse every single day, if not, you know six days of the week. 'How are you doing? How's your family?' I can remember a vividly a conversation that I had, 'why are you getting away from throwing fastballs at the top of the zone and breaking balls, you know, below the zone? Let's get back to that. That's what we signed you for.' But it wasn't like, you know, hey, let's go and you know, not speak with him and have it come through another channel or reprimand or whatever other ways that could've been done. It was just direct, and it was a very enjoyable conversation. Yes, after a poor outing or maybe after a few like subpar outings, where you know, he comes to you. And this is just my example for me. I saw this done with hitters. I saw it done on the fielding side. I saw it done with bullpen guys. I saw it done with catchers. So, [for] all departments, he had his ability. His ability to be able to communicate — Andrew Friedman — to go and talk with that player was egoless. Bringing the veterans that he had — the right veterans — the machine just took care of itself."

▲ 12 r/Jazz

I'm going through a jazz phase in my life as a listener with no musical background or training. I was prompted to really explore the genre after Norwegian Wood, Cowboy Bebop, and the 2023 film American Fiction. I'm sure I'm not alone in this.

I set a goal of listening to 50 albums in 2026, and I am currently through 20, roughly following this incredibly instructive Reddit post.

Here are the 20 albums in chronological order of when I listened to them. My five favorites thus far are in bold. Before this year, I've also listened to some Thelonius Monk and Miles Davis. I really enjoyed Genius of Modern Music, Kind of Blue, and Sketches of Spain.

  1. Bix Beiderbecke, Vol. 1 - Singin’ the Blues
  2. The Essential Glenn Miller
  3. The Art Tatum Solo Masterpieces, Vol. 1
  4. The Art Tatum Solo Masterpieces, Vol. 2
  5. Ellington at Newport 1956 (Complete) [Live]
  6. The Homefront 1941 - 1945
  7. The Complete Atomic Basie
  8. Count Basie at Newport
