It’s national vanilla slice day today. Where is the best “traditional” vanilla slice in Sydney?

Based in the East but can go for a drive at lunch to grab one for afternoon tea.

Recommendations please. 🙏

New pick ups: Jervis Bay Distilling “Bay Aperitivo” and Red Mill Rum’s “Amaro Tropicale” (Australia)

Just a couple of new pick ups.

I’d had an earlier iteration of JBD’s “Bay Aperitivo”. It’s a solid Campari substitute. Perhaps a little sweeter but overall solid red bitter. Nice bottle as well. Their distillery in Huskisson NSW is small but worth a visit.

The next bottle looked so nice I bought it twice! I had high hopes for Red Mills “Amaro Tropicale” which is meant to have dried pineapple, orange peel, bitter herbs and botanicals on a rum base. I’ll have to give it a few more tastes but neat and in a spritz I didn’t get that many botanicals. It sits at 27% abv but tastes a little punchier and I think would work better in cocktails than as a digestif. That said the label is pimp and it will look good on the bar!

PSA for budding Australian flag designers. This is way wattle looks like.

For some reason Australian redesigns are the flavour of the moment. The symbol of Australia is the Golden Wattle. Now unlike the designey design flag that bears that name but looks like a random corporate star logo here are some designs incorporating wattle!

Take some inspiration and let’s see what you can do.

La Mariana tiki mugs

Visited La Mariana yesterday and these were the mugs they had in stock. I got the Hana Ho mug (one on the left, it’s a fertility goddess).

Always good to get a mug from a bar visit.

Riding the Mai Tai express in Waikiki

I get it, not all these are Mai Tais. But it was a fun side quest while I was here. To be honest the Splash bar at the Sheraton Kauilani gets big props from me for having a traditional garnish on the Tropical Itch (a wooden backscratcher) when even venerated bars like La Mariana don’t.

If I had to rate the worst was at Rumfire. WTF was that guava slushie doing in there? Mai Tai bar did good. Splash bar good. Moana was okay at lunch time after a swim but could do better.

Waikiki stockists for Paradise Found Aloha Shirts

Visiting Oahu in a few weeks time with the family. I am a bit of a planner and have pretty much worked out what Hawaiian / Aloha shirts I want to grab as souvenirs.

I’ll be staying at the Sheraton & Moana (not at the same time!).

First one is from Jams World which conveniently looks to be across the road my hotel at the International Market Place.

Second one I’d like is one of the Paradise Found magnum prints (either the red jungle bird or purple calla Lily). Now here’s my question. They don’t have a shop per se. I can see that “Shaka Time” has some in stock but they are a ~10-15 minute uber away in Honolulu.

Does anyone know of a Waikiki stockist of Paradise Found shirts?

Note: I will also go and check out Baileys as I’ve searched the sub and that place gets a lot of love. Although it is also a bit of a hike from Waikiki.
