Morton Bay Bug Pasta from Ursula’s 💔

Still upset Ursulas closed and think about the Moreton Bay Bug pasta A LOT. Posting on the off chance that someone who used to work there sees this and is willing to share the recipe (or even just the key flavours/ingredients) so I can try to recreate it at home and fill at least a tiny part of the void. 😢

40th dinner: Kindred vs Olio?

Hi SydFoodies,

Planning a weekend in Chippendale for a friend’s 40th and trying to lock in our food plans.

After searching the sub, Kindred, Olio and Lankan Filling Station seem to come up a lot. For those who’ve been recently, which would you choose for a group of 6? Any other places with a similar vibe that you’d pick over those?

Also coffee or brunch in the area?

Thanks

Cafe Paci, but make it Veg

So much rec for this place and I’ve always wanted to go but the online menu showed little vegetarian options, so it hadn’t been on the top of my list.

Thursday night, 6:30pm. No reservation made. We were offered a small table at the entrance until a bar seat would become available.

Apart from the few obviously veg dishes on the menu, we were told of the dishes a lot could be made veg which I was super excited about!

10/10 great experience, great food, great date night. Would definitely go again.

I’m quite a home cook so when eating out I really enjoy these complex dishes with a lot of layers and ingredients that I just don’t have time for at home.

Thanks for the rec foodies!

Peaceful and Quiet Drinking

(Inspired by a post looking for lively place to drink.)

I'm a 40 yr old man who just want to drink in a quiet, peaceful place with a nice ambiance. I used to go to Nikkei, a Peruvian-Japanese resto in Surry Hills, cos they had amazing cocktails. Unfortunately, they are permanently closed. I would greatly appreciate any suggestion of something similar or a bit quiter where I can relax and enjoy amazing drinks.

(Also if you know the name of the previous bartender of Nikkei who made those lovely cocktails and know where he is now, please let me know as well.)

Post-marathon dinner?

Hello! I’d love to treat my sister to a post-marathon dinner in August. Hoping for an Aussie-forward meal and an earlier reservation. Opera view was the vision, but don’t want to sacrifice good food for views

Current options are Aria, Altitude, 6head, or Oborozuki

Unfortunately the Bennelong pre-theatre menu is pretty limited, Cafe Sydney isn’t open Sunday evening, and SixPenny is closed during marathon weekend

Open to other options! We already have Ester, St Peter, and Cafe Paci booked

John Belvedere in Parramatta Church Street - Sirloin Steak and Chicken Fungi

They nailed the cook on the steak. But took over 30 minutes to serve us. The chicken was kinda okay-ish too.

Not sure this counts as fine dining ($90ish for two people) - but I didn't know what other flair to pick

Custom anime cakes?

Hi! Does anyone know of any cake shops or bakers that make custom anime cakes? 8” cake or thereabouts. Bonus if they make one piece cakes! I don’t want anything too expensive, perhaps no more than $100. Thanks!

The Ramen Chase #3 - Nichi Getsu Dō

Location Kent Street, Sydney CBD

Wait 10 mins for a table of 3

Atmosphere A small place with a lively atmosphere. The service was efficient and friendly for what looked like a busy lunch

Ordered Miso Tantan Ramen - $26

A hearty looking bowl was delivered with a fiery streak of chilli on the side that immediately caught my eye. The toppings included peppery mince, fresh raw onion, sprouts, choy sum, and a jammy ajitama egg.

I grabbed the spoon for a taste of the broth which had a mild miso base and that tantan nuttiness which gave it great depth - It was well seasoned, and the spice built gradually, leaving a heat that lingered at the back of my throat. I sliced through one half of the egg, grabbing some yolk, mince and a stack of noodles. The noodles were chewy and perfect, the mince was savoury, the yolk like butter and that heat just kept building. The onion, sprouts and choy sum added some bite and texture along with some much needed relief from that fiery streak.

Final thoughts Spicy and delicious - The chilli was slightly overpowering by the end of the bowl but I'd absolutely visit again as this left me feeling warm and very satisfied! 4.2⭐

Restaurants / Bars with QR codes on the table are the GOAT

If you come with a group of people everybody can just order at the table without leaving, payment becomes a lot easier and there’s no need to worry about splitting or transferring later. Hopefully this trend continues ❤️

Napoleon cake in Sydney?

Is it impossible to find a Napoleon cake in Sydney, if you just want individual slices to try? Or is it just my woeful google search skills?

I want the European-style Napoleon cake.

Thanks!

Free Super Spicy Lanzhou Beef Noodles Soup Challenge

If you enjoy spicy food, it's good. Many school kids are attempting this super spicy challenge.

A few tips

  1. Eat slowly, you dont want to cough while eating.

  2. You dont need to drink the soup.

  3. There is no time limit.

  4. Nobody is watching or supervising you. You can technically get a bowl/cup of water and rinse the spicy chili off before eating.

  5. You can drink water etc...there is free water available. Milk is good to cool off spicy food or coca cola. Anything will do. Bring two cans.

  6. At the counter, the cashier said if you cant complete the challenge, just pay $9.90 which is still a reasonable price. it's a standard bowl

  7. You get to choose the noodles. Try choosing the wide noodles... less chili will coat it. Thin noodles gets covered with more chili.

  8. Available every weekday (Monday to Friday) at four locations from 11am to 9pm until 15th July.

Challenge Accepted and Completed Successfully.

Restaurant is called 1915 Lanzhou Beef Noodles Soup (IMPORTANT the year 1915)

At Northside Produce Market. Svetlana is making the most delicious honey cake and honey biscuits and is lovely to boot. Highly recommend! I would have taken a photo but it didn’t last long enough…

Menu Choices

Got a booking at Bennelong and looking to do the three course menu. Not a stranger to fine dining, but only going for a laugh and I’ve read the reviews here that it’s hit and miss and it’s mainly for view / ambience. I’ve been to vue de monde and the food was mid at best but the vibe was great so can’t complain haha.
A few questions:

  1. What should we get so we don’t screw up?
  2. Where on earth is the entrance?

KBBQ that use Charcoal

As the title says, looking for KBBQ spots in Sydney that use charcoal (and with quality meat). Sadly, DAEJANGKUM in Eastwood has closed. Bornga in Haymarket uses charcoal, but the Rhodes location doesn't.

Drinks Martin place

Happy Friday foodies! I’m organising some work drinks in the Martin place area in a month or so for a couple hours after work. Any ideas on a good venue. I’ve got Verandah Bar and Cabana already. Thanks legends!
