Starter Deck Knockout

Build a team of 3 Free Starter Decks on Arena.

• Together they must cover all 5 colors so each is represented.
• When a deck loses, it's eliminated.
• Your run ends when all 3 decks are knocked out.

Forget the meta for a minute.

If your only goal was to have as much fun as possible playing MTG Arena Standard, what deck would you choose?

Mine is 4-Color Reanimator. The big creatures and ridiculous plays make every game memorable.

I still think it's a valuable starting point for brand-new drafters, even if you move beyond it as you improve. It teaches the importance of removal and evasion in a chaotic environment, such as your first few drafts.

Do you still recommend BREAD to beginners, or has something else replaced it for you?

I recommend the free UW Flyers deck to new players a lot, not just because it's strong, but it feels more synergistic than the others. All of the decks have their dud cards, but I feel like this one teaches new player to have a plan, not just throw our random creatures.

If you could recommend one starter deck to a brand-new player, which would it be and why?

For me, it's usually forcing an archetype for the next 5 drafts if I have early success with it. I'm sure Im not alone in that.

What's your biggest mistake when learning a new Draft format? And what do you plan to do different on this one?

Is Pick 2 Draft your favorite? Or do you prefer traditional draft despite being lower EV?

Things like queue time, difficulty, enjoyment, and collection growth all matter too.

If your goal is maximizing a F2P account, where are you spending your gold right now?

More gems means more Drafts. More Drafts means more packs, more wildcards, and more competitive decks. The snowball effect is real.

Do you think one great Draft can have a bigger impact than opening 10 packs? Why or why not?

I keep seeing players recommend the same few decks, but after playing Learn from the Land, I was surprised by how powerful its late game can be once it starts ramping.

I opened $50 worth of packs and tracked the rares, mythics, wildcards, and overall collection progress to see what the actual return looks like.

I tested Ambitious Augmenter as anti-sweeper tech, and honestly… this one card might be enough to make Mono Green Stompy a real contender again.

Curious how everyone approaches drafting. Do you prioritize safer value in Quick Draft, or aim for the bigger upside in Premier?

I’ve been playing a 0 rare Mono White Lifegain list on MTG Arena, and it’s been surprisingly effective at staying out of reach against all the aggressive decks on ladder.

Curious what other budget players are using. Is lifegain still the best anti-aggro option, or is there something better?

I took Dimir Mill onto the MTG Arena ladder to see if you can really win without dealing combat damage—and honestly, it performed better than I expected.

What deck feels strongest right now, and is there anything you think the meta is overrated?

I’ve been posting an Upgrade Path series where I start with a free MTG Arena starter deck and slowly add wildcards until it becomes a competitive Standard deck. This time I took RG Path of Power and upgraded it all the way into Simic Craterhoof.

Curious how other F2P players approach this. Do you invest in upgrading starter decks, or save your wildcards for top meta lists?

I’ve been testing it in Jeskai Control, and it honestly feels like one of the biggest upgrades the deck has gotten in a while. The card just does a lot of work and seems to fit perfectly into the current Standard meta.
