Hot Take; Franky's Post-Timeskip design is way better than his Pre-Timeskip one

BUT, as with the writing of pretty much every other main character that isn't Luffy, Oda fails spectacularly to properly characterize and write him.

Franky's Post-Timeskip design really emphasizes his weirdness, his zaniness, his creativity, and, most importantly, his desire to upgrade his old "weak" fleshsuit even more in order to help his friends even more. In many ways, Franky and Chopper are practically identical in the way they're presented coming right out from the Timeskip.

However, while Franky's blocky forearms, round shoulders, and reinforced metallic legs now make him look more like a (positively) bizarre action figure and freak of nature, Oda just doesn't write him that way. While Pre-Timeskip Franky was allowed to throw his sideburns at his opponent like knives, shoot nails from his mouth (which perfectly fit his role as a carpenter), turn into a centaur with his legs splitting apart, or even something like dislocating his shoulders to reveal cannons and pulling his skin off his right fist for a stronger punch, Post-Timeskip Franky's most creative and freaky utilizations of his upgraded body are turning his legs into tank treads and the Nipple Lights. Other than that, the only thing Oda seems capable of coming up for Franky and the Iron Pirate are random boxing and wrestling moves; I.e. attacks that could have just as well been used by Chopper or Luffy.

Oda really dropped the ball with Franky for no reason.

  • Let my man shoot snot from his nose that can be used like an adhesive that he can use both as a carpenter to glue wooden beams or something together on the Thousand Sunny or to prevent opponents from running away.
  • Let him turn one of his fingers into a blowtorch that can be used to weld things together during his job as a carpenter or to light his fist on fire for some additional burn damage while in combat.
  • Let him produce circular saws from his blocky forearms that he can use for cutting wood, pull out and use like an axe to cut trees, or throw like a frisbee at opponents.
  • Let him snap his head back like if he's a pez spender in order to evade attacks to the gnoggin or to actually pull some emergency milk out of his neck to give his friends who lost a tooth or something.

There are so many creative and crazy ways for Oda to utilize Franky's now even weirder and freakier body. All of what I just listed probably only scratches the surface of what an actually skilled author and Pre-Timeskip Franky would have been capable of.

So, why is Oda so afraid of letting Franky (and Chopper) be the freak of nature he's supposed to be? Why are random wrestling moves and basic punches/slaps the best thing we get from them in combat?

Concept Album Idea - "Absurd Tales of War"

For all the terrible things war does to humanity, ever so rarely, there are some rather absurd and out-of-the-ordinary moments within that truly make you question everything about humankind and the lengths we go to in order to kill each other.

Infernal Beasts - the Emu War in Australia in 1932.

Defenestration - the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War due to the act of throwing some political officials out of a window in Prague, and the subsequent Battle of White Mountain.

Lick my Arse - Götz von Berlichingen (also known as Götz of the Iron Hand), a German knight, mercenary, and poet, who lost his hand due to friendly fire, but continued fighting (and writing poems), ultimately coining the phrase, "Er kann mich am Arsch lecken/He can lick me on the arse".

Out of Time and Space - the legend of a soldier of the Spanish Empire in 1593 who was, allegedly, mysteriously transported from Manila in the Phillippines to the Plaza Mayor in Mexico City.

Le Glouton - Tarrare, a French showman, soldier, and spy, famous for his ferocious appetite. At one point, the Army tried to make use of his unique skills by making him swallow important information and plans, and having them recovered from his stool at their destination. Naturally, this failed and he was later put in a hospital where they tried to cure him.

Instruments of War - James Reid, bagpipes, and the Battle of Culloden. Following the failed Jacobite Risings of Charles Edward Stuart and their defeat at the Battle of Culloden, one of the many imprisoned claimed that he was not a soldier, but only a piper when accused of treason. However, the court simply declared that bagpipes were, in fact, instruments of war and thus James Reid was a soldier.

Fear the Bear - in October of 1963 during the hight of the Cuban Missile Crisis, a normal bear almost caused Americans to engage in nuclear warfare with the Soviets when they mistook the animal for Soviet saboteurs.

Bucket - the Battle of Zappolino, the only battle during the War of the Oaken Bucket in November 1325 between the two Italian towns Bologna and Modena.

Mademoiselle Maupin - Julie d'Aubigny a french opera singer and bisexual icon who served at the court of Versailles and succesfully bested several men in duels after kissing a woman they were interested in.

Friend found along the Way - in 1866, a detachment of soldiers from Liechtenstein was send to help the Austrians. And while they didn't see any actual combat during the Austro-Prussian War while guarding the Brenner Pass, they did find one new man who joined them, most likely an Italian defector or farmer.

Whiskey War - the peaceful war between Canada and Denmark over Hans Island which went on for almost fifty years. Soldiers from the two nations would plant their flag in the ground while leaving their enemies some alcohol in exchange.

If you could have Alex Henderson animate a music video for one Sabaton song, which one would be?

Could be either a music video for an already existing song or a song you'd think Sabaton should do in the future.

The ignorance of certain fans is truly astonishing and, quite frankly, concerning (Political)

"How can people read One Piece but still lean politically towards the right/be conservative when it clearly has soooo many left/liberal elements?"

Really? You can't imagine how a series that (at times) portrays an entire culture of queer people as predatory and grotesque caricatures might speak to people with a less than friendly outlook on queer culture/LGBTQ+? You can't imagine how a series where two of the most prominent main characters are known for their misogynistic and sexist view on women, where princesses are still required to be saved on the regular by big and muscular male characters because Oda primarily lets female characters only be mentally strong but not physically, and where most mothers in back stories are the same paragons of goodness that end up getting fridged for the development of (mainly) male characters might cater to people with a more conservative and outdated view on women in general? You can't imagine how a series where, even when an evil usurper and tyrant ends up getting overthrown, the island will ALWAYS revert back to the previous kind of monarchy because it clearly had no flaws before and/or the previous king was sooo perfect might speak to people who might actually see no problems with the current system of how the world is run or any other underlying issues? You can't imagine how a series where the creator still speaks highly of the creator of Rurouni Kenshin, even with all of the stuff he did, might speak to people who have no problem with other people of power being involved with children in similar ways?

"Why do people claim that Sabaton are Nazis? They said they are apolitical and have several songs about how bad Nazis are."

Seriously? You can't imagine how a history/war band that sings about the "great" achievements of certain countries in the past during war times might speak to certain people in those countries who use these songs as rallying cries for their national believes? You can't imagine how a band that tries to stay apolitical inevitably ends up making songs for one political ideology one way or another (especially since the political right/nationalists have a habit of appropriating songs and other cultures for their own agenda)?

You can't imagine or do you just don't WANT to imagine because it might force you to admit that there are some issues in the way your favorite series/creator/whatever handles certain topics?

Now, I'm not saying that any of that is done by the creator/series deliberately. Oda himself might not be a misogynist and Sabaton probably aren't right-wing in real life. It's just that there are certain groups of people out there who only hear and read what they want to hear and read, while ignoring any and all other things in the same work that might contradict their beliefs. But outright saying that those people are stupid and ignoring what led to these people cherry picking like this from One Piece, Sabaton songs, or whatever else might just be even more stupid.

If there are elements that can get cherry picked like this and be used by people from a certain political spectrum as rallying cries, then those elements need to be addressed and talked about.

If you ever feel stupid or down, I want you to remember one thing...

There really is no shortage of people out there who want you to believe that apparently fights don't matter because "oNe PiEcE iSn'T a BaTtLe ShOnEn" and other strawman arguments of that nature.

Having characters get out of their comfort zone and willing to fight tooth and nails for their friends and dreams literaly are one of the easiest and best ways to flesh out and develop characters and their dynamics with each other. Yet some people nowadays really want you to believe that they don't matter, that their absence isn't that bad, that it's just dumb powerscaling nonsense, and (worst of all) that it's okay for the Strawhats to not get developed any further because "tHe StOrY iSn'T aBoUt ThEm AnYmOrE" or because Arc XYZ apparently isn't about them and that we should trust Oda to do something with any given character in maybe the next Arc, or the one afterwards, or the one after that...

People really are that desperate to defend and excuse mediocrity. Just something to think about whenever you need something to lighten up your day.

Cindry might be one of the most underrated tragic characters in all of One Piece

...and Oda didn't even need to write an entire volume worth of backstory to hammer it home.

KAMEHAMEHA

Don't mind me, just hoping we get a song about this absolute legend of a conqueror/king one day, solely for the reason to hear Joakim shout "KAMEHAMEHA" at least once.

Wouldn't it have made more sense for Robin to learn Fish-Man Jujutsu rather than Fish-Man Karate?

Considering how grappling and throwing her opponents is way more of her thing than punching them, I mean.

Concerns about the Strawhats

Lately it feels to me as if the Strawhats don't feel like actual characters, much less like a found family anymore. As if their own dreams, ambitions, and different talents don't matter anymore.

Sea levels across the globe are rising within the world of One Piece, affecting the life of all kinds of animals and people above and below the ocean. But do we get a reaction from Nami that all the maps she has drawn up to that point, her entire lifework basically, has all gone down the drain? Do we get something from Jinbe about how those conditions might affect coexistence between human and merfolk? Do we get a reaction from Sanji or Brook about how the rising water levels affect sea live (like Laboon) and how this could correlate to the All Blue (if at all)?

Rather than having Chopper push his medical knowledge to the limit in an attempt to save Zoro from certain death during the Raid on Onigashima, Oda pulls the Mink's Magical Deus Ex Machina Miracle Medicine out of thin air and has it do all the work for Chopper. What could otherwise have been a much needed and welcomed character interaction between Zoro and Chopper turned into something that ultimately didn't tell us anything about the involved characters.

Chopper's reaction towards Sanji freaking out when he fears that he might turn into an emotionless inhumane monster like his siblings was one of pure comedy, when Chopper out of all people should know what it feels like to turn into a mindless beast. Like, is it weird to expect something more from Chopper in this situation, not only because he's the crew's doctor and ensuring his friends' well-being (both physical and mental) is one of his primary directives in that role, but also because of his past character arc of overcoming this inner monster?

Then, when Chopper ultimately couldn't cure all the innocent people of Wano who ate faulty SMILE fruits, we never got anything more from that. It's like he completely forgot about their suffering by the time the crew reached Egghead, and that's despite the fact that Chopper's dream is to make a cure-all and Vegapunk, one of the primary experts on Devil Fruits in the entire world is there on Egghead at that moment!

Sanji spent two years learning the Attack Cuisine in the Kamabakka Kingdom during the Timeskip. 99 different recipes that have special properties to enhance and strengthen the consumer's vitality of which we have only seen two of. And yet, when Oda needed a new and upgraded cola to fuel Franky to make him an arbitary amount stronger in order to keep up with the powercreep on Elbaf, rather than making use of this skill that Sanji learned and highlighting the bond between the Strawhats, >!he made Lilith pull out "Omni-Drain Converters", tools that we've never seen or heard about before that can magically boost Franky with their never-seen-before power by creating a brand-new kind of Cola out of thin air.!<

Nowadays, whenever Oda wants to reveal information about the history and/or the world of One Piece to the reader, rather than having Robin find out about it organically by catering to her expertise and talents as an archaeologist, he has a conveniently all-knowing old dude or other plot device just dumping all that information on the reader. Where previously, in Arcs like Skypiea and Fish-Man Island, Robin was allowed to wander and piece clues about the ancient path together herself, thus creating a more authentic and organic reading experience, in the most recent Arcs, all that information is just laid out to the reader rather unceremoniously by another character who just so happens to have all that information already. It happened on Zou with Inuarashi and Nekomamushi, Wano with Sukiyaki, Egghead with Vegapunk, and Elbaf with Saul/the library. How does any of this feel like a more rewarding reading experience than if Robin had pieced the mystery behind the sunken Wano or if she had learned about the ancient mural on Elbaf and its meaning due to her talents as an indvidual character with talents and dreams of her own, rather than just having it all be told to her by another character?

It all feels as if the Strawhats have lost what made them so compelling characters (to me) in the past. Their interactions with one another are pretty much a thing of the past and their abilities and dreams aren't allowed to shine organically even in situations where they really should. But that might just be me.

Hot Take: I think Robin VS Yama still is Robin's single best fight and portrayal as a fighter (and even kinda as an archaeologist) to this day

Her role as the "underdog" in the fight felt believable instead of forced, due to the fight starting with them surrounded by the ruins of the Shandians. This also highlighted her role as the crew's archaeologist and highlights her ruthlessnes in combat perfectly.

Combined World Maps of Fódlan and Dagda

Really love the world design so far, but I'm not sure why Dagda would go through the trouble of sailing all around its Northern coast/Fódlan's Southern coast and through Brigid in order to launch an invasion of the Mach region which is in North Western Fódlan. Is Fódlan's Southern border guarded that highly?

Concept Album Idea - "Femme Fatale"

This album would be all about the the roles women played in our history and wars. Some will be your standard Sabaton songs about brave warriors and wars, while with others I took the liberty to explore other equally noteworthy, yet unfortunately gravely underrepresentated aspects and contributions of women in our history.

Skjaldmær - a song about Norse shield-maidens during the viking age. The song would be sung in Swedish.

Pirate Empress - a song about Zheng Yi Sao, an infamous pirate who leader of the pirate confedaration following her husband's death, earning her an army from between 40,000 to 70,000 pirates and 400 junks. Following a series of defeats against the Portugese, she was allowed to keep 1,400 men, avoid prosecution, and live a peaceful and quiet life until her death at age 68.

LaVena - a song about the mysterious death of the US soldier LaVena Johnson, who "took her own life" after loosing some teeth, getting a black eye, and burning her genitals with a corrosive chemical. The US Army covered and still covers up much about the circumstances surrounding her death.

Mother - a counter song to "Father". It focuses on Marie Curie and her research on radioactivity and what her discoveries meant for humankind, both the good and the terrible.

Femme Fatale - a song about Mata Hari, a famous exotic dancer who spied for the Germans in WWI and who ended up getting executed by the French.

Hexenhammer - a song about witch hunts all across Europe, but in particular the German inquisitor Heinrich Kramer's misogyny and obsession with women, Helena Scheuberin in particular, which led him to write the infamous Malleus Maleficarum (the Hammer of Witches).

Hai Bà Trưng - a song about the Trưng sisters, Trắc and Nhị, their rebellion against the invading Chinese, their subsequent deaths, and ascension to the status of Viatnamese national heroines. One of them, Trắc, even became the first female monarch of Vietnam.

Lady with the Lamp - a song about Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing and a prominent figure during the Crimean War whose influence drastically lowered death rates and who played a vital role at reforming the reputation of nursing for women and everyone.

Saint of Christopher Street - a song about Marsha P. Johnson, a feminist, human rights activist, and influential figure during the Stonewall Riots of 1969.

Immaculate Am I - a song about Cleopatra, the famous Egyptian Queen known more for her alleged beauty and affairs, rather than her fluety in up to nine different languages, intelligence, and leadership. The song would touch in depth on her suicide to avoid capture by the Romans after the defeat of Antony's fleet.

Back Home - a song about the women who stay home while their men, brothers, and sons head into war. It'd touch subjects like women's work in factories to produce amunition and clothes for soldiers, women who have to work the fields while their men are gone, and women whose partners might never return after being sent off to die for nothing.

Strawhats VS Oars might be one of the best and creative fights in all of One Piece

The choreography was on point. Each Strawhat's individual talents and traits got to shine in some way, either by playing support or offense. Usopp was allowed to be a sniper, Chopper a doctor, and Franky a mechanical expert. Nami made use of her understanding of the weather in more ways than simply using Thunderbolt over and over again and the team work seen in this fight remains unrivaled to this day.

I wish Oda had the balls to give us a consistently working crew like the one on Thriller Bark again some day.

Does it make sense for Dragon and Whitebeard to be one character?

So, little heads-up first; I'm currently working on the ground work for an Alternate Universe story that follows (more or less) the exact layout and premise of the actual One Piece story as written by Oda, just way more focused and less cluttered with random elements and characters.

For example, there aren't any Seven Warlords of the Sea. Instead, Crocodile would be a rogue member of the Revolutionary Army who grew disenfranchised with Dragon's more idealistic way of rebellion. It builds up on the fact that Dragon had a surprisingly strong presence early on from his introduction during Logue Town and further information about him during the Levely backstory during the Drum Island Arc. And yet we don't get any more development about him or the Revolutionary Army during Alabasta, despite the Arc featuring a full-on rebellion of the people against their king/a nation that was a founding member of the World Government.

With that out of the way, I've been wondering; could Dragon be featured even more prominently in this AU? Would it make (some amount of) sense for him to take Whitebeard's place as an Emperor of the Sea, with Ace being one of his commanders, and him then going to Marineford where he has his last stand and dies?

My ideas for this and how they connect with events of the canon story are then as follows;

* Dragon has Whitebeard's Devil Fruit, which not only allows him to create earthquakes, but also, due to the vibrations, create powerful gusts of wind, which ties together with what little we know about Dragon's canon powers so far * he dies protecting his son or sons, thus highlighting his love for his son and his talk with Kuma about how children are a father's biggest weakness * Dragon might head into this war knowing that, unlike other Emperors, his revolutionary movement is much bigger than just him as its figure head, especially with Luffy still alive and Ivankov (and Crocodile) out of prison again * **POTENTIALLY**, after his death, either Ivankov becomes and remains the leader of the Revolutionary Army or a character who is a combination between Sabo and Marco takes over leadership OR Crocodile and maybe even Kuzan after he left the Marines following his defeat against Sakazuki

That's the general gist of it so far. Would it make any amount of sense or would it feel way too much out of left field and completely unlike One Piece, please let me know. I'm open for any kind of criticism.
