For me personally, it’s the utter lack of nuance. “Bad guy bad, good guy good”. Yeah sure motherfucker. A cheesy backstory does not explain why said bad guy is bad nor does it give them any humanizing elements. Like the marines and world government for example. They should be portrayed as people who genuinely think they’re doing good for the world, at least most of them, because that’s the whole point of the government sector and the propaganda. But nooooo we just have to get “WG evil revolution good”. One couldn’t even point out an evil revolutionary to show nuance because there simply isn’t one. Every group has good and bad, so how come everyone in one group is portrayed as fucking angels while there’s BARELY any true depictions of government/civil service or military personnel psychology. Another one for me is the nepotism. Why does nobody except Water 7 have democracy I will never know. Why Luffy Mcfreedom lover doesn’t establish democracy, hell why the revolutionaries don’t do it and just put a good king on the throne without a second thought for how the lineage might birth Wapol 2 is beyond my understanding.
