I was called a ugly fuck on the street
I was walking back after a night out when two boys approached us and started making conversation. They seemed younger than us, and I didn’t feel particularly involved, which is something I struggle with in most social situations. I always seem to feel overlooked or ignored. Eventually, the conversation fizzled out, and as my friend waited for them to say something, I couldn’t handle the awkwardness or the feeling of being surrounded by a group of around 15 boys I didn’t know. I grabbed my friend’s hand and said goodbye, only for one of them to shout, “Bye, ugly fucks” as we walked away.
My heart dropped. I’ve never felt so humiliated, and I think it hurt so much because it touched insecurities I’ve carried for years. I’m in my second year of university, and I sometimes wonder whether I’ve simply outgrown the nightlife in my area. The scene is small, very local, and I often feel like I don’t fit in. Having olive skin and a larger nose has always made me feel different, but I never expected someone to openly call me ugly in the street, especially when people in my year were around to hear it. I already struggle with feeling overlooked and less attractive than other girls, and that one comment has left me questioning myself in ways I wish I didn’t.
