WOTD: The ultimate financial plot twist!

In frame: Sanda Tank Watch paired with aftermarket 20mm Titan Strap (Reference Wrist Size~ 7").

My most affordable purchase till date. I know how it's a straight up knockoff of The Cartier Tank with Japanese movement inside but somehow I got it for ₹300 (including shipping from China) a year ago and for that price, I have no issues wearing it as a beater watch. Ironically the strap it's paired with cost more than the watch😅.

P.S. Clicks are taken from Realme GT Neo 2.

Let's discuss Terra: My Overview & Thoughts with some 'Meh' Clicks...

Since its first drop, Terra has been a Hot Talk topic with some people liking the looks, some disliking it, some calling it overhyped and some which are elite businessmen & saw it as an easy money opportunity. And now here I am, trying to steer in between all of those and writing this post sharing my thoughts. So let's start with:

☀️ MY INITIAL IMPRESSIONS:

At this point, most of us know its specs and dimensions so keeping it aside, I will be sharing the pros and cons of it based on my experience and feel of the watch.

Pros:

1.) Case Design: The design surely is distinctive. The square case without lugs is something that make you keep looking at it. Being perfectly flat from all sides, it may be uncomfortable to some of us but on my ~7" wrist, it's quite comfortable.

2.) Case Material: Due to Titanium, it's quite lightweight. After wearing it for the entire day, it almost felt like there was nothing on the wrist.

3.) Crystal: The main highlight of the overall watch for me was the crystal. Although it's not Sapphire, the Bubble shaped domed crystal here looks really nice and since the overall watch is flat, it looks even better playing with light and imitating bubble like effect. I just loved it. (Reference Pic- 8th)

4.) Legibity: Legibility of the dial is also very good. Easily readable in both indoor and outdoor lighting conditions. (Reference Pic- 5th & 6th)

Cons:

1.) Lume: Although I am not a sucker for lume, still, here it's quite average. The brightness is good but it doesn't last long. So people who like Lume may get disappointed. (Reference Pic- 7th)

2.) Strap: The stock strap was not very good in the first feel and I found its length to be a little small for my ~7" wrist. Hence I replaced mine with an aftermarket strap.

3.) Accuracy: The second hand of the watch simply doesn't concide with the chapter ring markings and it's easily noticeable.

☀️ ON WRIST FEEL OF THE WATCH:

The watch feels really nice and comfortable on the wrist; almost non-existent after sometime due to it being extremely lightweight. The dial although may feel and look small simply because there's a significant portion of the watch face that's empty (which is bound to happen because of the round dial on the square case). The mineral crystal enhances the overall look providing various effects as it plays with light without hindering the Legibity (though it feels a little unprotected as its height is more than the case exposing it more and making it prone to crack on fall).

But the stock strap doesn't feel very nice on the first try (maybe get comfortable in the long run) and that's my only complaint with the watch.

☀️ WHAT'S DIFFERENT THAN THE FIRST BATCH?

Although the second drop is almost identical to the first batch, one key change I noticed is in the crown. Earlier the octagonal crown was all smooth but now a groove is added around its perimeter making it easier to pull the crown out. A good welcoming improvement.

Also I don't know if it was present earlier or not but the crown is signed too;i.e, has the DWC logo etched on it. (Reference Pic- 9th)

☀️ WHY I BOUGHT IT & WHY THE TITANIUM VERSION?

I had my two key reasons to buy Terra:

1.) As stated earlier, I really liked the distinctive Tool/Industrial design language of it and instantly got hooked to it's overall military styled dial theme.

2.) I got the Titanium version only because it's more affordable than its upcoming SS variants and as a proud Indian, saving a little extra gave me a little more satisfaction.

☀️ IS TERRA OVERHYPED?

What I truly feel is that the watch was a little overhyped. See, is the watch Value for money? For me yes. Was the watch Overhyped by DWC? I think it wasn't.

In my opinion, the watch got a lot of overexposure and it being so called Limited Edition, people who were unsure about their liking towards it also bought it out of FOMO due to watch being the centre of discussion on almost all Indian forums. Last nail to its overhype was hit by the resellers who made it look like some kind of premium and one time offer which it was clearly not.

To me, Is the watch perfect? No. Specs wise it can be lot improved and can be critically analysed. Is the Design Mass Appealing? Again No; but I personally liked it and that feeling made me purchase it.

Hence I think the watch wasn't overhyped from the very start but the overdiscussions and resellers made it one.

☀️ SHOULD ONE BUY TERRA?

The answer honestly is quite simple.

Keeping all the hype/overhype aside, If one like the Design then go for the upcoming SS models as they will be more refined and improved.

If you like Titanium Build then you can consider Berny watches for quartz or choose from Boddery Titanium automatics though the budget will increase nearly by ₹10,000.

If one needs a Titanium Build and Indian touch then one great option is Ajwain Shastra Mechanical.

☀️ DISCUSSION AND ECCENTRIC COMPARISON:

Till now, I came across various posts where some are happy to get one, some liked the design while some hated it and straight up called it ugly and overhyped. But thinking for an instance leaving aside its beauty, non-beauty and hype, the watch surely shines apart from other watches and people do notice this block of Titanium on the wrist.

Unfair comparison but in my opinion on a broader perspective, similar reason why Boddery got popular with its Voyager was it being value for money automatic, Titanium build and differentiating design thanks to those fancy elongated lugs (I know a brand called Bertucci had the same design before but it was Boddery which made it popular). In the same sense, Terra seems quite value for money too in the ₹4,000 range in spite of it being quartz and among other competitors such as Berny Titanium Catalogue.

How I see Terra is that this watch from DWC surely attracted traction from many people (even some international watch influencers covered it) and it unlocked a new level for the Indian watchmaking community as I have seen several independent enthusiasts recreating the design and even adding their own unique and quirky taste (credits to 3D printing technology).

To conclude, what I think is that Terra from DWC, Warli from Kala Watch Co. and Titan Stellar automatic series are some examples of such watches which hold potential to showcase our capabilities and create our own identity as Indian watch scene showcasing our own Design, culture based theme dial and in-house developed movements respectively and though we may be behind other international brands but the change and progress is welcoming.
