West Texas Homesteading?

I have spent the better part of 6 months looking for acreage I could use for a small homestead. Mostly owner financed options. After diving down several rabbit holes in this search, they all somehow all end up leading me back to west Texas.

- Larger parcels (20+ Acres)
- Almost no restrictions other than waste water
- Easy financing through seller
- Low cost
- Remote but within reasonable distance of a town

Well what’s the catch?

It’s in West Texas.. Arid, desert land in the trans-pecos region. Wells can be prohibitively expensive. Meaning most likely having to haul, store, and treat water on site. Temperatures can reach 100+ degrees. Gardening would require much more involvement and a climate controlled space. And power would almost certainly need to be solar.

After some research, I actually find the region to be quite beautiful. It doesn’t hurt that it directly abuts a Dark Sky Sanctuary. Assuming I would be willing to look past the shortcomings. What are the realities of homesteading in this region? What are the hidden costs? Cheap land is usually cheap for a reason. I was hoping to hear from some people actively homesteading in this, or similar high desert regions. I find the idea quite romantic but I’m sure I’m missing something.

TIA

Random People delivering orders

I have been doordashing food to my house somewhat regularly these last couple weeks. I experienced some car issues, and unfortunately don’t know many people in the area. Nor do I really enjoy asking for help anyways.

I’ve noticed that more often than not the person delivering my food is not the person shown on the app. Now you might ask how would I know? Generally there isn’t a detailed driver profile like Uber. But if the “dasher” is named something like Samantha and a burly gentleman is the person that exits the car to drop the food off. I can make a reasonable assumption that the person is in fact not Samantha.

What’s the big deal?
I believe drivers are vetted for a reason. It is kind of uncomfortable to have an unknown person showing up to my house without any idea who they are or what their background is. I get it people need to make a living but at the same time I feel it’s reasonable to have the person who has been vetted and named in the app to be the person showing up.

Am I in the wrong for reporting this activity?
