built a push-based SMS → expense pipeline with MacroDroid, Supabase real-time, and a Svelte PWA

Most “expense tracker” flows are pull-based: polling bank APIs, syncing once a day, or asking the user to type things in.

I wanted to see if I could do a pure event-driven pipeline from something as dumb as SMS.

The result:

  • Bank/UPI SMS arrives on Android.
  • MacroDroid automation fires, parses the SMS, and sends JSON to a Supabase endpoint.
  • Supabase writes to Postgres and broadcasts via its real-time WebSocket channel.
  • A Svelte PWA subscribes and re-renders in real time.

No cron jobs, no polling loops — just events all the way down.

Why I think it’s interesting:

  • SMS is still the most universal “API” for banks in many countries.
  • You get an append-only log of financial events that’s trivially auditable.
  • The stack is all managed services + one low-code automation app.

From random idea to live in 3 days: Xpense, a real-time SMS → expense tracker with MacroDroid, Supabase, and Svelte

So I tried an experiment: can I ship a useful, privacy-respecting expense tracker for Indian users in 3 days using only off-the-shelf tools?

What I ended up building:

  • MacroDroid on Android catches bank/UPI SMS the moment they arrive.
  • A webhook pushes parsed data (merchant, time, amount, type) to Supabase.
  • Supabase real-time sends the new row to a Svelte PWA via WebSockets.
  • The PWA (hosted on Vercel) instantly updates the UI — no polling, no cron.

Tech stack:

  • Android: MacroDroid automations + on-device regex parsing.
  • Backend: Supabase (Postgres + row-level security + real-time).
  • Frontend: Svelte PWA with offline-first bits and basic charts.

It’s open source and free to use/self-host.

Built a free tool that auto-logs every bank SMS in real time so you can see where your money actually goes

Most of my “budgeting” was vibes. I’d look at my bank balance at the end of the month, feel bad, and still have no idea where the money went.

The one thing that is always accurate is bank/UPI SMS.
So I built Xpense, a small tool that turns those SMS messages into a live ledger without any manual effort.

Under the hood:

  • MacroDroid on Android listens for incoming bank/UPI SMS.
  • On-device parsing extracts merchant, timestamp, and amount.
  • A Supabase backend logs every transaction in real time.
  • A small Svelte PWA shows a running feed of expenses the moment the SMS arrives.

It’s:

  • 100% free and open source.
  • Works fully off SMS (no bank logins, no scraping).
  • Designed around Indian SMS formats (UPI, card spends, ATM, etc.).

If you track your spending, how do you do it today?
