Can we have a serious talk about the feeder tanks…please
I’m not one for long speeches but something seriously needs to change about the way Petsmart keeps feeder fish. Thousands of these beautiful goldfish are kept in horrible conditions. Clamped fins, burned gills, swim bladder issues, diseases, and death by the thousands. As Petsmart employees, we do treat the tanks but it’s never enough to stop these issues in time. For a company that has strict standards about their animals, feeder fish always seem to get the short end of the stick. The overcrowding has to stop and there should be a higher standard to how many fish can be purchased and displayed in a feeder tank.
I know these are meant to be fed to another animal and the same could be argued about crickets but these fish are swimming in their own waste with atrocious water conditions. What type of example is this company setting for their consumers by presenting these goldfish like this and telling them that this is okay to buy them and put them through more hell.
I’m not saying everyone do this as there are are people who put them in ponds but the other half either gets them from carnivals (a horrible practice btw) or LPS and plop them in a bowl or 2 gallon and thinks “this is fine”.
If only Petsmart would be SMART and do better by these fish things would be so much better for them regardless if they are going into the mouth of another animal or in someone’s 50+ gallon.
