Need some advice on exposure with the Nikon F3

I recently picked one up and shot a few rolls of different Kodak films. I haven't shot film in a while, and everywhere I look people are recommending overexposing. So I set the exposure compensation to +1, then pulled it back to +1/3, but I'm still getting what feels like way too much overexposure. Is it supposed to look like that so you can pull back the highlights in post? Here is the example of original scan and then with exposure and whites corrected in Lightroom.

Now I'm wondering whether I should be using exposure compensation or exposing for shadows at all... or if something might be off with the light meter in the camera.
