UPDATE: We messaged and agreed on one nights compensation and his associate is going to switch out the pans. BUT he didn’t want to send us the full amount per night because that doesn’t include a ‘cleaning fee’ AT ALL€30 EXTRA PER NIGHT I DO NOT THINK SO. I battled and we got our extra money so that’s something. I will be very fair in the review in saying that he did arrange to fix the pans and we agreed on compensation but it still sits at a 3 star.

We have never had anything like this happen to us and we have been using Airbnb for YEARS and just want some advice.
So upon check-in, we were told to message a third-party who wasn’t on the listing, supposedly he was going to check us in. At 9 am on the day we are supposed to check in, this third-party contacts us to ask what time we are arriving. We initially say 5 pm but at 4:30pm our train was delayed so we messaged him immediately that it was delayed, with an ETA of 5:20pm. We then proceeded to hear nothing from him. We got to the Airbnb, which is a flat in Nice, and waited. The messages hadn’t been received on his side, it was showing a one tick on WhatsApp despite when calling, it going through but he just didn’t pick up. We then waited for nearly an hour outside with three really heavy backpacks. We contacted the original Airbnb host who said that he was going to be on his way (the third-party), after then hearing nothing else and repeatedly messaging the third-party he just sends us a code. We don’t know where a padlock is, we weren’t told there would be a padlock, we were told we would be physically checked in by a person, which we have been waiting for for nearly an hour. At this point, we are really pissed off. We’ve had a really long day and we are being fucked around by some people who really cannot get their shit together. We then are sent two long videos telling us how to check in except we cannot load them because the connection isn’t working. We finally find out, that the paddock is round the back of the building, which we found ourselves. My thing here is that they did not communicate whatsoever, we were told we were going to be physically checked in by a person, we were not, no one came to greet us, no one told us where the padlock was, we waited for nearly an hour.
Next, when we were finally checked in, we were messaged by the host to tell us to be quiet after 10:30 pm because the woman downstairs can get quite cranky. This is a reasonable request as we are very quiet, we have reviews on our accounts which show from previous hosts that we are quiet, respectful and from a previous host “I hardly realised they were there”. At around 10:40 pm we got a knock on the door. All we have done since we got back was sit on the bed and play Stardew Valley. We have not left the bed except to go brush our teeth. Immediately after we leave the bed she is knocking on the door. This is ridiculous, I did not pay €125 a night to be bullied by someone who is not even my neighbour. I did not pay €125 a night to be stressed out on my holiday. We also were not informed about her beforehand and this is making me really uncomfortable in my flat.
Next, because we are cheapskates and use Airbnb we like to cook. I will attach photos here but the pans are filthy. One of the pans has residue peeling off, I am not cooking with that. One of the pots was also dirty which we had to wash physically and had burn marks on the bottom. The other pot was just grubby. We then find out we can’t even cut our meat properly because there isn’t a cooking knife. There is essentially a butter knife with ridges, that’s the sharpest knife we have.
This doesn’t even cover the fact that the bed is uncomfortable, it is a sofa bed which is really creaky (which I’m sure is why the downstairs neighbour is complaining, but that is not my fault at all, the Airbnb host should really fix that and has had comments on it before. Actually in a previous review, a guest was told to sleep on the floor if they weren’t comfortable). Yeah. We also have one pillow each, super flat, very uncomfortable yet again. The quality of the cleaning on the pots and pans is making me question how clean the bedding is.
On the positives it’s in a really nice location, the building is safe, the street is safe, aesthetically the kitchen is nice, but that’s about it. My question is this: if I’m paying €125 per night staying in an Airbnb, why the fuck can I not cook and why the fuck am I being pestered by someone else’s neighbour? Is this reason enough to demand compensation? I’ve never done this before with Airbnb, we are really agreeable people and very understanding. Our previous host literally had a leak which fucked up the floorboards and the TV did not work - did we care? No! He communicated it. Not a problem.
I’ve never felt inclined to leave a poor review like this but to be honest, I am really disappointed.
