[Keelung Fortress Command]
About the Historic Site
In 1896 (Meiji 29), the Japanese military set up the "Keelung Fortress Command Post" in Keelung, which was officially upgraded to the "Keelung Fortress Command" in 1903 (Meiji 36). Its jurisdiction covered a vast area, including Keelung, Audi, Jinshan, Tamsui, Hsinchu, and Houlong. During the Japanese colonial period, it stood as the highest military command center in northern Taiwan. Originally operating as the Keelung Army Ordnance Branch Factory and the Keelung Branch of the Fortification Department, the Command continued to handle weaponry and fortress construction after its formal establishment. By incorporating both the artillery and engineering divisions, it became the supreme authority of the entire Keelung Fortress. In September 1928 (Showa 3), construction on the headquarters building started in Dashawan, and it was completed in April of the following year.

Street Photography with SG-Image AF 25mm F1.8 (Dadaocheng, Zhongshan & Xinyi)
I’ve had this lens for a few days now, and of course, when you get a new toy, you just have to take it out for a spin.
Here is my setup for the day:
- OM SYSTEM OM-3 + SG-Image AF 25mm F1.8 M43
I’ve included my personal hands-on thoughts and experiences at the end of this post.
Today, I took a stroll through Dadaocheng, Zhongshan Station, and the Xinyi District. It was also a chance for me to revisit the places where I used to go shopping with my mother.
My Personal Experience & Thoughts
- AF Speed: The autofocus is fast, though it still can't compete with PRO lenses, and it’s slightly slower than the Panasonic 15mm.
- Image Quality: Center sharpness is quite good, but the edges are visibly weaker.
- Lens Profiles: For lens correction, you can simply apply the OM 25mm profile.
- AF Accuracy: It’s generally quite accurate, though it occasionally glitched or hunted on a few rare shots.
- Build & Value: The lens looks incredibly handsome and is very budget-friendly.
- Color Rendition: I actually quite like the colors; it has a distinct style that sets it apart from both OM SYSTEM and Panasonic.
- Bokeh: The out-of-focus background rendering (bokeh) is rather average
- There are issues with autofocus during video recording; the OM-3 can't track focus and stays locked on the initial focus point.

OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7: Unboxing, Snapshots & First Impressions
I’ve always wanted a pocket-sized camera that I can take anywhere and use on any occasion—whether it's underwater shooting, macro photography, street snapshots, or when I just need a zoom lens.
I originally planned to wait for the TG-8, but considering OM SYSTEM's current update cycle, it feels like it’s going to be a long wait. So, I finally pulled the trigger and got the OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7.
At the end of this post, I'll also share some of my personal hands-on thoughts and experiences.
My Personal Experience & Thoughts
Pros:
- Weatherproof peace of mind: No need to worry about the rain; you can just toss it around and use it anywhere.
- Pocket-friendly and dustproof: No worries when sliding it into your pocket; there's no fear of dust getting inside.
- Fast startup speed: It powers on very quickly, keeping up with any other brand.
- Highly versatile focal range: The 25-100mm (35mm equivalent) focal length is extremely practical.
- Built-in GPS: It tracks your location even when turned off, and you can import the log data into other OM cameras via the OI.Share app.
- Decent autofocus speed: The AF speed is reasonably fast.
- Great noise reduction pairing: Combined with DxO PhotoLab's noise reduction, ISO 6400 is barely usable.
- Beautiful colors: The color rendition out of the camera is excellent.
Cons:
- Two-step AF point shifting: Moving the focus point requires holding down the OK button for two seconds first, which is a bit clunky.
- Too few AF points: Tracking AF is practically useless—just pretend it doesn't exist.
- Off-center built-in flash: Because the flash isn't centered, it's hard to use effectively without a diffuser.
- No EVF: The lack of an electronic viewfinder makes shooting under bright sunlight quite a hassle.
- Poor image stabilization: The stabilization is quite weak (I’ve been spoiled by other OM cameras for too long, so I'm not used to this). As a result, I set my minimum shutter speed to 1/80s.
- Slow low-light autofocus: AF slows down significantly in dark environments.
- Low resolution: 12 megapixels is just too low. Much like smartphones using 4-in-1 pixel binning, the files leave very little room for cropping.

Japan Travel: Yamadera, Tsutsujigaoka Park, Matsushima, Asakusa, and Shinjuku Gyoen
Day 4: Yamadera & Tsutsujigaoka Park Today, I made a special trip up the mountain to take in the breathtaking views of Yamadera. It is said to be a very famous sacred mountain in Japan.
Day 5: Matsushima & Asakusa I took a boat tour around Matsushima, which is renowned as one of the Three Views of Japan. For this trip, all the telephoto shots were taken with the OM 40-150mm F2.8 PRO combined with the 1.4x teleconverter. The image quality turned out much better than I expected. Unfortunately, due to the heavy heat shimmer, the image quality would degrade whenever I pushed the focal length past 350mm (35mm equivalent).
The Final Day... It’s the last day... Holding onto the mindset of exploring as much as possible until the very last minute, I headed out to catch more cherry blossoms. Visiting here for the first time, I never expected to find such a beautiful, traditional Japanese garden tucked away in a fashionable, bustling district like Shinjuku.
Gear:

- OM SYSTEM OM-1 II + OM 40-150mm F2.8 PRO

SG-Image AF 25mm F1.8 vs. Panasonic LEICA DG 15mm F1.7 Test Shots
I'm heading out tonight with two sets of cameras and lenses for some real-world shooting tests to see how this particular lens performs.
- Gear 1: OM SYSTEM OM-3 + SG-Image AF 25mm F1.8 M43
- Gear 2: OM SYSTEM OM-1 II + Panasonic LEICA DG 15mm F1.7
I chose these two simply because I wanted a lightweight, compact setup. Since they have different focal lengths, I’ll do my best to shoot with similar compositions. Hope this helps as a reference!

Today's Gear:
- OM SYSTEM OM-3 + 12-40mm F2.8 PRO II
- OM-1 II + 40-150mm F2.8 PRO
- Wide-angle: 8-25mm F4.0 PRO
Finally made it to the main event next to Ogawara Station! Capturing that iconic combination of cherry blossoms and the train was everything I hoped for. This view alone made all the effort today totally worth it!

My gear for this 6-day Tohoku cherry blossom trip: 📷
- OM SYSTEM OM-3 + 12-40mm F2.8 PRO II
- OM-1 II + 40-150mm F2.8 PRO
- Wide-angle: 8-25mm F4.0 PRO
Also made the switch from Lightroom Classic to DxO PhotoLab for this batch! Kept it simple with a two-body, two-lens setup to minimize lens changes.
Day 1: Tsutsujigaoka Park 🌸 Flights to Sendai were pricey, so I flew into Tokyo (spotted an awesome Godzilla display at Haneda!) and took the Shinkansen up.
Japan never disappoints during sakura season. Tsutsujigaoka Park is just a 10-minute walk from Sendai Station, yet it’s bursting with gorgeous cherry blossoms. Absolute perfection.

Fubon Museum Special Exhibition—Resonance: A Symphony of Light, Love, and Color & Stepping into Eternity: Giacometti, Miró, Calder (OM SYSTEM OM-3)
It’s a chilly and overcast day today, so I decided to head over to the Fubon Museum of Art in Taipei. I’ve been looking forward to this dual exhibition for a long time: Resonance: A Symphony of Light, Love, and Color & Stepping into Eternity: Giacometti, Miró, Calder.
Camera gear: OM SYSTEM OM-3 + OM 8-25mm F4.0 PRO
This lens is an absolute gem for indoors. Pair it with the OM-3’s high ISO capabilities and DxO PhotoLab's noise reduction, and an F4 aperture is more than enough.

Yokohama 5-Day Trip (Insights on Switching from Canon to OM System) — Bringing Along the OM-3 & OM-1I 橫濱5日遊(出佳為奧的心得)帶上OM-3&OM-1II
Last year, when I took my Canon R5 Mark II and the f/2.8 Holy Trinity lenses on a trip to Korea, I had a harsh realization: I’m getting old. My stamina just wasn't up to it anymore, and that setup felt incredibly heavy.
Fast forward to this year—during a trip to Japan, I spontaneously picked up an Olympus E-P7 twin-lens kit. To my surprise, with the magic of DxO PureRAW, the image quality out of the E-P7 was actually quite acceptable! Having shot with Canon for over a decade, this experience officially sparked the idea of "leaving Canon for OM System."
This post is a recap of my recent gear-buying spree in Japan, where I brought along the OM-3 and OM-1 Mark II to hunt for lenses.
The Lens Lineup:
- OM SYSTEM 8-25mm f/4 PRO
- OM SYSTEM 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO II
- M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO
- OM SYSTEM 100-400mm II
- Panasonic Leica 9mm f/1.7
Fair warning: there are a lot of photos ahead, and my photography skills are pretty mediocre, so please forgive me if they hurt your eyes!
At the very end of the post, I’ve also put together a quick breakdown summarizing the main differences I’ve noticed between Canon and OM System.
(Note: I previously used the Canon EOS R5 Mark II)
1. Handling & Control
- Canon's Fv (Flexible Priority) mode is an absolute classic. You can instantly switch between Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority on the fly—I haven't seen any other brand beat Canon at this.
- OM System, on the other hand, comes with built-in Live ND and Live GND (Graduated ND) filters. Honestly... they are incredibly practical. What's even better is that the output files remain in RAW format, making post-processing a breeze without the need to carry extra physical filters.
2. Autofocus
- Low-light autofocus: Canon R5II wins.
- Focusing through glass: Canon R5II wins.
- Bird tracking autofocus: OM-3 wins.
- Note: The differences only stand out in extreme conditions; under normal day-to-day shooting, there isn't much of a difference. Also, the single-point AF grid movement on OM covers a larger distance per click than Canon's, which feels a bit more abrupt and takes some getting used to.
3. Image Quality
This goes without saying—a larger sensor size completely dominates (physics is physics). Plus, the image quality out of the R5II sensor is phenomenal. However, the sensors on the OM-3 and OM-1II aren't bad either, especially after running them through DxO PureRAW noise reduction, which closes the gap significantly. It is more than acceptable for the vast majority of situations.
4. Image Stabilization (IBIS)
OM wins by a landslide... an absolute landslide. With a 24-70mm equivalent lens, shooting handheld at 1 second yields a success rate of around 90%.
5. Pros and Cons
OM System Pros:
- Compactness: The lenses are remarkably lightweight. Carrying a dual-body setup with the "Holy Trinity" f/2.8 zooms is still lighter than a Canon R5II with its equivalent trinity lenses.
- High playability and versatility when pairing high-resolution modes with slow shutter speeds.
- The Live ND and GND features output raw RAW files, providing an unmatched advantage in post-processing.
- Excellent burst shooting buffer and continuous shooting endurance.
OM System Cons:
- Lens coatings still lag behind Canon's L-series lenses; there is a noticeable difference when it comes to controlling ghosting and chromatic aberration (purple fringing).
- You cannot set a custom shutter sound when using the electronic shutter for high-speed continuous shooting.

Decided to Buy the OM-5II: Impressions After One Month of Use
This camera is perfectly suited as a beginner's first camera or as a backup body for the OM3.
Key Highlights
- Powerful Image Stabilization: Handheld 1-second exposures are effortless, and 1/2-second shots have a 100% success rate.
- Low-Profile for Street Photography: It looks completely non-threatening. Lenses like the Panasonic 15mm f/1.7, OM 17mm f/1.8II, 25mm f/2.8II, and 14-42mm EZ are incredibly compact.
- Effortless Everyday Carry: It easily slips into bags or large pockets, especially when paired with the Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 or Panasonic 20mm f/1.7, which are true pancake lenses.
- Image Quality & High ISO: More than enough for the average user (and it performs even better when run through DxO).
- Video Quality: Sufficient for casual use. 4K 30P is plenty for most people, backed by powerful stabilization and decent wind noise reduction.
- Fast & Accurate Phase-Detection AF: Setting it to manual focus (MF) by default makes street snapshots amazing. Face detection works quite well, though it lacks AI subject tracking—so shooting birds will really test your skills.
- VIVID Color Profile: Excellent for straight-out-of-camera (SOOC) JPEG use. Olympus colors are very pleasing, though among the built-in creative filters, only the monochrome/black-and-white one is genuinely useful...
- Robust Weather Sealing: The body has incredible weather resistance (provided you pair it with a weather-sealed lens... which really makes me want to pick up a 25mm f/1.8II).
- Great Connectivity: Image transfer and GPS syncing via the smartphone app are miles better than Canon's app.
- Beginner-Friendly Features: The simple new menu layout, USB-C charging, a dedicated button to toggle High-Res Shot, Live ND, HDR1, Focus Stacking, and Pro Capture are all incredibly welcoming for newcomers.
- Conclusion This is a highly recommended camera for street photography, everyday carry, hiking, backup use, and beginners. However, it is not ideal for bird photography.
- Today, I brought the OM SYSTEM OM-5II + OM 12-100mm F4 IS PRO to the Argo Badouzi Yacht Marina to check out the "Chao Xiang: Mountain & Sea Keelung Market."
