Electrical problems on my C4 driving me crazy

Hello everyone, I have a 1987 Corvette with an L98 which I’ve refreshed recently, added a new paint job, resurfaced heads, head gaskets, etc, It’s completely redone

Now that I’m done engine-wise, I’m getting her ready to hit the road. But now, the other problems that have been lingering are starting to come up.

One of which being my dash cluster. The RPM screen lights up when I turn the key to “ON” but then dies and shows nothing at all. I checked my distributor and the TACH wire is attached, but I realized the tach filter wasnt grounded, so I grounded it to the rear of the head on the passenger side, should be good now, but still the same result. RPM’s don’t show. I think it might be the actual wire going into the distributor that might be bad so I’ll have to test it.

And now ontop of that, my oil pressure reads “LO” nonstop. It doesn’t change or go up. Should be an easy fix, I bent one of the prongs on the pressure sensor but bent it back to place and thought it’d be okay, I guess it wasn’t..

And the 3rd problem would what I assume to be either the O2 Sensor, IAC valve or the TPI sensor. The RPM’s on my engine after about 2 seconds of being on goes significant up, how much, I couldn’t tell you. ( rpm’s not showing ) But it is very noticeable. I did some tests, and after removing the IAC valve the engine no longer surged and ran actually, pretty good

So most likely a bad IAC, but I’ve also heard that after adding an IAC you need to do some sort of reset? I don’t know the specifics but I’ll have to look more into it

And the icing to the very disgusting cake is my dash cluster, again. Some of the numbers like the coolant temp are just completely indistinguishable. You can’t read what it says, some of the sticks in the numbers aren’t showing, I’ve found that pressing the screen a bit helps kinda see it but not really. And the screen on my RPM’s is completely cracked but still lights up. And that’s about it…

A nice long list of problems. Oh, and I forgot to add that since I painted the engine block it’s smoking all around while it bakes, which adds to the fear. But yeah, if anyone would be able to point me in the right direction or give any advice on anything here It would be extremely appreciated. It’s been very frustrating and I’m just really hoping it isn’t as bad as Im making it out to be. I know it was allot, so if you did, thank you for reading! Have a great day!

TLDR; Engine surges shortly after startup, RPM’s not showing on dash, oil pressure constantly on “LO” and numbers not being displayed clearly on dash.

What transmission fluid do I buy?

Hello everyone! I’m a first time corvette owner, It’s a 1987, and has a 700R4 automatic. I was wondering what fluid would be best for my transmission. I’m aware Dexron III is the recommended, but it’s not made anymore apparently

Should I buy Dexron VI or the DEX/MERC? What would be better? Any helps appreciated, thank you!

I got bored waiting for CMS26 so I decided to do it for real

Got an old 87’ Corvette and gave her a really well-deserved refresh. Took over 6 months of on-and-off hard work, but I’m so happy with the result!

First engine start! Does it sound okay?

Hello everyone! For some context, I’ve just finished up my first engine build ever. I took an old beat up L98 from a 1987 Corvette and refreshed it. I put in new gaskets for the entire engine, new rings, push rods, rollers, freeze plugs, etc. I also got the heads resurfaced, which it really needed since they were very warped apparently

Today, after 5+ months of extremely meticulous and hard work, I finally started her up, and I couldn’t be happier. It’s my dream car and a beautiful engine, I’ve had a grin ear-to-ear for the past 7 hours now. I’m making this post in the hopes that someone who knows more than me can tell if the engine sounds good or not. At the moment it’s not properly timed, again, it was my first time starting it. But I will be timing it properly ASAP! And if you couldn’t tell by the deafening sound its had the exhaust pipe removed since I still need to do some transmission work, so that’s why it sounds like a tractor

Any advice is seriously appreciated! Thank you for reading!

Unknown metal tube on plenum?

Hello, I hope you’ve all been having a great day so far. I have a 1987 L98, and I was finishing up my engine and noticed on the passenger side of my throttle body there’s a small tube in between what I assume are two coolant passages going into it. What goes into it? And where does it connect to? Is it related to EGR? Would really like to know just to have peace of mind. Thank you for reading!

Where can I buy the O-ring/ seal for the TCC connector for a 1987 Corvette?

My transmission has been leaking from the sensor above the fluid pan, I’m assuming it’s the TCC Solenoid but I just can’t for the life of me find the O-ring meant to go there. Does anyone know where I could get it? Many thanks!

Question about bell-housing bolts on L98, 1987 C4 Corvette

Hello! I'm currently installing the bell housing bolts into my engine, and I was just hoping if I could get some re-assurance or advice to know if I've got everything right before I finish everything up and get her ready to hit the road!

To simplify what I mean, I decided to take the time to make these 2 very professional drawings using mspaint. The bell housing has a total of 6 bolts, which I've numbered left to right

Bolt #1 has a weird metal bracket that holds the wire clump going to the oil filter area.
Bolt #2 has a ground wire coming from somewhere near the battery, not 100% sure where but I think it goes there?
Bolt #3 Just has a flat washer between the bolt and the actual bell housing.
Bolt #4 Holds the transmission fluid tube in place
Bolt #5 and #6 I don't know if they hold anything other than flat washers.

Do I have everything right or is something off? Please let me know! I'm not sure if all bolts need a washer but for some reason I have less washers than I do bolts, about 2-3. Any help is appreciated! Thank you for reading!

Am I starting to thin hair?

Washed my hair and noticed that it seemed really thin in this section, is this just because of my hair being all clumped together after showering or is this an early sign?

What goes into the hole on the left?

Hello! I’m preparing to finally install my engine ( L98 ) and was left absolutely dumbfounded by this threaded hole on the drivers side of the engine. ( The hole to the left near the freeze plug. ) It goes into the block, and I don’t know if it’s a sensor that goes there or maybe some kind of bolt? Idk! But even if it was a sensor, I can’t find one that fits in this hole anywhere

If anyone can help me here I would seriously appreciate it, I can’t find any information online on this

Can I just close off this tube on the EGR Valve?

Hello, I’m currently re-assembling my engine and have reached the point where I’m installing the top end stuff that goes on the intake manifold

This specific engine that I bought had the EGR system completely deleted, which I hear is both good and bad, I’m not sure honestly. Less wires and clutter in the engine bay is definitely a big plus though

But my question is, if I wanted to do a block off on this EGR Valve can I just weld the hole on the tube thingy shut or do I need to do something else? Should I just buy an EGR block off plate instead? Thank you for reading!

Questions on L98 engine assembly

Hello all, I’m currently still in the process of assembling my L98 engine for my 1987 corvette. Ive reached a point in the assembly process where all that’s left are things like sensors and things of that sort, I’m almost there! But I’ve hit a few stumps and have a few more questions before I can fully assemble it. I decided I’d ask here since online there’s barely any information on what I’m looking for..

My first question is, what is this metal hook thing near the dipstick tube? I know that it’s supposed to go here. But I cant for the life of me figure out how it should be positioned or what it’s supposed to do.

Second question is, was this little metal clip installed correctly? I’m pretty sure it’s a ground so really wanna make sure it’s on right

And my last question is the most important one I’d say, why does my intake manifold only have 2 holes for sensors in the front when the other engine that I’m ripping parts has 3?

Any help is seriously appreciated, and thank you all for the previous help! I would not have gotten this far without it! Thank you for reading

Found him while walking through my farm

No clue what it is but it’s huge!! I live in the middle of Florida near the lake. The bug is about the size of a really big cockroach, found it outside hanging onto a few strands of my tiki umbrella. Really wanted to take a closer photo but I got scared since it seems like the dude could come flying at me. I love bugs so I really wanna know, what is it???

What are the name of these pieces?

Hello again! I just finished the grueling process of removing the L98 engine from my 87’. Unfortunately, in the process, thanks to shocking amounts of stupidity and ignorance I may have broken a thing or two or three. And as for the engine, I’m gonna be adding another L98, but this new one’s squeaky clean. this one was junk but I will be reusing some parts here and there.

It was my first time ever doing this sort of thing so it’s honestly not the worst outcome! I’ve attached the photos to this post👍

First photo seems like a cable of some sort, absolutely snapped in half. There were around 3 if I remember correctly on the side of the throttle body

Second photo are some prongs on what seems to me like a sensor that got bent all the way down..

Third photo seems like a wire of some sort got clamped? Not sure if this is apart of the EGR system but it was around the rear of the engine near the distributor. The previous owner added an EGR block off plate and all sorts of things things that go along with it.

Fourth photo I genuinely have no clue where it came from. I’m drawing a blank here. I always mark and organize parts when I take them off so I must’ve missed this one. I don’t know. Any help at all is seriously appreciated, thank you for reading!

Leak coming from sensor in the transmission??

Hello all! I’ve been working on changing the engine on my 1987 Corvette since the old one was very bad for lack of a better word. Previous owner was not very attentive of the car.

Thing is though after getting down there I noticed a transmission fluid leak coming from this sensor? Why is this happening? Should I buy a new sensor or is there something I should do that could stop it? This is my first time working on one of these cars so I’m still getting familiar with it. Transmission is a 4L60, any help is seriously appreciated!

What do these small dots on a lifter roller mean?

I’m currently working on assembling an SBC 350. It’s an L98 for a Corvette, and I’m in the middle of finally installing the lifter rollers, but I just happened to notice halfway through that they have a small hole on one side? What does it mean?

The hole points to the side, so it could only point left and right. Where is it supposed to go? Facing the other roller? I couldn’t find any info on it online so thought i’d ask here, thank you so much for reading!

Is this “flush” enough?

First time working on an engine. I’m currently working on a SBC 350, an L98 if you need to know. And I’m in the process of installing a new front main seal but it for the life of me will not go in all the way. I’m using a 2 inch PVC to get it in. As it is now, it slightly protrudes out and I’m not sure if that’s as much as it goes or if it’s not seated all the way. Any help is seriously appreciated!!

Are these the right head gaskets??

Hello! I’m currently working on changing the head gaskets on my 1987 Corvettes L98 engine. I still have to clean the piston walls and etc, I was just trying them on. I’m using a head gasket from a FELPRO engine gasket kit, but it just seems off? I’ve never done head gaskets before, so I can’t tell if it’s intentional or not, but it doesn’t sit on the mating surface 100%, and had a hole going into the intake manifold area for some reason? Is this intentional or did I buy the wrong set? Any help is appreciated!

What are these connections for?

Currently working on a 1987 Corvette I bought pretty recently, and noticed these three sensor/ connectors just sort of zip-tied together and sitting around. Are these supposed to go somewhere? I'm still getting familiar with the engine and engines in general, so I'm not sure where these could've went or how to figure it out

I also noticed after taking off the upper Intake manifold, or "plenum" I think is what its called, that the previous owner blocked off the EGR valve. Why would someone do this? I've tried doing research but from what I've seen it does more bad than good I think? Should I get an EGR Valve back on or keep it as is? Any help is appreciated, thank you for reading!
