For example, Toph's parents were overly controlling, so she decided not to be like them and gave her daughters too much freedom, which didn't turn out so well. On the other hand, Zuko was probably a good father; it's a pity we weren't shown his relationship with his daughter, but I think he was a decent dad. He had a loving mother and his uncle as good role models, and through his own father, Ozai, Zuko learned exactly what kind of father not to be.
Aang didn't understand the importance of fatherhood and upbringing because he never had parents himself. You could bring up Gyatso as an example, but he was more of a friend than a parent.
