How I forced Sony India to fix my WH-ULT900N for FREE after they demanded ₹8,484 for a known defect.
Hey folks, just wanted to share a massive win against corporate bullying. If you’ve ever been denied a warranty claim for a known manufacturing defect under the excuse of "physical damage," this post is for you.
The Problem:
I own a pair of Sony WH-ULT900N (Forest Gray). Out of nowhere, under normal usage, a crack developed on the rotating shaft of the left headband. I dropped it off at my local Authorized Service Center (ASC). A few days later, Sony’s Regional Customer Support emailed me completely rejecting my FOC (Free of Cost) repair. They classified a structural failure as "physical damage" and slapped me with a repair estimate of ₹8,484.
The Catch:
I knew I didn't break them. A quick search showed that Sony Global actually issued a public Service Program acknowledging a massive design flaw in this exact model ("Cracks may occur on the rotating shaft..."). My serial number fell exactly in that defective batch. When I confronted the local ASC and the regional team, they played dumb, blaming the "Indian backend database."
The Retaliation:
I didn't have the time to fight a 2-year long court battle, but I wasn't going to pay 8.5k for their manufacturing defect. So, I sat down with my uncle (who is an advocate), did some solid legal research, and drafted a hard-hitting Consumer Court complaint meant for the Govt. of India's E-Jagriti portal.
I emailed the PDF preview of our drafted legal complaint directly to Sony Corporate and the Grievance Officer. I attached the Global Service Program notice and gave them a strict 48-hour ultimatum before I officially filed it online. After that I WhatsApped the exact same draft to the local ASC manager. I formally intimated him that he and his service center are named as "Opposite Party No. 2 and 3" in my lawsuit and would have to physically appear in the District Court.
I absolutely REFUSED to bring my unrepaired headphones back home. Leaving them at the service center meant the job sheet stayed 'Open' and the liability remained on them.
The Victory:
The 48-hour window passed. Suddenly, the local ASC called me up. The tone had completely changed. "Sir, we have arranged the parts under a special request, your FOC repair is approved." Yeah, special request my foot. The moment they saw their names on a legit court draft, they folded.
I went to pick them up today. They tried to get me to sign a paper that still had the ₹8,484 amount printed on it (never sign this, it’s an 'Acknowledgment of Debt' and voids your warranty). I made them print a clean ZERO bill stating full FOC repair, tested the ANC and hinges at the counter, signed it, and walked out.
