am i wrong?

I’m moving out of my apartment because the place wasn’t up to code and I quite frankly could not stand my roommates.

For the last three months I was livinf with my boyfriend and another couple who we were friends with, my boyfriend was miserable everyday and decided to move out super last minute which was fine because he’s an adult and he can afford to move out. He did not sign anything as he was illegally subletting, something I was against because I don’t like the feeling that we’re lying. I was outvoted and we did not tell the landlord, so they have no legal obligations to stay here. They were planning on moving out September 1 to move into their own place, but they would not be able to move before September 1 and decided to stay with us since it was such a short period of time.

When he moved out that left me and the other couple, they refused to pay 1/3 of the rent each, but rather 1/4 of rent each and left me the other 1/2. I told them no and then they eventually agreed. I did not pay my rent in August, which I was upfront and clear about not paying. She said it was fine and she had the money to do pay the other half. She then proceeded to go behind my back and get a pet without my knowledge, I did not know she did this until I came home and there was a dog. Then she demanded I pay for the rent as the dog was too expensive and she could not afford the other half of the rent.

I am still in school and did not make more than $400, so I told her I would talk to my parents. They said they would’ve helped me if it was any other month (they have helped me in the past when i could not come up with the money), but since we paid last month’s rent we should not have to pay again. They refused to help me this month. Eventually they ended up finding the money and paying the other half of the rent.

Since I paid $1000 for my last month on my own, I asked for the difference back as they agreed to pay 1/3 of the rent now, rather than 1/2. They refused to give me that money because they were not in the financial situation to do so. I told them that they could pay me back whenever they felt as though they were able to, they’re my friends and I wouldn’t make them go broke just because. They then proceeded to tell me I did not deserve that money because they paid $2000 this month to avoid eviction.

I told them that’s what happens when you move into a new apartment (as the boyfriend’s name was not on the lease, but now is). He then told me he dipped into his savings to pay for the rent, which i sympathize with and understand where he is coming from. I do not have savings which I can dip into and hand him the money. He told me I was not entitled to get that money and if I wanted it so badly I should go and beg my boyfriend for it.

I told them plain and simple that either they could return my money or they can pay the bills on their own because I was not helping them. They yelled at me and called me immature and then threatened to call my parents, who originally told me not to pay utilities if they pulled this. I was not going to be subjected to blackmail so I told them that they can call my parents. While I don’t care if they tell my parents about the hydro, I’m scared about what other things she might tell my parents as they are physically abusive and don’t know much about my life anymore.

Ever since I told them I wanted my money I have been continuously pushed out of the apartment, they have blocked the hallway, I am unable to reach the bathroom without moving their stuff, I am unable to enter the living room as they have created a barrier for a dog, the bathroom is constantly littered with their dirty clothes and they knock over my expensive shampoo. They gave someone from their family a key to the apartment without asking me if it was okay.

I understand that I am moving out, but they have made it so unbearable for me to live here for another 2 weeks.

Should I suck it up and pay utilities and cut my losses, or should I continue my stance and not pay utilities?

is this safe?

My roommates recently got a dog (without consulting me) and they have been taking care of the dog to the best of my knowledge. I personally do not interact with this dog because they keep it locked up in their room and they have blocked off the living room from me.

The other night around 2 am I found out that they have been locking the dog in an unventilated bathroom. The bathroom floor has a few of my shower products which I know cannot be good for the dog if it took a bite, and this dog is a biter. They lock him in there when he’s being bad, which is what they were trying to do this night. I put a stop to it for the night, but they have been doing it continuously.

The dog is usually locked inside of its crate in a dark room all alone during the day and is only let out during the night. Yesterday there was a bad storm and the dog was whimpering and barking, clearly scared. As he is a new puppy, this was his first bad storm. He was all alone and I could not reach either roommate, so I broke into the room and let the dog out. He seemed much more relaxed and happy out in the living room, where it was much brighter and nicer for him.

I feel like this is some sort of abuse, but I’m not sure. Any tips on what to do?

what can I do?

My roommate has been illegally subletting the apartment to her boyfriend.

Our rent is $2000 a month and I’ve been paying my fairshare, but it’s gotten so hard recently to live with her and her boyfriend because he’s constantly over (at least that’s what I thought), so I broke the lease and I’m finding her a new roommate.

Recently they got a dog without asking me or even having a conversation with me about getting a dog and I told her that I want to be off of the lease, even if I don’t find a roommate because she’s been doing things without asking me.

She agreed and said she would change the name on the lease to her boyfriend’s since he already lives here. I was like ??? since when. She answered he’s been living here the whole tenancy. For three months he’s been living here.

I don’t really go outside of my room, if I do, I work late and they’re already in bed or I wake up insanely early for work and leave before they’re even up and I’m gone all day. So I did not realize that he was living here.

I asked her to reimburse me for the money if he’s been living here, because $1000 was a lot considering I barely make enough money for food after rent whereas she’s been paying only $500.

She told me no because the agreement was that me and her were going to split the rent, the rent which was not being split evenly.

I now want to tell my landlord about this because she has been a terrible friend to me for the last few months with him living there and her demanding I pay for her half of the rent because her dog was too expensive.

I’m not paying for her half of the rent especially because she’s been screwing me over for the last four months. I don’t care if this shit screws her over, because it’s what she’s been doing to me for months now.

Do I tell him, or do I leave silently because she refuses to give me the money.

edit: i forgot to mention, I have a private balcony in my room which I wish I could use more often, but I cannot fit any furniture on the balcony due to him putting his tires there without my permission. I came home one day while we were still moving with the tires on my balcony.

I asked them about it and their response was “he doesn’t have anywhere else to put them”

Am I stupid?

My friend and I rented a place in Sandy hill, we are going into our second year of University in September, but the place we live in is a shit hole. The building is not up to code and our neighbors are terrible people. We continuously talked about moving out together and finding a new place. At first we talked about breaking the lease legally because we most likely could and talked to a representative about legal advice, we talked to a lawyer and a paralegal (granted we knew all of these people) and we made it clear that both of us wanted to move out.

Fastforward, my food was continuing to mold because the building was not up to code, so I messaged the landlord and he suggested breaking the lease. I did not ask him to, nor did I personally suggest that. This conversation happened in person, in our living room. I messaged my roommate and knocked on her bedroom door, she did not respond for an hour and then when she did come out she told me she ignored me because she thought I was the landlord. So I told her what happened and she was excited about moving out, it wasn’t final yet, but she started looking at different places for us to move into and even contacting people. This morning the lease termination was fully talked through and we were good to go.

I was excited and told her, we then talked about price points and where we wanted to live. We are currently paying $2000 for our apartment and she wanted something less and I agreed. I told her we can start looking for something less and if we cannot find something nice then we can expand our budget. She told me to only look in the sandy hill area. I told her no because that doesn’t make sense, sandy hill is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Ottawa, we could easily find something cheaper in Blair, but she refuses to move because she can’t use public transit. When I asked her why, she said she had some bad experiences, which fair because I have too, but that’s adulting.

She then changed her mind about moving out and talked to the landlord behind my back and said that we were not moving out anymore and want to continue to live here. When I got the call from the landlord I was confused because we never actually talked about it. When I confronted her, I did say some things I’m not proud of, but I will not be apologizing because she should’ve talked to me first, she blamed me for the entire situation. She told me it was all my fault we were living here because my parents wanted me to get a place as fast as we could. My parents were rushing us, but that’s because I’m from outside of Ontario and need to book a plane ticket whereas she can just drive back home for a fraction of the cost. If we had not signed for this place I would’ve had to buy a last minute plane ticket as we signed the lease 2 weeks before school ended.

She keeps repeating that I did not have a proper conversation with her about moving out and did not include her in the conversation about the lease termination and I screwed her over. She called me a bad friend for making her move far away from school and her job at the Rideau Centre.

She refuses to terminate my end of the lease so she can take over the full lease as well and expects me to find a roommate for her, which is not my responsibility especially because she will be living with them not me.

Am I in the wrong here, do I continue to live here?
