Do any of you guys keep camels?

Hi, I am a student with 4 years of experience in zoo keeping, and I'm thinking about starting a Bactrian camel and alpaca "farm" mainly for wool production once I get out of school and save up some (a lot) money.

And while I have plenty of experience in taking care of camels and llamas, I am kind of clueless about the economic side of things. So if any of you keep camels, I have a few questions:

● How much land do you need for them to be able to graze the majority of their feed? (when grazing is possible, of course)

● How much do you spend on hay per year?

● How much do you spend on the other parts of their feed?

● How much does veterinary care cost you per year?

● What are some expenses I may not be considering?

● Are you makeing any money of of keeping camels?

● Can, theoreticaly, at least a sliver of profit be made if you consider selling wool products, calves, visits to people wanting to see camels and potentially from selling meat?

Thank you in advance for any and all advice :)

TLDR: I wanna make a living keeping camels, but have no idea what things cost because stupid.

Have you ever seen this behavior?

We have a vet appointment first thing tomorrow morning, but I’m curious if anyone’s dog has ever displayed this behavior and what the outcome was. She is six years old and has congenital kidney disease (renal dysplasia). This started yesterday morning when she was eating, so I am of the impression that it’s a dental issue. I applied some pressure to her snout all the way to the back of her jaw though, and she doesn’t seem to be in any pain so I’m also worried it could be neurological.

Update: The vet sedated her so she could get a good look at her mouth/teeth, throat and ears. She didn’t find anything concerning. She prescribed antibiotics as a precaution, gabapentin and an NSAID for pain. We were instructed to monitor her progress and report back immediately if any other concerning symptoms pop up or the chattering doesn’t stop within the next week.

Need help bonding 2 cats and a husky

Hey all,

I’m looking for advice in bonding my 2 ~1 year old (bonded) cats with my girlfriend’s ~1 year old husky mix.

We have attempted bringing the husky into my house (cats house) twice.

First time both cats hissed, then we took the husky out as it was obvious the cats didn’t like husky. Cats hair were up like they were scared.

Second time we tried putting the cats in a sizable dog carrier in the kitchen with the kitchen being blocked off. After being let out, the orange barn cat attacked the husky , husky whimpered, then the husky was taken out of the house. (Husky had no inclination to fight)

Something my gf mentioned is that it seemed like the orange barn cat was attempting to protect the other cat.

In hindsight before someone mentions it, I can see how putting the cats in a cage in their own home is counter-intuitive , but we really want them to be bonded so we can have them together for when we move in.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Possible exposure to pets

Hello! I wasnt totally sure where to post this because we still arent 100% sure that mold is the issue here but its seeming possible.

About two years ago, my boyfriend and I moved into an apartment with my 12 year old cat. After about a month or so, my cat started having wheezing fits. We took him into the vet and after a check up the doctor didnt find anything wrong but suggested maybe the wheezing was due to age or weight (he was an overweight cat). He recieved steroids for the wheezing under the impression it was asthmatic and we went on our way. He recieved two more shots afterwards whenever we noticed his wheezing getting bad again until one morning we woke up to him completely immobile and in pain and the vet suggested the kindest thing for him at that point was euthanasia. Months later, we decided to rescue a kitten from our local shelter. We noticed that he was beginning to wheeze as well. We rushed him to the vet immediately to be told that his lungs were just adjusting from the shelter to our new home. He continued wheezing and we brought him back for the vet to x-ray and run tests only for everything to seem fine and the doctor to send us on our way again. Loki (our kitten) is now half a year old and is STILL wheezing. We have tried dust free litter, air purifiers, no candles or incense, no strong cleaners, and still nothing seems to be helping. We have become suspicious that the apartment we are living in has mold and is making our pets sick. I bought mold tests that will arrive today so I can test our apartment, and we have a tour this evening for a new place but my boyfriend and I are so desperate and lost on what is the right thing to do. Has anyone else experienced similar issues? What should we do??

Am I doomed to a pet free life?

Growing up I had a mixture of all kinds of pets from cats and dogs to exotics like lizards and snakes. For most of my life though I had cats and have always had a soft spot for them, but now that I’m older and living alone I wonder if a dog might be a good companion? Not for protection or anything like that, but a reason to get up and move maybe explore my area. I have concerns though because of my lifestyle and I’m unsure how a pet would fit.

Context I’m 24, I work a 9-5 job for the most part but there are inconsistencies in my schedule, and I live in a small apartment alone. I’m worried that my job would get in the way of properly training any animal, cat or dog. My last pet was when I was in school (elementary) and my mom took charge on training. Please don’t take that as I don’t know how to properly care for my pets, my mom made sure I was engaged in the process. I do have more experience with cats than I do dogs. I know that new pets require a lot of training especially depending on age and background.

I just don’t want to get a pet, cat or small dog, and then not being able to balance everything and end up with an animal that is maladjusted. My biggest concern is potty training and socialization throughout the day. If you have been in a similar experience I would love to hear what you have to say or if you have any advice.

My old dog might be pregnant and I don’t know what to do

So technically she’s not my dog but my younger sister dog anyways last year I got a male puppy around this time in June it’s about to be a year since I got him and we haven’t neutered him and my female dog isn’t spayed. So recently she was in her heat cycle and on her period this is the first time I’ve seen her try to rub her behind on my male dog. I noticed that they were trying to mount knowing that they weren’t neutered or speed, I kept an eye on them as much as I could. My female dog is now nine years old and my male dog is about to turn a year old. I’m really afraid of my female dog being pregnant since she’s a Chihuahua mixed with the Yorkie and I heard those smaller breeds have high risk pregnancies. I believe she was in heat about two or three weeks ago and I can’t tell if I’m being extra paranoid, but she does seem a bit more tired I guess and more irritated with my male dog. I took a look at her nipples, but I couldn’t see a difference from before I want to go to the vet, but I really don’t have the money for it. I thought about buying those test kits for pregnancy in dogs off of Amazon, but I don’t know if those are accurate enough. I want to get an abortion if she does have puppies or is pregnant because I just can’t deal with the idea of my dog, passing away, trying to give birth. Any advice on what I should do.

Rabies?

Hi, I am dealing with a massive health anxiety spiral right now and really need someone to talk me down.
So basically 25 days ago I was trying to rescue this tiny 1-month-old stray kitten stuck in a thorny bush. While holding it, I got a tiny scratch on my ring finger. Ngl I’m not even 100% sure if it was from the kitten's paw or just a sharp thorn, but I’ve been assuming the worst. I was way too scared to tell my parents so I never got the vaccine smh.
Fyi on the day it happened, all the kittens were acting completely normal and healthy. They were meowing, eating treats, drinking milk, and sleeping cuddled up next to their mom. But over the next few days things went downhill. The building guard told me the first kitten died after falling off a high apartment wall into a tree trunk base. He said he rescued it and it drank milk but died the next day, which sounds like internal injuries from the fall. A couple of days later he told me the second kitten also died, idk why though.
On day 8 after the scratch I went out and fed the third surviving kitten and the mom cat. Both of them ate eagerly, looked perfectly healthy, and were playing.
I didn't get a chance to feed them again until yesterday, which was Day 25. The mom cat was right there looking totally healthy and eating fine. But the guard said he hasn't seen the last kitten in a while, so idk if it wandered off, got adopted, or died too. The issue is I don't know which of the three kittens scratched me, though I know they were all eating, drinking, and acting totally fine on day one.
Yesterday I sat outside in extreme heat, got drenched in sweat, and got a headache. Then tonight, right after drinking an iced milk coffee, the back of my throat started feeling incredibly weird and coated. My mom looked and said my tonsils look big. It doesn't actually hurt to swallow water at all, but my mind keeps running back to rabies and I'm convinced this is the start of hydrophobia.
The shaking and panic are becoming overwhelming, and the fear is intense. Is this a dangerous situation, or is there a chance everything will be fine?

Attaching photos of the scratch and the mum cat and its only kitten left.

Also the scratch healed perfectly, it’s like it wasn’t even there.

Wound after spaying.

Hello everyone!

My cat had her spaying surgery almost 4 days ago and everything has been fine, but this evening her wound from light pink turned to this.

I'm contacting the vet in the morning but i'm so worried. Can someone please tell me if the wound is infected?

My cat acted normally all day, didn't lack apetite and drank water.

You also may wonder why there is two cuts. She also had cyst removed so that's the reason behind two wounds.

I appreciate and thank for your help.

My neighbor may have killed my cat

I 13f have a older sister with a 3 year old domestic short hair, we haven't seen said cat in about a week or so... Today my sister went out passing flyers in the neighborhood eventually they asked my next door neighbor, when shown the flyer he acted weird and nervous af. Then about 30 min later a car pulls into his driveway and they go clean up a dead animal in his driveway. He has been seen kicking our animals before, and his dog killed out cat years previous. Not only that but our cats have received mysterious injuries after going missing for a few days multiple times. One of our cats is permanently blind in one eye because of it. When we confronted our nextdoor neighbor about him cleaning up some and the smell of chemicals all around his house after a horrid smell coming from his shed for numerous days, he said he cleaned up what he thought was a possum and was acting suspiciously, I just wanted to know if we are getting worried and just being crazy or if he could have actually done something? Where in Tennessee and don't know how to go about with the cops

I’m not sure how to take care of this situation

Read the edit

Maybe about thirty min ago, I found this kitten near my house and she’s not looking to good. She’s about three weeks old it looks like and if I take her to the vet, she’s to young for them to do anything and will probably euthanize her and I don’t want that to happen, but I also don’t want her to go back into the wild and get hurt. What should I do?

Edit: I’m at the vet right now. 9:04 pm central standard time. It seems that they’re going to euthanize her. I’ve read all of your replies and I’ve made the decision that it would be best for her. I feel bad that her life was just starting and this is the way it has to end. Thank you for your help everyone.

Cat pooping all over apartment-appears to be in pain ☹️

My cat started pooping outside the litter box and occasionally vomiting almost 2 years ago. His bloodwork and fecal tests have all been normal. Vet recommended prescription “GI biome” diet. He got a lot better and I thought the issue was fixed. He would still occasionally vomit and pool outside the box but very rarely.

Since April this year he has been having more episodes. I took him to the animal hospital early April because he had severe vomiting and diarrhea with lethargy-they gave him vitamin B12 and fluids and he seemed better. I also treated him for fleas since a vet saw flea residue on him and thought he may have flea allergy.

He has pooped outside the litter box everyday now for almost 2 weeks. He seems to be in pain and he will start going in the box then jump out and run around my apartment while pooping. It’s awful.

He has a vet appointment on Friday. They are recommending an ultrasound. I am wondering if it could be IBD, lymphoma, or some food allergy? He seems like he doesn’t digest food well and his poop has a lot of mucus.

I hate seeing him in discomfort. It’s also very frustrating to have to clean cat poop all over my apartment everyday 😢

If anyone has some advice let me know. He gets probiotic with meals. I feed wet and dry prescription food.

I posted a video of his behavior usually before this happens. He will run fast while pooping so that’s hard to catch on video. His poop usually is separate hard lumps with a lot of mucus or runny.

Thanks

EDIT: I have taken him to the vet many times over the last 2 years, including 3 visits in the last 2 months. He has had bloodwork done, X-rays, and fecal tests. The vet is not sure what is going on so they recently recommended an ultrasound and I have an appointment Friday. I am reaching out here to see if anyone has had similar issues with their cat or any advice. After he poops outside the box he appears asymptomatic. He is still eating and drinking normally at this time. Since this has been a chronic ongoing issue I don’t feel there is a reason to take him to an animal hospital as it’s not an emergency right now.
Simply telling me to take him to the vet is not helpful at this time.

Adopted perfect kitten after soul dog passed, but realizing I need a dog as an ESA. Please help me decide what is best for the kitten!

I’m hoping I’m posting this in the right place. I’m experiencing a lot of guilt and shame narratives around this situation and would greatly appreciate some empathetic advice. My goal is to do what is best for the kitten and myself.

My soul dog, a velcro GSD mix recently passed at 11 years old. He was diabetic for the last year of his life and for the last two months I basically provided 24/7 hospice care for him.

I thought it would be a long time until my heart was ready to raise another a puppy and my current living situation isn’t ideal for a young dog either. I’m currently sharing an apartment so I can save up for my own home with a fenced yard. My goal is to adopt another dog then.

Given my living situation for the foreseeable future and how horribly I was doing without animal companionship, I thought a cat would be a good fit. I grew up with cats and adored them. Whenever I would visit family or friends with cats, I was excited to see them and felt I missed that kind of companionship.

One day I went to see adoptable pets and my heart latched on to a little kitten. His personality seemed ideal for me as he was calm, confident, and social. Some of his mannerisms reminded me of my soul dog. I was still talking about him the next day so I decided to go back and get him.

It’s been a lil over a week and the kitten is settling in amazingly. He is literally the perfect cat. He’s already fit in with my routine and comfortable in the apartment. He bonded to me quickly: he purrs when I pet him or pick him up, I can pet his paws, ears, and belly, he often snuggles with me before and after his naps, and he sleeps with me the whole night. For a cat, he responds well to redirection / training and he isn’t destructive.

I’m floored with how easy it is to care for him to a point it feels strange. I know a good part of it is just the difference in intensity and the newness of it all, but for some reason it doesn’t feel as fulfilling and rewarding…

The challenges I’m having are minor and no fault of the kitten’s. I don’t really like having toys out everywhere and cat furniture in every room. With the dog, I’d put all his toys in one basket and he’d take them out if he wanted to play. He was cool just chilling on my couch. Logically I knew the cat would be navigating vertical space. I guess I underestimated my ability to manage it. I’m having trouble adjusting to him walking over surfaces my dog didn’t even look at. I don’t want him to get hurt and I don’t want my stuff getting broken. And he’s taken an interest in my plants. Not bad behavior, just cat behavior. Is this something that just requires more effort on my part to manage or is this one those things you just gotta accept?

I’m finding myself really craving the social engagement of a dog. My GSD mix LOVED training and learning the rules and he craved structure and my leadership. He was glued to me and I miss the head tilts when I would talk to him. I miss his size and how I could be a lil rowdy when playing with him. I miss how my soul dog would lay on me during a panic attack. I miss how comfortable I felt when we would go on walks and hikes together. I suppose I didn’t realize how much of a dog person I became over the last decade? Or how much dog companionship really fulfilled me emotionally and helped with my PTSD.

The kitten is definitely helping. I enjoy playing with him and snuggling with him. His purring is very comforting at night and my sleep has improved. I look forward to seeing his lil face in the morning and getting up to take care of him.

But it just doesn’t feel enough when I thought it would be. And I don’t think it’s the difference of years of bonding, I feel like it’s the fundamental differences between cats and dogs? Because he's literally the most perfect cat, but I’m realizing it’s not exactly the relationship I want/need with my pet? I'm having a hard time adjusting to his independence.

Would he have a fulfilling life if I kept him and eventually got a dog (obviously keeping in mind the cat is safe and feels secure)? Or would he be better off if I find a home where he will be even more loved? I do adore him and I can feel love growing, but he’s just not a dog. I can’t expect him to be a dog. I don’t want him to get jealous or heartbroken when I get a dog. He deserves an amazingly loving home and to be spoiled and cherished because he is a fabulous kitten. Can I give it to him if my heart is yearning for a dog or will he fit better with someone else? I’d hate to put him through more changes if it won’t make things better for him.

Please help me do what’s best for this little guy. I feel terrible that I’ve put him in this situation.

TL/DR: My soul dog passed and I thought a cat would be the best fit for the foreseeable future. After adopting the perfect kitten, I’m realizing I really do need dog companionship as an ESA. What would be best for the kitten and myself - keeping the kitten and eventually getting a dog or finding a better home for the kitten and then getting a dog?

Fleas on my kitten

Hiya! Just looking for some advice for my new kitten.

We lifted her on Friday night and noticed on Saturday that she was stopping to scratch herself a lot. This went on for a while but we hadn’t seen anything on or under her fur. Now she’s black and white, majority being black with some white patches.

I checked her fur today and noticed a load of black specks deep towards her neckline which is white fur, and down towards her back. Done the flea test of a wet paper towel and noticed straight away that they were dissolving.

My partner had also noticed about 30 minutes before than something ran across her fur.

Ran to Tesco to get some animal shampoo which turned out to be safe for kittens. Well, you can imagine how her first bath went. (Not well.) I was washing away and noticed just how much blood was on her fur with the specks and it was absolutely everywhere. Her fur was turning a pinkish from it. I cleaned her really well, tried not to get too much on her face but unfortunately a lot of those wee specks of blood are towards her upper neck.

Called the emergency vet and he got back to me a few hours ago stating that we’ve done everything right. We’ve hoovered every part of the house, washed all sheets including her own, and made sure upholstery was cleaned well.

Now we don’t know what treatment to use. She’s currently 8 weeks 3 days. We haven’t been recommended any oral tablets as they can (apparently?) be quite harmful to kittens. So we don’t really want to go that route as the vet hasn’t even recommended that treatment.

They have said about flea shampoo and I’d like to know what shampoo would be best for her. As much as she’s fallen out with me from her first bath, she ain’t gonna like the second one she’s about to get lol.

My hearts broke for her, and I’d just like some recommendations on what is suitable for her and what is best! Thank you❤️

My friend has a cat with a giant gash on its neck, and is refusing to let volunteers take him away to cure him

My friend lives in the middle of nowhere in the countryside. There's a cat roaming the area who eventually stuck around because his family feeds it dry food. That's about it though. The cat has never been named, taken to a vet, legally adopted, or spayed.

The cat got bit in the neck by a wild animal (probably a fox) years ago, and the wounded cat was just left like that. It took years for him to heal completely (even that was a miracle). The gash has recently reopened and my friend thinks it's being worsened by their dog (way better kept than the cat) because she licks it.

The cat looks well fed but that's about it. He's dirty, matted, and clearly doesn't clean himself. He still has the giant half scabbed over, half raw wound on his neck, where fur doesn't grow anymore and probably never will. I want to highlight that this wound has been there for years at this point and it looks like it may be getting worse now. I have known this cat for a while and see him very rarely but this last time I saw him it really worried me. These people don't take care of him and nobody that ever came on the farm (many, many friends) has ever been concerned enough for this poor animal to help him or call authorities. I took it upon myself to do so because I don't want to be responsible for his death and this time he may not be so lucky to miraculously heal.

I live in the EU which means cat shelters do not euthanize animals and our local cat shelter would take him in and cure him for free. The cat would 100% not come back though. I contacted a volunteer who told me to ask my friend if they could take the cat, but of course my friend said no. He really has no actual power over the cat though because he doesn't have ownership of it (which is better for him because atp this is animal abuse so he could get in legal trouble for it). So neither me nor another volunteer can go get the cat without encountering resistance. The house is surrounded by fields and I've only ever seen the cat on their property so IDK where else he hangs out that we could get him. The only other option is to call animal control and have it forcibly taken from them. My friend is going to hate me and he probably already does but it felt even worse to just send a stranger to forcibly take the cat away without telling him beforehand.

Am I doing the right thing here? I feel like I'm the only chance this kitty has to survive and live his last years somewhat comfortably...he's really sweet with people but I don't think he'll ever get adopted so he may have to live in the shelter with other cats (it's free roam, they're not in cages) for the rest of his life. Idk how he gets along with cats. Should I still try to go to his house and get the cat myself? Should I just go ahead and call animal control?

New cat, reactive dog. Help.

Hello, so today I found a kitten at my local dumpster and I immediately took it home and I really want to keep it, but I have a reactive dog who I know will try to attack it. Does anybody have any advice on how I can introduce them or get my dog not to be violent towards the kitten? Thanks. (also if you have any questions about the kitten, I plan to take it to a vet.)
