My dog not drinking water because learned wet food
Hey everyone, looking for some advice on resetting my dog's drinking habits.
Over the 6th months, my dog got used to eating home-cooked meals (boiled red rice + chicken) mixed with a lot of liquid/broth. Because of this, he has completely stopped drinking plain water from his bowl.
Whenever I offer fresh, plain water, he sniffs it and walks away, clearly waiting for me to bring out chicken broth or a watery meal instead. If I try to dilute broth into his water, he sniffs the weak aroma and refuses it. If I drop chicken pieces to the bottom of the water bowl, he has learned to delicately pluck the meat out with his teeth while barely swallowing any liquid.
If I stop wet food he stay without drinking water full day
He is completely healthy, active, and has normal energy, so I know this isn't a medical issue—it's purely a learned behavioral preference. However, I want to transition him back to drinking clean, plain water from a bowl like a normal dog so he doesn't rely 100% on liquid in his meals. Because he sick days he stays without water
