i saw a phishing scam, feeling unsure.

I’m feeling paranoid about whether I accidentally infected my MacBook after seeing a phishing/scam email, and I wanted some outside opinions.

I was checking emails on my MacBook and saw an obvious phishing email that looked like one of those “claim your reward” scams. The main thing that’s bothering me is that the email had a large image/button (“CLAIM YOUR REWARD”) and now my brain keeps making me question whether I accidentally clicked it without realizing.

Here’s why I’m confused:

  • I’m mostly sure I DIDN’T click anything
  • I don’t remember any browser opening
  • I don’t remember downloads starting
  • I checked the Downloads folder and nothing was there
  • No weird popups or prompts appeared
  • The MacBook seems completely normal

The only thing is that I panicked afterward and cleared browser history, so now I can’t verify whether a page opened or not, which is making me overthink more.

From a technical standpoint:

  • If this was just a generic phishing/spam email, would simply viewing it realistically infect a modern Mac?
  • Wouldn’t most of these mass phishing campaigns mainly be trying to steal credentials rather than silently infect macOS?
  • If malware actually installed, wouldn’t there usually be signs like downloads, permission prompts, apps, extensions, etc.?

I know anxiety can make people doubt their memory, so I’m trying to separate actual risk from paranoia here. Looking for honest technical opinions.

Unsure if phishing link was clicked or not.

I was just viewing emails last night, then i found a few phishing emails i had no idea of
sure nmn ako na wala akong pinindot na link whatsoever, pero theres this feeling of uncertainty na what if napindot ko yung link na diko lang napansin.

is it possible ba na to get your device infected or accounts hacked with just opening a bad link?

I’m exhausted from being afraid of a hacking incident from 4 years ago

I honestly just need to vent because this has been eating at me for years and I feel like I can’t fully move on from it.

Around 4 years ago when I was about 14, I downloaded a fake cheat client that was probably malware. I was really clueless about cybersecurity back then and didn’t understand how dangerous that stuff could be. After running it, my Discord started acting weird. I kept getting logged out constantly, someone bought Nitro on my account, and my username was changed. Luckily the Nitro purchase got refunded, but the whole thing completely shattered my sense of safety online.

The part that really gets to me is that I didn’t fully understand what was happening at the time. I didn’t know what a token stealer was, didn’t know what a RAT was, didn’t know how malware even worked. So I kind of just… let it exist for a while because I didn’t know better. Eventually I reinstalled Discord and later fully reset the family PC after getting another virus from pirating games. But ever since then I’ve had this constant fear that maybe something worse happened during that time and I just never realized it.

I keep replaying the entire situation in my head:
What if it wasn’t just a Discord stealer?
What if it was a RAT?
What if they accessed personal stuff?
What if they saw family photos or private information?
What if passwords were stolen?
What if I missed warning signs?
What if there was damage I never found out about?

What makes it worse is that it was a shared family computer, so the guilt feels 10x heavier. I keep feeling like if anything ever happened because of it, it would be my fault. Even though logically I know I was literally a kid who didn’t understand this stuff, emotionally I still feel responsible for every possible “what if.”

I also remember weird things over the years that keep feeding the anxiety. At one point Google Password Manager said some of my passwords were compromised, even after I had already reset my PC. I had old Steam weirdness before too where my profile name got changed randomly once. I remember getting login code emails sometimes from other countries. Every time I remember one of these things, my brain treats it like “new evidence” that something horrible secretly happened, even if nothing bad actually came from it.

And the thing is… nothing major HAS happened. That’s what’s frustrating. It’s been 4 years. My accounts are still mine. I’ve changed passwords. I reset devices. There’s been no blackmail that i know of, no huge account takeovers, no obvious ongoing compromise. But my brain still acts like danger is hiding somewhere in the past waiting to suddenly reveal itself.

I’ve spent so much time digging through old emails, checking security history, reading Reddit posts about malware and hacking, comparing stories, trying to get certainty about what happened. But I think all it’s done is make me more paranoid and hyperaware. Sometimes I even get dreams about being hacked again.

And honestly I think part of why this sticks with me so much is because now that I’m older and understand cybersecurity more, looking back at my younger self is terrifying. Back then I didn’t fully understand what malware could do. Now I do, and my brain keeps projecting worst-case scenarios onto the past.

I don’t even know what I’m looking for anymore. Reassurance maybe. Or just people who understand this kind of anxiety. I know a lot of people got malware as teenagers and moved on, but for some reason my brain latched onto this experience really hard and turned it into this huge unresolved fear that I still carry around years later.

I’m honestly just tired of feeling scared of something that happened so long ago.

Got hacked at 14 and I still think about it constantly

Okay so i just wanna dump this all out because its been killing me.
4 years ago i was hacked on discord. by downloading a cheat client that was sent by probably a bot or something automated. Dumb 14 years old me was super clueless of everything and
decided to download it and run it like an absolute idiot.

It had my discord logout after every time i log in on my account and
even if i had reset my password it would just be logged out the next day.

Now i dont know if this is a RAT or just a info-stealer. but i suspect it would have had a keylogger or some sort. i didnt have any security alerts from google or my gmail account to have been hacked. or i just didnt see it. i also didnt get blackmailed of some sort. but what the malware did was is they bought 88$ worth of discord nitro. which i got refunded luckily. and the hacker changed my discord username also.

and it stopped getting logged out after i reinstalled discord completely (i think it did)
as i was very clueless that time not knowing any types of malware. i let it be for one month.
then i was just pirating some games then i got another virus then that was the time i did a usb reset on my pc. now im making this post because this happened 4 years ago and yet, im still getting super worried about it. because its the feeling that i let a malware run in my PC for a month. also worried because what if they went and looked at my google photos with personal pictures and photos of my family.

I have this feeling that. all the blame is on me if it ever was compromised to the hacker.
ive been trying to dig every sort of evidence i could find like going through emails, history, etc..
i really just want to know if this is something super serious ( Something like that).

This has been tough on me as i always think of what ifs and im a very paranoid person
and taking in alot now that i know more knowledge about this type's of stuff and looking back to the past is scary. it was a family PC so yea.

Back to the hacking part. i just want to summarize everything. i have changed my passwords (well most of it because some of the accounts are inactive) but it was a family pc sooo there was quite alot of passwords there. ive seen other reddit posts saying that it might have injected itself to the discord client? i think it was because when i reinstalled discord the logging out was gone. or the hacker stopped because it got its nitro. ive been getting dreams about getting hacked and its getting more out of hand.

Just really want some type of reassurance i could get, or some knowledge.
Thank you.

Got hacked at 14 and I still think about it constantly

I’ve been dealing with anxiety over something that happened 4 years ago and it still keeps bothering me badly.

When I was around 14, I got hacked on Discord after downloading a fake cheat client someone sent me. Looking back now, it was obviously stupid, but at the time I genuinely had no understanding of malware or cybersecurity stuff.

After running it, my Discord account would constantly get logged out, even after changing my password. The hacker ended up buying around $88 worth of Nitro on my account and changed my username too. Thankfully I got the charges refunded.

What scares me is that I let whatever malware that was stay on the family PC for around a month before eventually resetting the computer through a USB reinstall. During that time I really didn’t understand what was happening.

Ever since then, I’ve been obsessing over the “what ifs.” Like:

  • What if it was a RAT or keylogger?
  • What if they accessed family photos or personal stuff?
  • What if accounts were silently compromised and I never noticed?
  • What if I missed security alerts?

I’ve changed most passwords since then, and nothing major has happened in the 4 years after, but my brain keeps going back to it. I’ll randomly dig through old emails, search histories, account activity, trying to find “evidence” that something worse happened.

The hardest part is the guilt. I keep feeling like if anything ever was exposed, it would be completely my fault because I chose to run the file.

I’ve even started getting dreams about being hacked again. I know logically that if something catastrophic happened, I probably would’ve known by now after 4 years, but anxiety keeps making me think otherwise.

I guess I’m posting because I want to know if anyone else has dealt with this kind of long-term paranoia after a hacking/malware experience. How do you stop replaying it in your head years later? i also will take in knowledge about the malware if it is shared.

Was this likely just a Discord info-stealer or something deeper?

About 4 years ago, when I was around 14, I downloaded a fake Discord cheat/skinchanger without understanding the risks. After that, for around 3–4 days, every time I opened my PC and launched Discord, my account would already be logged out. Then eventually someone accessed my account, bought around $80 worth of Nitro, and changed my Discord name to something like ‘ony.’

Since then I’ve been worried about how deep the compromise could have gone. I understand that Discord tokens, browser passwords, cookies, or saved sessions may have been stolen, and I’ve mostly accepted that possibility. What still worries me is whether this sounds like the kind of malware that could have accessed my Google account or looked through things like Google Photos and personal family pictures.

I haven’t noticed any major suspicious activity in the years since, no ongoing account takeovers, extortion, leaked photos, strange contacts, or obvious signs of remote control, but the uncertainty still bothers me because I don’t know what these kinds of malware typically did back then.

Based on the behavior (Discord logouts followed by Nitro purchases), does this sound more like a common Discord/browser info-stealer from that time, or are there realistic signs that it could have been a deeper long-term compromise of my PC or cloud accounts?

Well i was hacked on discord 4 years ago, and what happened was, everytime i open or log on discord everytime i open my pc everyday, my account would have been logged out.
This happened after dumb 14 years old me downloaded a "Cheat/skinchanger" clueless of the
dangers that it might give

So my account would be logged out every morning that i would go on my pc this happened
for 3-4 days then the hacker struck and bought 80 dollars worth of nitro on my account and
changed my name into something (it was "ony" if i could remember).
Until now ive still been paranoid of what was affected. if it was my discord login and my browser passwords i wouldnt mind. but if it went look deeper thats where im getting worried about.

It has been hard on me because i am a very paranoid person.
I also may have short term memory because i am not completely sure of
what i actually downloaded or how i got hacked as it was 4 years ago already.
