Lately Waze is very wedded to the original route

iOS user. I have noticed recently that Waze doesn’t reroute as quickly as it used to. Instead, it’s first instinct is to get you back to the current route you’ve deviated from, even if it might be 10/15 minutes longer than the best way from your current position.

I had a perfect example the other morning. The route was set to go all the way up the M2 towards the M25…, but the M20 was looking like a better option. So I took the A249 link road. (crucially I didn’t change the route before I took it.)

Initially, as you can see, it told me to go all the way round the roundabout and back onto the M2… and then even more absurdly to do a U-turn once I was on the A249 properly… and you can see the time getting longer…

Well, after ignoring these two instructions (and possibly a third direction to turn around) it finally rerouted to A249 then M20 Northbound and the ETA improved by at least 10 minutes, if not 15, sorry no screenshot).

So I’m thinking this is all well and good if it’s an area that you know and you can choose to go the “wrong way” until it does the right thing. But if I didn’t know the area I’d be slavishly following the satnav and doing a longer journey unnecessarily.

So I don’t understand why the logic isn’t always simply “what is the fastest way of getting there from here”?

Waze iOS in UK recently updated to AI reporting

How is it going for everyone? I reported a couple of vehicles on shoulder by voice with no problem.

But then I tried to report "right lane blocked" and then it asked me twice in a row which lane was blocked, I said "right" both times and it wasn't accepting it so I had to give up.

What happened to single fares being half returns?

Tomorrow I'll be making a return journey from Luton Airport Parkway to St. Pancras. With a railcard discount this cost me £16.25 for an Offpeak Day Return. So £8.13 each way.

My partner will be joining me for the return journey. It would only allow me to purchase an Anytime Day Single and with the railcard discount this is £13.00.

A bit ridiculous if you ask me.

Wonderwall - Football Anthem! Oasis, Englands national band.

As Wonderwall is played twice in a row in the stadium with the players singing it back to the fans I've just got to say: Tune Noel... Imagine writing songs that bring the nation together in celebration of a football win, In the past to soundtrack a football defeat.... and also that bring the nation together in times of great grief.
But even more, being the band and back catalogue that we naturally turn to in those moments.

Theres 100% going to be another Oasis song over the credits of Englands final game too... whether thats the final or not. Wonderwall or maybe Live Forever if we win the final... I'd love sad song, but probably too niche for TV if we don't make it.

Can you see your bonnet?

I was gonna put it in r/drivingUK, but you can’t post polls there and I had the initial conversation here anyway… so here goes. When you drive, in your normal driving position, can you see your bonnet or not? I never have.

Rules are made to be broken?

Sorry… no dashcam. I’ve come to relate a scarcely believable incident that happened on the M20 driving home today. Which was made funnier by the amount of “can I pass on the left?” type posts on this sub and and a test fail on the learner sub in a similar, but way less extreme scenario that I commented on yesterday morning.

So I was driving South at 70mph on the M20 around Ashford, at 7pm, in the middle lane because I had just finished passing a HGV in lane one and in front of me also in the middle lane is a drop side van going around 65mph. The motorway is pretty clear of cars in front and fortunately no faster cars are approaching in lane three in the short term.

I was just about to indicate to move out to lane three myself to overtake when the van suddenly slows sharply and moves or swerves even out to lane three!

My immediate reaction is to brake and scan the road ahead for whatever has caused this bizarre manoeuvre, expecting to see some sort of debris, but there is nothing. So next as I’m slowing down through 40mph/30mph and the van is slowing to around 20mph if not less I’d say... I’m considering my options: Firstly, this van has just done something totally crazy, (moved to lane three and slowed right down) I’m thinking it could swerve back again.

Secondly, the HGV is now rapidly gaining on us in lane one, but to its immense credit it does also slow down. If it wasn’t there I would have moved to lane one for sure.

Thirdly, there is 70mph traffic approaching from behind now.

The van was now going pretty damn slow and pulled to the right of lane three, right wheels near the central reservation. They had done their crazy manoeuvre whilst there was a slip road off so no visible hard shoulder and my partner wondered if it was a foreign driver who had a mechanical issue and simply forgotten which side of the road they were supposed to slow down on.

So with all this going on and the van looking like it might come to a stop even… I undertook the van! And drove on, I didn’t have a lot of choice.

Looking in my mirrors I think at least one or two cars had a pretty unpleasant experience coming across this extremely slow drop side van in lane three and also undertook. It seemed to speed back up to maybe 40/50mph after only a few more seconds though and move back across.

I was pretty dumbfounded afterwards, never had anything quite like that in 20 odd years of driving. I have no idea what made him do what he did. The van had two occupants, I didn’t manage to make eye contact so I can’t add much more.

My sister in law has given birth today. My fiancé is going to see the baby, whilst I am going to do the school run. But my partner wants me to tell our child the baby hasn't been born yet so she can tell her herself later on and see the reaction.

Is that a normal thing? I feel like I'm not allowed to play any role in this great news and I've told my partner this is a big deal for me. It makes me feel like I'm not really part of the family for her. Plus no one wants to lie to their child. Obviously she wants to enjoy being an aunt and is annoyed that I'm so mad about it.
