Any recs of good cheap scifi greebles?

I'm starting a project of modular shipping container style buildings and while I've got a few odds and ends (electric bits from a remodel, plastic odds and ends that I liked the shape of and so on) I'm going to need a lot more. I'd prefer odds and ends from the hardware store like zip ties or drywall hangers as I'd rather save money for the actual minis I'd be using with this terrain.

Any thoughts?

Just finished my first campaign (Lich Lord) and what a blast!

There were a few scenarios that were hit and miss (a good number of the starting ones had variations of "there are some guys in the middle, guarding a treasure." that ended up with us taking them out easily and then just fighting each other for the treasure.) but when the scenarios hit, they really hit well. The house of Longreach, the Ghoul King and the final battle were all wild unpredictable fun.

Another great thing was just getting to craft terrain pieces that were specific enough I wouldn't make them otherwise, but will absolutely be saved for other games (the shipwrecks and nautical detritus from the battle on the frozen river especially)

Alex Karp as a sinister mastermind or academic with his head up his ass?

I just listened to the episodes and I got less of the sinister mastermind vibe and a lot more PHD brain, where because he's got a doctor in front of his name and has people skills, people assume he's smarter than them, and that he's smarter than them and just go along with nonsense like Defending The Shire rather than challenging his bullshit. I can only assume this is compounded with billionaire/CEO brain, in which one, intentionally or not gets surrounded by yes men that reinforce your ideas no matter what.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the dude seems to be a lot more Steve Jobs blithely assuming that being smart at one completely unrelated thing makes him an expert at everything, rather than a full doctor evil type.

Thoughts?

Has anyone started an English tutoring business out here?

Hi all,

I've done a smattering of tutoring work here and there over my first year but am likely getting quite a bit more tutoring work coming my way once the school year starts, so I would like to get a bit more serious about it, so have some questions about the business side of things (I was a teacher before moving here so I feel confident about the academic aspect.)

First, what's a reasonable rate to be charging? Something that would be in the happy zone between what folks are willing to pay and what's worth my time. I'd likely be reporting income via my auto entrepreneur number so a cut would get taken out in taxes. I'd likely have a scale of rates based on the amount of lesson prep I'd need to be doing (so lower for someone that just wants to practice chatting and higher for someone with specific goals like exams)

Second, any thoughts on self promotion? I'm likely to get some just falling into my lap but would like to be proactive as well. The town I'm in doesn't have anyone doing this and there seems to be some demand as tourism is a growing thing in the region and lots of places are advertising that they need English speakers, so I do think there's an opportunity if I'm proactive.

Third, for anyone that's done this before what's the financial picture like? I'm curious if anyone has managed to make tutoring/English classes in France a functioning business or is it something generally limited to side gig status.

Anyway, cheers for any insights you may have!

Working with bark

I went camping and found a bunch of bark chunks that I think will stack into really cool rock formations for the tabletop. I know the process in theory but just wanted to double check.

My inderstanding is:

1: oven to remove any nasties (fungus spores, insect eggs, remaining moisture, etc) but what temp and how long? Are fumes a consideration?

2: Shaping/gluing

3: sealing? Primer or Varnish?

4: paint as normal

Is that mostly right?

What do I need?

Hi all,

I'm winding down a frostgrave campaign and am looking at trying out stargrave for a change of pace in my painting. I've got mainly fantasy minis and terrain, so I'd likely be preparing everything from scratch (I'm aware I'm setting myself up for a project here.)

For frostgrave I would say the minimum setup to have enough for two players would be core book, soldiers box, wizard box, about 10 skeletons/zombies and a bunch of ruined walls. Anything more specific can be painted up/crafted between games.

For stargrave I'm thinking:

Book: just core for the moment

Crew minis: likely an official box but not positive. Are there better recs for large quantities of suitable scifi minis?

Enemies: don't know what to expect here. In frostgrave you can get pretty far with just random undead guys but what are you dealing with in the majority of Stargrave games? Alien monsters? Space pirates? Robots?

Terrain: again not really sure what to expect. Is this the scifi equivalent of ruined cities? Wilderness? The interior of spaceships? Ideally I'd craft enough generic terrain to fill a table rather than buy new.

What's up with the swimsuit rule?

Basically at a campground and got turned away from the pool due to having swim trunks instead of a speedo due to "cleanliness." I feel like the logic falls apart because there are people clearly spending their ENTIRE DAY walking around the dusty and hot campground in their swimsuits who are allowed into the pool with no issue at all. I don't mind (other than the inconvenience of having to buy one) but the logic is just not making sense to me.

Best way to prime and paint glass?

Hi all, I'm working on a giant cauldron terrain piece and I've got a little glass dessert pot that is going to be said cauldron. It's seeing eventual use in a Frostgrave scenario so the paint job needs some level of durability (at least for normal handling) any thoughts?

Help with job offer?

Hello all,

My family has gotten a job offer in Casablanca for 2500 euros/27000 MAD a month after taxes. I understand that's a high income bracket but would like to get a handle on lifestyle/savings potential. Some considerations we've got:

Family of 4, with two kids. School would be covered but what about extracurriculars/and other fun stuff? We've lived in countries where those were absolutely extortionate.

What might we be spending on housing/food/utilities and so on? I realize this varies wildly based on lifestyle but ballpark numbers would be helpful.

Only my wife would be working initially. I'd like to spend my time doing full time studies in French (at about a B1, looking to go up to B2). It looks like there are a number of possibilities for that but curious what programs would be recommended.

I would appreciate any insights you guys have!

For those in Europe, what's the best way to order minis from the UK that isn't Amazon?

From what I've seen the direct fees for shipping something to Europe from the UK is arbitrary and subject to fluctuating from a reasonable fee to more than the cost of the item.

I'm looking at getting into stargrave and would like to order a couple boxes of minis. Amazon has them but is also a giant evilcorp. Are there any European based importers that would have them?

What's the origin of the trope where a girl disguises herself as a boy to join the (typically blackpowder era British) army?

I feel like I've encountered this a lot in fiction/fantasy up to and including Terry Pratchett writing a parody of it in which an entire regiment including the commanding officer is revealed to be girls in disguise one by one. Other examples include the Thousand names series by Django Wexler, the Bloody Jack series by Meyer and I think at least one character in a Sharpe Novel. I know there were absolutely historical examples of women disguising themselves as men and going to war, but none of the examples that pop into my head are from the right time period or place (Antonio/Catalina de Erauso is probably the nearest, and that's a whole continent and several hundred years away)

My question is, was there a famous case or general trend of girls disguising themselves to join the British Army? Failing that, was there an original work of fiction that got the whole trope started?

Errors in texts and formatting after converting files?

Hi all, relatively new user here. Sorry if this has been asked before, but after adding a batch of pdfs and converting them via kindle, I noticed at least two of the books have picked up errors and wonky formatting the original doesn't have (one book deleted the letters FL every time they appear and both took the chapter list and spread it out over dozens of individual pages.) Anyone know what's up with this?

I've been seeing this guy on youtube (pretty sure he works for Teeling) keep popping up making cocktails like manhattans and sazeracs that I would consider as needing bourbon or rye, but subbing in Irish whiskey. Does this work? I keep going back and forth on if it would.
