Hemu Village, Xinjiang — this valley only got a proper road last year, still barely covered online
Wubaili Block, Altay City, Xinjiang - same square by daylight, quieter, and the European-style architecture actually stands out
Wubaili Block, Altay City, Xinjiang - locals dancing in the square after dark, felt more like Europe than China
Keketuohai Geopark, Xinjiang: Hiking 500 million years of Earth's history stacked in rock layers — lesser-known gem in the Altai region
This isn't a megadestination, which is exactly why we loved it. Keketuohai Geopark is basically a geologist's dream if you're already in the Xinjiang loop. Every rock layer tells a different story — we literally walked through geological epochs. The gorge has this turquoise river cutting through it, yurts dotting the ridges, and zero crowds. If you're doing the Altai loop from Kanas, this fits perfectly between larger stops.
Shenzhong Mountain 'Giant Bell', Keketuohai, Xinjiang - 365m granite dome that drew Western rock climbers here in the 2010s
Heavenly Lake (Tianshan Tianchi), Xinjiang, China - was here August 6th, currently exploring the far west of the country
Canton Tower, Guangzhou, China - waited 8 months living in the city before finally seeing it lit up at night
Terracotta Warriors, Xi'an, China - Pit 1, the main excavation housing thousands of life-sized soldiers
Houhai Bay, Hainan, China - the surfing heart of China, planned 2 days and stayed 6
Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park, Sanya, Hainan - jungle suspension bridge with peak views over the bay
Abuji Lake, Shangri-La, Yunnan, China - hiked to 4,220m through rain and fog to find this
Songzanlin Monastery, Shangri-La, Yunnan - the 'Little Potala Palace,' largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the province
Real life Avatar mountains - Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, China
Biggest flower market in Asia, apparently - Kunming, China
Chain climb up to this view in Hainan, China - not just beaches down there
We recently flew into China and travelled Hainan for 3 weeks with our power banks. By the time we were checking in for our flight to Guangzhou we were confident w could get through with our power banks. We were very wrong and power banks were confiscated.
That said we were already travelling with the power banks and couldn't leave them any where so our option was to throw them away or take our chances getting them through airport checks.
So just wanted to confirm no CCC rating bye bye power bank. That said we ended up replacing the confiscated power banks with Xiaomi power banks which are brilliant and are powerful enough to charge a 65 watt laptop.
The power banks were around 240rmb which is a steal compared to local prices for the exact same product in Australia.
