Narratively Powerful Duels

Fights, in good stories or in real life, are rarely constant attacks until someone is defeated. In all instances [stories, movies, street fights, professional fights, historical duels, etc], there are moments of intimidation, manoeuvring, negotiation, and the like, in which the combatants test each other, themselves, and try to gain a psychological or tactical advantage. This is an amazing part of conflicts, both narratively and tactically. RPGs regularly failed to produce this experience.

I've attempted to solve this for Pendragon via these house-rules, which I think have some really elegant design and are easily applicable/hackable to other games.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts?

Thanks!

Limiers Du Noir! - Dètective Noir Horror with Fracturing Psychés

Hi all! Pretty happy with this thing I made - it's for the One Page RPG 2026. The theme this year was "Fractured".

I wanted to make a Noir game about Fractured Psyches, given the theme.

I aimed to get some really elegant and thoughtful mechanics in there, and make sure that the Fracture mechanic helps manifest a feeling of change and despair in the characters. Please have a look, let me know what you think! Be great to hear from you if you play it!

  3. Colt M1911 .45 semi-automatic
  4. Winchester model 12 shotgun [Large; x2 damage up close [10 m]]
  5. Thompson .45 SMG, drum mag [Large; x2 damage OR attack all targets in a modest area]

PSA: MP Portal Spam

So! You can use the Hegemony Boon thing, with x2 if you have the Perk, to get ultimate time-control. You just have portals on the squares at the time Hegemony triggers, and you go back to whenever you like. Then you have portals on those squares again, and repeat.

Obviously this is pretty strong.

Do note, however, that if you end all the lives of all other players, you will immediately jump forward to Year 33 and face off against the Year 33 build of the person you just beat. So, be ready for that. I was not.

<3

Also you could probably optimise some kind of build that gives you the rerolls and such that you might need to +/- guarantee Hegemony on your first Boon, and the portals to take advantage of that.... but... I don't really want to do that.
