First rolls back from new MX are underexposed

Film scan day! First rolls through my new black MX. It seems to me to be metering too bright :(
In direct sun the meter wants me to stop way down at 1/1000 to achieve a proper exposure. However, most of my shots were underexposed by 1-2 stops. (pics 1-5)

I also picked up a Pentax AF200T flash. The flash photos shot with the black MX came out properly exposed (pics 6-8), using the settings listed on the flash unit (f8, 1/60) so it would appear the camera is working but the metering is off.

The ebay seller has been wonderful as they've already agreed to pay to have the camera sent back to them to inspect the quirky self-timer. I was waiting to finish my roll of film to send it off in the mail when my scans came in and revealed the dark exposures. Not sure if they can fix it or not, but the ebay is taking a personal responsibility to make it right which is great.

I was so impressed with the that I bought a silver MX from them. Among my justifications to make that purchase, I've decided to let the kids use the family k1000's and I get a couple of fully functional MX bodies to allow me to shoot film into my old age. Its been great having two bodies for my lenses to ride on. The 12-roll film stash came in the mail so the black MX is loaded with black and white while the silver is rocking some Kodak Gold 200.

Shots 9 and 10 were another roll on dad's old k1000 using the various lenses I've collected. I think 22/36 were keepers off that roll, so its not me being inept at metering...

At the end of 3 rolls I have 40+ shots I love and its been fun having a film kit to run alongside my digital gear. Hoping there is a simple resolution to the black MX, who's mirror stays up after firing a shot using the self-timer, only when a lens is on...

Thanks for reading. Happy to hear any advice, comments, camera chats

$5 garage sale Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 score

Picked up this Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 at a garage sale for $5 and finally got an adapter to test it out.

It’s a fun look. I’m excited to try it more. Not sure if it earns a permanent spot yet. My M42 —> k mount —> e mount adapter setup was a little sketchy and loosened while focusing, but it was a fun first walk with it.

Hard to complain for $5. I may sell it along with the body it came on…

Dad’s old K1000s sent me down a Pentax rabbit hole. Now here I am.

Found dad’s old pair of K1000s and decided to take them out and show the kids. I used one of them in high school photography class in the early 2000s, so there’s a lot of nostalgia here.

After getting a few K1000 test rolls back, I jumped on a super clean black MX to go with my lenses I’ve been collecting the last few months:
SMC Pentax-M 50mm f/1.4
SMC Pentax 35mm f/2 (K)
SMC Pentax 135mm f/2.5 (K)
SMC Pentax-M 100mm f/4 Macro
SMC Pentax-M★ 300mm f/4

Dad’s lenses:
Pentax-A 50mm f/2
Ricoh 50mm f/1.7

The M★ 300 showed up and immediately made me pull over for pelicans, so I’d say it’s earning its place already.

The good news is I have two kids and two K1000s, so obviously this is a totally reasonable long-term plan and not me justifying buying more 40 year old magic metal box.
Also shoutout to CameraKozou Japan on eBay. The MX buying experience was wild. Full video of the camera working with fresh seals for a fair price, shipped Japan to Oregon in under 3 days, packed like a gift, a nice little note, origami, and extra batteries. Really cool to see that level of care keeping these cameras alive.

Something pretty special about using old metal and glass that still works perfectly decades later. After years of digital the film scans stunned me. I’m really liking my photos and shooting more daily. This whole stash costs less than a Sony GM lens. lol AMA

Dad’s old k1000 test roll

So happy this camera is going strong! I remember being a small child and playing with it like a fidget toy. It was last used in my high school photography class in 2001. Crazy to think my kids might own and use it someday

Pentax SMC 100mm f4 Macro

Super happy with these!

I had to crop into my 33 megapixels pretty tight. He was gone by the time I returned with the 2x extender

Having fun with this lens. It was interesting to use in bring sunlight. Works very well, especially assisted with peaking

SMC Pentax 35mm f/2 (K) on Sony a7C II

Found dad’s old pair of K1000s and decided to bring them back to life. I ordered a few K-mount lenses and a PK-E adapter for my Sony.
-SMC Pentax 35mm f/2 (K) (this photo)
-SMC Pentax 135mm f/2.5 (K)
-SMC Pentax-M 100mm f/4 Macro
Dad’s original lenses:
-Pentax-A 50mm f/2
-Ricoh 50mm f/1.7
I used one of these K1000 bodies in high school photography class in the early 2000s, so it’s been fun practicing with the lenses digitally before burning through a bunch of film.
Test rolls are out for development and new light seals are on the way from Japan. Everything appears to be working on both cameras.

First shots with my new 135mm

I’m in love with this new to me, used lens. Big bokeh cannon. I didn’t have to back up as much as I thought I’d need to. Can’t wait to use it more.
