How do you guys actually find people to work with on a film project?

I'm 23M and have been getting more serious about making short films. I can write and direct decently, but whenever I have an idea that needs an editor, cinematographer or even another person who understands what I'm trying to make, I get stuck.

Most of my friends aren't really into filmmaking, and randomly messaging people on Instagram feels awkward because I don't know whether they're actually interested in collaborating or just posting their work.

For people who make independent/short films, how do you actually find your team? Is there a place where you regularly meet people for this?

Where do you meet people who are REALLY into films?

This might sound a little stupid but most people around me enjoy movies. Very few people actually want to sit for 2 hours and talk about why a scene worked or how it was shot or the screenplay editing etc

I've joined a couple online communities but most of the conversations are either very casual or just people posting movie recommendations

I'm just curious where people here actually found their film friends

Was it Reddit or Discord or college or film school or Instagram or local film clubs? Anything that actually worked for you?

Have you ever had a film idea that just died because you couldn't find the right people?

I'm curious if this happens to other people.

I have a few short-film ideas sitting in my notes, but some of them require people with skills I don't have — cinematography, sound, editing, actors, etc.

The weird part is that I know there are probably thousands of people interested in these things, but I have no idea where to actually find them.

I've tried looking through Instagram and some online communities, but it usually feels like shouting into a crowd.

Has anyone else dealt with this? What did you do?
