Pins & Pegs steam event

Steam has just launched the "Pins & pegs" event

"Pins and pegs are the stars of this fest, with discounts on everything from pinball to bowling and everything in-between."

Disclaimer - I actually have a game called Vaporwave pinball in the sale but I also wanted to shout about the event because there's tons of cool games in there!

I got commissioned to make PS1 art for a music video

WaterLvl is a music artist who makes these cool PS1 videos to accompany his music. I ended up gettig hired to make his third one, based on an Ancient asia concept and this is what I ended up with.
It was super fun to work and a bit awkward too, given the scale of it. Stuff that is up close is way easier for me to get my head around then distance vignettes.

Some Fun facts:

  • Took me about 6/7 days from start to finish
  • Several textures were from my own holiday snaps (the sand and the sky dome in particular)
  • The forest canopy is actually derieved from a fried chicken photo
  • The scene is vertex lit/baked from within Blender (Ive been developing this pipeline for my Spiritual sucessor to Ridgeracer type 4 game that I am working on!)
  • The shaders are Based off ToxiRetros (along with some minor modfications by me)
  • The stars are a particle effect that just last a really long time
  • The Ocean water is very not PS1 but in the interest of time + camera view, it didnt break the vibe so it stayed.

You can find WaterLvl's other videos here - Go show him some love

Psx lighting

Thought I'd share this test scene for "Rival racer", my PSX styled spiritual successor to Ridge racer type 4.

Shown above is a shader that takes vertex color (in this case, the red channel) and remap a gradient to it to get color. I did this because I want to have different times of day and I don't want to manage multiple sets of models to do so.

I should stress that I'm making what I consider a PS1.5 styled game - that's to say that I'm treating the PSX as a style rather than a limitation (kinda like what Shovel knight is to NES games) so this wouldn't be technically possible on the hardware but within my own goals,

& I'm ok with that.

My plan next is to get a block out track using my blender tools I've made and to get some more representative art going, so I can show a few folks at gamescom. Wish me luck!

(I got a mailing list if anyone wants to know when I got something playable, let me know)
