I have heard about asbestos backing. This part of property is 1930s but likely this has been redone several tjmes since then

A google search suggested hessian/ jute but when wetting it, it’s thick and tears like gaffer tape

Renovating a house we just bought, removed old aerial socket, some kind of board or mortar between the bricks and plaster.
Appears hard and pitted. Colours is slightly yellow. Can’t see fibres nor does it seem crumbly
Going to get it tested with a home kit (unless I should get a pro in?)
