Touring Scotland and visited Blair castle. Among the many old rifles they had were three flintlocks that had a softball sized brass spheres forward of the trigger. When asked what that was about the docent said the where very early air rifles, but could not explain anymore.

Anyone know what I was looking at and can explain or point to more information about how they would have worked?
