Does anyone feel like 2020 wasn’t that long ago?

I’m still surprised to think that it’s been nearly 6 years since covid. My mind still thinks it’s very recent.

Is there a song you associate with a city or location you’ve been to, if so, why?

For me, when I was walking in Le Marais, the song “True” by Spandau Ballet randomly que on my Spotify mix. Afterwards, I started to listen to it everywhere in the streets of Le Marais. Ever since then, I’ve associated that song with the feeling of discovering that place.

I had a creepy experience at a hostel in Strasbourg

I’m an Australian tourist and I was in Strasbourg for the first week of August. I had a very creepy encounter with someone at a hostel I was staying at and it’s been bothering me ever since I have left my trip.

I was outside in the courtyard in the hostel and a man was sitting across from me. I’m unsure to this day if he was staying at the hostel or not. He tried to communicate with me through Google translate as I don’t speak any French and he didn’t speak English

A different man tried to approach me asking for money in French in the courtyard. I didn’t speak any French and I was really confused. I looked at the guy sitting across from me, wondering if maybe he knew what he was saying. The guy sitting across me told the man to go away. He noticed I didn’t speak any French so he brought up Google translate on his phone and translated something along the lines of “he was just asking for money”

The guy then started to ask me questions, he asked where I was from. At first, I thought he was just being friendly.
Then he started asking me more questions, he wrote “can I talk to you for a moment?” over Google translate and showed me the translation. I was really confused. He then started pointing for me to go over into the corner with him. I refused. Then he wrote “Are you alone? on his phone and showed it to me.

After that, I immediately went back to my room. I saw that he was still outside smoking in the courtyard even late at night around 2am. At lunch time, I was reading a book in the courtyard and he came out into the courtyard and tried to sit next to me.

Since then, I have reported him to the staff. I’m writing this as I wasn’t able to identify him when I reported him to staff as I had reported it a day too late. If anyone has experienced something similar, please notify any staff member and please keep safe.

What are the origins of “coucou” and what does it really mean?

I was in France for a month and just left a couple of days ago. I was staying with friends. I’m in no way fluent in French and I’m at a beginner level.

I learnt the word “coucou” from my friend as she often said it to me. I’ve always been fascinated as to how this became another word for “hi”. Where did it originate from?

Another side note unrelated to the posts original question but I’m curious as to when it is appropriate to use it. I have read posts that it is generally only used for close friends and can be considered informal.

Can I still be let on airlines if I have a raspy voice and cough?

I’m currently on holiday returning back home.
I board my flight within 24 hours. I started getting those sore throat and I was hoping it would disappear. It’s lingered for more than 6 days. It’s mainly just coughing.

If I appear too sick, will they deny me entry to fly? If so, what do I do? I have travel and health insurance, if they decide to not allow me on the flight before I board, am I able to cover the flight with travel and health insurance?

I love and care about my partner but I don’t ever want to have children or get married. Should I split up sooner than later

I recently come back from travelling. I’ve realised I don’t really want to stay in the same spot I have been living my whole entire life. I really want to do something else with my career and travel more.

I suddenly realised that I don’t think I want to ever get married or have kids. My partner however really wants this eventually. At the beginning of my relationship, I thought it was what I really wanted. Everyone around me was beginning to settling down so I felt like I wanted to do that. Now that it’s coming towards the end of my holiday, I feel like my perspective on that lifestyle has changed.

I don’t know how to talk to him about it. I feel that I’m holding him down by still being in a relationship with me. I love him but I never want to take away the feeling that he could have the possibility of wanting children.

I can’t seem to pinpoint why I don’t want children or want to get married. I don’t know if maybe it’s just a certain stage of my life that I don’t want it. I always told myself if I ever have children, I would have them around 31. I’m already 25, I still feel like 6 years from now is too short of time.

Is this a standard experience in hostels?

Staying is Strasbourg for a few nights. The hostel I’m staying at is decent but the courtyard is open for anyone to come in. When I was sitting outside, I had a man that was sitting out in the courtyard but I’m unsure if he was even staying at the hostel or not. At first he seemed friendly like any other traveller, just asking where I was from. Then he came up to me and kept trying to pester for me to “talk with him” alone. I just instantly left the situation and went back to my room. Then when I came back out to the courtyard the next day during the lunch time, the same guy came out into the courtyard and tried to sit next to me.

Anyone else experienced something similar?

Best indoor bouldering facilities

Really keen to try out indoor bouldering gyms around Paris. Would love to hear some recommendations for any great facilities and places to meet new people

I also need to note that I would also like to make sure the indoor bouldering gyms have venues with secure lockers for personal belongings.

Feeling depressed while travelling

I’m currently travelling around France as I have many friends here. The first week I have really enjoyed it. I’ve been to Paris and Marsielle and going to Strasbourg in a few days. I’ve really loved everything I’ve seen and all the people I have talked to and met.

The second week of being here has not been so great. I’ve travelled around by myself for the past few days in Paris as my friends are working. I found it harder to connect with people when I’m not hanging out with my friends or in a hostel group of travellers. I’m hoping that this is just a temporary feeling.

I’m going on a trip that will potentially effect my relationship with work

I’m going to France for month. I work as a casual worker. I’ve worked at this place for nearly a year now. I’ve let higher management know that I will be unavailable for when I go overseas. The phone call I had made it appear that there was no issues, I was still receiving shifts for the coming weeks before my availability even after I had told them I was going. The only thing is, I know that things will change. I know that it’s harder for me, after I’ve been away for month, to still remain on the roster.

I don’t particularly want to be in this job long term. I’m applying for more jobs and hoping to find something for when I come back. I’m worried about coming back from home and finding that I’m unemployed for a while with little money to survive on.

I’m mainly worried about how long it will take for me to find a stable job after I come back and how to support myself.

Employees advising me to not disclose the price of tote bags we sell. Is this considered illegal?

I work in Retail, it’s a clothing store. If we sell a number of totes and socks at the store, it is contributed to our KPI targets. This is usually said at the counter before they purchase the items. We currently don’t have a manager in our store. A casual employee on the same reward rate as me, advise me to sell tote bags to people at the counter and to not mention the price of tote bags. They also advised me to say “grab” instead of “purchase”.

I’m skeptical about this process, as I believe under ACCC, it is advised for employees to always disclose the true price of every product.

Thoughts on TVS Smartwing

I’m planning on booking a trip to Prague from Charles De Gaulle airport. I’m avoiding transavia as I have read bad reviews.

I believe smartwing is also a budget airline with the same issues. I can’t see many reviews about them.
What’s everyone’s experiences flying with this airline?

Trusted websites to book Versailles tickets

Hey everyone,

I recently booked tickets to the louvre. I’m trying to find tickets to Versailles from the offical website. The offical website I find really confusing. Are there any tickets available for full access to Versailles? I can only see “passport” option with it being available from 3pm onwards

If someone could provide links to any tickets for full access to the palace and gardens that would be great

Does HostelWorld advertise rooms that are unavailable?

Currently booking places to stay. I found HostelWorld has a great selection but I am unsure if these rooms are actually still available. My biggest concern is the policy about refundable bookings and having to pay at the counter.

It is hard to find hostels direct websites that aren’t through third party sites. What are the best ways to find that hostels are available?

Question about booking.com policy for “pay at property”

I’m new to travelling. I’m looking for accommodation that is refundable. My only issue is that it says that I have to pay up front at the desk.

If you reserve a spot, is it promised that your spot will still be there when you arrive?

I’ve also just opened up a wise account. My only issue is that the physical card has not come yet. When I’m doing purchases of bookings online in AUD, will this affect it when I need to pay up front? Would wise be the most suitable choice when booking accommodation rather than your normal banking’s Visa card?

Attestion d’accueil health insurance

I’m visiting my friends in Paris for a month. I’m from Australia. I only found out about attenuation d’accueil. My friends are planning on processing everything

I’m slightly concerned however as there is a part in the attestion d’accueil that says I need 30,000 euros to be able to cover my stay for health insurance. I already have health and travel insurance, so I don’t understand why I would need further. Does this only apply to non-EU citizens on visas?

Need some assistance

Is Europe still enjoyable despite high crowds in late July-August?

I’m going to Paris, Prague and Vienna. Not many destinations. It’s my first time travelling to Europe. I’m fully aware of there being crowds and potential for petty theft.

I’m slightly concerned that the crowds will make it less fun for me. I’m not bothered about lining up but I am worried that there won’t be enough space for me to be able to enjoy bike rides or walks around streets.

It’s my first time travelling and I wasn’t really aware of what big crowds actually looked like coming from Australia
