Community Rules Update

Hey all! The mod team wants to share a little update to our community rules.

As I've sure many of you have noticed, this sub has been gaining popularity (hurray!), but with that there's been an uptick in posts with sensationalized and click-baity titles, or even, in some cases, titles with false information.

To combat this, we're enforcing a new rule that requires the titles of posts linking to online published information to match the title of the information being linked. This applies to news articles, scientific studies, videos etc. You are, of course, still free to express your opinions, ask questions, or spark discussion regarding the linked information in the post's body and comments, but the title itself must match the source.

So, for example, if I'm posting a link to a BBC article titled, "The Case for Abolishing the British Monarchy," then that must also be the title of my Reddit post.

Please feel free to speak up if any clarification is required!

Our goal is for this sub to remain a place that fosters healthy discussions about anything regarding Oakland County, from politics and careers to lifestyle and leisure.

Thanks everyone! 🌳🌅

Anyone Catch the Stevens/El Sayed Debate Tonight?

And if so, what are your thoughts?

I was pleasantly surprised by the moderator and the fairness displayed by the network overall. I think Abdul absolutely crushed, but I'm curious to hear from others.

(All opinions are welcome. The mod team here doesn't remove comments or posts over differences of opinion.)

Y'all, I just got home from a 30hr Shift to Find Out My Dog Did Battle With a Skunk 🥲

This is genuinely just a vent/rant. And before anyone asks, no my dog was not alone for 30 hrs. My brother was watching him, but apparently he has the worst nose in the world because all he did was text me yesterday when he got to my apartment that it smelled funny, so he opened the windows. 😭

Cut to about two hours ago when I walked through my door and was absolutely assaulted by skunk smell. It's all over the couch, the bed, the carpet, the dog bed. I know he must've gotten sprayed and then immediately sprinted into the house and rolled around on the couch trying to get it off.

For reference, Jester, (my dog, named afterJester Lavorre of CR) has a dog door and access to a yard with a 7 foot fence at all times, so he must've been sprayed through the fence in the 2 hr window of time he was alone at the house. Anyway, I literally just wanted to get home, smoke a joint, and read my book before going to bed early because I literally have to be back at work in less than 12 hours, but now I'm spending hours de-skunking my home and my dog. And I know it'll be weeks before the smell is fully gone. 🫠

And I also just feel bad for the poor pup because skunk spray is literally an irritant and he had to have that shit on him for hours and hours. Ughhhhh.

Okay, rant over. Photo of the brave Skunkbane below.

Also, don't worry. I still have all the love in my heart for skunks and do not blame the little critter in the slightest.

AIPAC is using a black man's face to get a white woman elected so we can keep doing a genocide

"AIPAC spends millions of dollars to get senators elected. AIPAC spends millions of dollars to get senators elected so that they keep us doing the gcide. AIPAC is spending millions of dollars in Michigan to get a senator elected to make sure we keep doing the gcide.

AIPAC is using a Black man's face to get a white woman elected so that she keeps doing the gcide. AIPAC groups are putting out ads in Michigan and running them thousands of times that insinuate that Barack Obama endorsed Haley Stevens because one time she worked in his administration.

*(Video clip of an ad playing)*: 'Stevens, chief of staff for President Obama's auto rescue, saving over 200,000 Michigan jobs. Haley Stevens, she was a critical part of my team that helped the American auto industry come roaring back.'

That industry roared back so hard, by the way, that the United Auto Workers—who, you know, did the recovery—ended up endorsing Abdul El-Sayed for Senate. But that's besides the point.

AIPAC isn't the only PAC that Haley Stevens has in her bag. Haley Stevens has accepted money from Delta, Goldman Sachs, United Health Group, DTE, and SpaceX. Ask what Elon thinks about Black people, by the way.

And people are trying to act as though there's a serious conversation to be had about what Black people should choose in the state of Michigan. Anybody acting as though there's a serious conversation to be had about who Black people should choose in the state of Michigan is trying to lie to you.

Abdul El-Sayed served in Wayne County's Health Department trying to combat overdoses and making Narcan widely available. Wayne County is 36% Black. Abdul El-Sayed served in Detroit's Health Department spearheading a program giving thousands of free glasses to children. Detroit is 75% Black.

Anybody acting as though Haley Stevens is more reputable to the Black community is only doing so because she's the more moderate option. And also because they probably share a lot of the same donors, including AIPAC.

The United Auto Workers, while we're at it, sent the super PAC that's supporting Haley Stevens a cease and desist after it used the union's logo illegally. Because, oh yeah, the ones whom jobs that Haley worked to save endorsed her opponent because she quite clearly is not pro-union enough. I mean, how could you be with all of those corporate donations?

Herein lies the problem. Corporate PAC money and AIPAC money is becoming more and more unpopular. It's becoming that way because everyone's beginning to realize that the reason why this great American powerful government can't do any transformative change is cause everything has to go past the board of fking billionaires first.

If those billionaires are in the healthcare industry, you're not finding Medicare for All happening cause it would put them out of business. If those donors are landlords, you're not seeing reparations or affordable housing that's actually quality being prioritized.

So with fascist oligarchs taking more and more of our economy, leaving less and less for normal people, buying off more and more politicians, and candidates like Haley Stevens embodying all of that corruption, our Black political centers have this to say about it. Leaders we've entrusted with power seem to be just giving insight into what I've seen and yes she's always been quirky... able to mention that, you know, this white woman was at a Black church before and went to NAACP events and I don't really know if Abdul's done the same or what both campaigns are doing right now, but, you know, just giving my take on it. Or in less words: equivocating.

So let me not equivocate real quick. There is a subset of the Democratic party, whether it's staffers or consultants, that still want to ride the coattails of name recognition at all costs. Don't worry about the policies or the background of the person, just know that you like Obama, right? Then vote for the person who's who Obama said before. You see a lot more equivocation than you should because oftentimes the fire is in the house.

But if you're Black and in Michigan, you should be voting for Abdul El-Sayed. Not just because I interviewed him, but because when I did interview him, we talked about how our healthcare system incentivizes racial discrimination at the point of service because private health insurance doesn't reimburse Black people at the same rate as government programs do. Why? Cause they can turn a profit that way.

So until she provides me a solution that isn't just tinkering around the edges and what these corporations say is acceptable to find the middle ground between the half measure... but no equivocation on our gcide. The proportion of Black votes she should get should be lower than the accuracy of this blaccent that she did or some shi-

*(Video clip of Haley Stevens)*: 'And you better believe I'm gonna be doing one with a little bit of joy, a little bit of enthusiasm, a little bit of energy, and a little bit of sick it to 'em. Because that's the Michigan way!'"

SMOKE/FIRE/HAZE MEGATHREAD - Day 2

Link to first post. The post remains open.

To keep the sub from being overrun with posts about the wildfires its results, please put all your pictures, information, questions, and discussions about it here.

The National Weather Service has extended the Air Quality Alert until tomorrow, Saturday. Air quality today is likely to remain at the levels of Very Unhealthy through Hazardous.

  • Try to avoid being outside and if you must try to wear a mask or respirator. It is recommended to not use masks for children under 2.
  • Indoors, if your HVAC system does not have MERV-13 or higher filters, additionally use an air cleaner if possible.
  • Try to avoid things that will make your inside air quality worse, like burning candles, using gas stoves more than necessary, smoking (sorry, smokers), and using aerosol products.

AirNow.gov shows the latest air quality data

MDHHS has an information page Your Health & WIldfire Smoke which includes a link to instructions on making a homemade air cleaner using a box fan and a filter.

Stay safe, fellow Michiganders.

Favorite Walking Trails in Oakland County?

Anyone wanna chime in with their favorite trails or nature spots around OC? I'm trying to find more places for outdoor weekend adventures.

And no need to mention Paint Creek, Clinton River, Bald Mountain, Stoney Creek etc. Those are great trails and recreation areas, but I'm wondering if anyone has a more hidden gem they'd like to share?
