Experiencing Insurmountable Job Expectations and Ready to Quit

I came out of retirement this year to work as a teacher for one more school year, hoping to save a little retirement nest egg. I also felt a little selfish for not teaching anymore.

Now that I’m back to work at a new school, I have discovered MORE reasons why people leave teaching. To try to do my job reasonably well, I am spending my weekends grading papers and lesson planning; I have no work-life balance; I have already gained 15 pounds in 2 months because I come hime so exhausted and feel like I no longer have time for gym or food preparation; my administration expects teachers to find and use their own resources - the school doesn’t provide books or online curriculum; I have already spent about $1,000 on my classroom buying posters, books, and folders for my students; administrators expect teachers to use various computer learning programs for students and expect teachers to teach the programs to their students but without adequate training leaving teachers to ask their colleagues for help learning the program(s) or ask their students for help with the program(s); I feel like the philosophy of my school is to let new teachers “sink or swim”; about 6 weeks into the school year I was told I must also complete a year-long course using my time during my school day and my personal time at home.

So, I am ready to burn out after being at this job less than 3 months. I realize I can’t do this job for 10
months!!!

I put in my 30-day notice that I’m quitting mid-year. My administration told me they were surprised. An administrator I know outside of this school workplace advised me to just “do the bare minimum” as I work out my notice.

Anyone else experience unrealistic time demands at work? Piles of work being loaded on them by their bosses? or lack of adequate training to do their job reasonably well?

Always being asked where I am by husband

I’m a 60 year old female married to 57 year old male. When my husband is coming home from work he often calls me and asking me where I am and what I’m doing. I had already told him in the morning where I was planning to drive to for work that day, but it seems that when he called me I sounded different (ie. too happy). I feel he is jealous of my job and the freedom and flexibility I have in it. Sometimes, my husband is not truthful in a similar circumstance - after work he calls me or I call him and he will say he’s coming home but he doesn’t come right home and goes to the casino for an hour or so instead. So, he has a double standard. My husband has been making more effort to come home after work and not go to the casino, but I feel he resents coming home. I don’t know how to male our home more exciting than the casino for him. He comes home and flops on the recliner and says he’s exhausted, starts watching tv and all night and interacts very little with me. Yesterday, when he asked me where I was and what I’d been doing I felt like he was picking a fight with me as part of his agenda being mad as an excuse to go to the casino and not come home. I also felt resentful that he’s checking on me and what I’m doing when he doesn’t make the effort to spend quality time with me, so I feel he acts entitled. When I obliged and told him where I was and what I was doing, he didn’t seem to believe me and wanted more details to the sequence of what I had been doing. This annoyed me and I felt in my gut like he must be tracking my whereabouts. I don’t find it cute or caring that he always asks me where I am. I find it controlling. What is a way I could assert myself to be treated better?
