quick abstract artsy project made for a school assignment w/Kdenlive

hey everyone, wanted to share this short abstract multimedia piece i created on kdenlive for a class project. the original one had a voiceover narrating poetry about the sea to tie the random imagery together (that's why it might feel a bit incoherent) but i am way too embarrassed by the sound of my own voice so i stripped it out for this upload and put a song over it instead. i feel like a lot of the context gets lost without the voice, but i wanted to share anyway lmao.

i'm coming back to kdenlive after its latest upload and i can say that i'm liking it WAY more than barely just last year. i hope the updates to come will be as good as the last one!

GIMP for professional work

Hello everyone! I'm a self taught graphic designer and visual artist who uses GIMP (and other open source) for a lot of my work, if not most. I wanted to put together a collection of for myself and others in the community. A lot of GIMP discussions get stuck in comparisons with other software, and too often people end up focusing on complaints instead of actually learning how to use it properly and getting the most out of it, so I figured the first step is to gather some useful information in one place.

I tried separating them by categories, but most of them are very versatile and you'll find tutorials for a lot of stuff on their channels. Most of them also have tuts for other softwares, like Inkscape. It's mostly based on what do I use them for.

This is a work in progress, and all kinds of contributions are welcome. Please share any info, resources, or creators you think might be useful!

Advice on how to read to children?

Hey everyone! I run a voluntary book club at my neighborhood’s public library, and a friend of mine who’s a teacher basically asked us to go read to the kids in his classes. I said yes, and I love the idea, but I actually just realized that I’m... awful with children? How the hell do you even read to a kid? We’re going to be able to pick which classes we read to, so I can choose from kindergarten to older kids, but I literally feel so awkward around all of them lmao.

I know that the whole deal with little kids it's to like, make the voices and all. But honestly, I don't really have any children books on me so I can either pick something on my own and try to prepare ahead of time, or take something from the school library.

I'm thinking about picking some book with light horror stories (age appropiate of course) and read that to some of the older classes. At least, when I was a kid, I remember liking that a lot lmao

Honestly, I have no idea what I’m doing, so any advice would be really appreciated 😭

edit to add: To clarify, this is just an open event to celebrate Book Day organized by the school to get families and community to read to the kids. I was just wanted to tiptoe into it and do something fun for them because I like reading and, I like to see kids enjoying reading as much as I did once, so yeah. I promise the professional librarians are safe from me lol

Calzado de cuero?

Hola gente!

Graciasss!

Wavelet decompose / frequency separation

Anyone got good tutorials or resources for properly learning wavelet decomposition / frequency separation in GIMP? I know they’re not exactly the same thing, but I’m trying to understand both better and when to use each (my main goal is to be able to use it for people portraits for skin retouching and product photography). Most stuff I find is either super outdated or I can't really get it (there are some good text tutorials, but yeah I'm more of a visual learner lol)

I gave it a go yesterday following Pat David tutorial, but honestly my picture just looked like a badly 2000's photoshoped/airbrushed image of someone lol

Hello! I was wondering if there is a way to 'mute' one of my mutuals so they can't see my posts, kind of like the Instagram function? I don't want to make a private post, but to 'make it private' to this one person. Is this possible somehow?

Hello everyone!

I was wondering if anyone had any input or ideas on how to achieve this "stamp border" effect. By that I mean the shape of a postal stamp or the cutout / dotted / punched border (see the second example), as if in the real deal with paper or stuff that's "ready to cut".

I figured that I could try to do this on Inkscape (create the shape there and overlap the image on it there, then go over GIMP to add final textures and stuff) but I'd like to try and get a similar effect on GIMP. What I'm looking to recreate *exactly* it's something like the last picture. Thank you!

edit: this problem is solved, u can check my comment, thanks all!
