Game Recommendations For A Retro Lan Party

Games must max out at DOS and PS1 (and that's pushing things).

So, my friends are broke and we're all kind of annoyed with modern gaming anyway, so we were talking about if we could get old computers and LAN game on them.

With that idea, I've got a Pi Zero W 1 and 2, and started building an image.

They ported Quake 1,2,3 and Warcraft 1,2 as well as Duke3D, so those are the obvious choices. I've got them working on the PiZW2 already, and I'm hoping I can squeeze decent performance out of the much cheaper first gen PiZW.

I have also started working on DOS games, so C&C Red Alert, Dune 2, Hexen, Strife, Descent,Doom ...

Now I'm getting into the weeds. Lasersquad was multiplayer, but in that way where you'd make a move and walk away.

I remember a mech game that was similar ... but can't put my finger on what it was.

Any group-playable game recommendations from ~1995 or earlier would be appreciated!

What were you and your friends playing in your basement!?

Final Burn Neo version conflicts

So, I have a 'complete' ROM set from previous retropie builds for NeoGeo, but they don't work, even with FBA 2012, I tried all 4 emulators with several 'compete' neo geo sets on the high seas, but none of them work either.

I get 'these ROMS do not work with THIS version' error, but it doesn't tell me what version it is, which doesn't matter because anywhere I know to download from doesn't version the ROMs.

Does anyone want to throw me some basic versioning knowledge?

I assume there's a way to know which versions of the emulators I have, and also a way/place to know which versions of the ROMs I'm getting, so I can try to match them up?

Is there a way to know, from the ROM files what version they are?

retropie rom version issues

I just installed the newest version of Retropie on a pie zero 2 W and can't get any NeoGeo Roms to run.

I have sets from 2012, I've downloaded 3 sets from the high seas, and all 4 emulators just spit them out.

The frustrating 'These roms don't work with THIS version' error, without telling me WHAT VERSION would be infuriating, if any of the roms were versioned anyway.

So, if someone could just give me a hint as to how these are labeled for search? It seems like the newer Retropie FBA versions don't like anything I'm finding, and I just don't know what to search for to find them. Surely somewhere there's a Version X of FBA matches Version X of ROM, but no one is versioning anything that I can find?!

How are people doing this?

Does anyone else film their stuff? 1:64 camera test for a mech fighting show!

I've been working on a city block for my robot fighting show where the action is done at 1:64th scale!

The general concept is to film it with old analog cameras, and pass it off as a 'found' pilot from the early 90s in the vein of something like Max Heardroom or Tek War. It's a big project, but I've been having a lot of fun creating the robots, cockpits, and of course the set which is a 1:64 scale city with buildings that are built to realistically come apart, like if cut through a wall, there will be pink insulation, wiring, etc ... super fun.
