LA couple (51/54) considering retiring to Ireland — tax/residency advice?

LA couple (51/54) considering retiring to Ireland — tax/residency advice?

My wife and I are 51/54, no kids, and have lived in Los Angeles for the past 27 years. We’re hoping to retire in about three years, and my wife is increasingly itching to get back to Ireland (Cork).

We’re both dual U.S./Irish citizens. At this point we’re trying to figure out what retirement might actually look like — full-time Ireland, splitting our time between Ireland and the U.S., etc. We haven’t yet seriously dug into the tax implications of becoming Irish tax residents.

My understanding is that Ireland generally considers you tax resident if you spend 183+ days there in a year, but there’s also the 280-day test over two consecutive years, so it’s not quite as simple as “stay under six months.”

Our tentative plan would be:

  • Sell our home in Los Angeles when we retire.
  • Buy a small apartment somewhere on the U.S. East Coast as our U.S. base.
  • Rent in Ireland initially and potentially buy there later.
  • Keep essentially all of our investments/assets in the U.S. — 401(k)s, traditional/Roth IRAs, HSA, taxable brokerage accounts, etc.
  • Potentially spend a significant portion of each year in Ireland.

What I’m particularly interested in is hearing from other dual U.S./Irish citizens who retired to Ireland after accumulating most or all of their assets in the U.S.

How did Irish tax residency affect your U.S. retirement accounts and brokerage investments? Were there any tax surprises you wish you had known about before establishing Irish residency? And did you ultimately decide to become full-time Irish residents or structure your time so that you remained U.S. tax residents?

We’ll obviously hire a professional who understands both U.S. and Irish taxation before making any decisions, but I’d love to hear from people who have actually gone through this.

Any advice, experiences, or things we should be researching now — three years before retirement — would be greatly appreciated.

Replacing my 30+ year old roof in Los Angeles — Malarkey vs. GAF advice?

I live in Los Angeles and am replacing the 30+ year old roof on my 930 sq. ft. home, which was built in 1920. Since I’m in Southern California, I need shingles that comply with California Energy Code requirements.

After doing some research (but knowing very little about roofing), I’m currently considering:

  • Malarkey Vista Cool
  • Malarkey Legacy Cool
  • GAF Timberline UHDZ
  • GAF Timberline HDZ

For those who have experience with these products, is one brand or line considered better in terms of quality, durability, appearance, or long-term performance? We plan to stay in this house for many years, so we want to make the right choice and invest in a roof that will last.

For color, we are considering:

  • Malarkey Willow Wood
  • GAF Weathered Wood

I’ve included a picture of the house for reference. It’s a 1920 Craftsman-style home with light green siding and white trim.

I’d really appreciate any advice from roofers, homeowners, or anyone who has gone through a similar replacement. Thanks in advance!

Asahi Athletic — Japan's answer to the Converse Chuck

Asahi Athletic from Japan — after recently picking up a pair of Asahi deck sneakers I had to treat myself to this pair. I wanted a well made pair of Chucks and these seemed to be exactly what I was looking for. For some reason Asahi isn't very well known in the US even though Moonstar (similar brand) seems to have a following here.

Just got this pair and I'm really impressed again — super comfortable, soft padded feel and everything about the materials feels high quality. What I find impressive is how these Japanese brands take a classic sneaker and actually improve on it, not just charge more for it. This shoe is going to get a lot of wear.

Trying to get my money back on the JJJJound 990v4 Mushroom — realistic?

Ordered the JJJJound x NB 990v4 Mushroom in December for $260 (size 10), ships in October, and I just don't want them anymore. Think I can realistically sell for what I paid once they arrive, or is the made-to-order format going to kill resale demand since everyone who wanted them already has a pair incoming?

Thinking about going a bit looser — TCB 50s or something else?

I’ve been wearing slim straight and tapered jeans for as long as I can remember and I’m finally curious about trying something with a bit more room. Currently rotating Boncoura ’66, Fullcount 1108 and 3sixteen CT-100x. All great but I want something different.

I’m 50, average height and weight. Not trying to go baggy, just… less fitted. Something that still looks put together without being the “dad trying to look young” thing.

TCB 50s have been on my radar for a while. The cut looks like it might be what I’m after but I’ve never tried anything in that territory so hard to know. Planning to get into Self Edge LA at some point to try some things on.

Has anyone made a similar switch from slimmer fits? Curious whether the TCB 50s work or if there’s something else worth trying on while I’m there. Open to other brands too.

Real McCoy Athletic Loopwheel tees — worth the hype?

Been deep into Japanese denim for a while and have a solid rotation of Kamakura Oxfords, but somehow Japanese tees were always a blind spot for me. Last Christmas I grabbed a few Bronson tees and came away happy — good weight, good value, no real complaints.

Then a friend was traveling in Japan and brought me back two Real McCoy Athletic Loopwheel tees (grey and navy), and I think I've found my new benchmark.

The difference in feel is immediately obvious. The loopwheel construction gives them a softness — substantial without being heavy. The fit was another pleasant surprise. There's a slight boxy silhouette but it's noticeably more tailored than the Bronson, which for me is exactly the balance I was looking for. Structured enough to wear tucked into chinos, relaxed enough to throw on with jeans.

Having both the grey and navy covers most of what I need from a tee.

Anyone else wearing loopwheel tees day to day? Curious how Real McCoy stacks up against the likes of Whitesville or Warehouse in this category.

Finally tried Asahi deck sneakers — way better than expected

I was looking for a pair of classic deck shoes and realized I hadn’t owned white sneakers in years. With a cruise coming up, I wanted something I could wear easily with both chinos and shorts.

Like most people here, I went down the research rabbit hole and kept seeing recommendations for Asahi deck sneakers. I ended up ordering a pair from a Japanese retailer, and all I can say is—wow.

They’re extremely comfortable, nothing like the Vans I wore growing up. The cushioning in the sole is excellent, the canvas uppers are soft right out of the box, and overall they just feel really well made. They also look even better in person than I expected.

I’m especially glad I went with white. I was originally leaning toward black, but white just feels right for warm weather and works better with everything I planned to pack.

For what it’s worth, the chinos in the photos are Tellason, which I’ve also been really happy with.

Anyway, just thought I’d share in case anyone else is considering them. I’m impressed so far.

Boldin vs ProjectionLab for a relatively simple ChubbyFIRE plan?

I’m sure this has been asked before, but I’d love input from anyone who has used both Boldin and ProjectionLab, especially those in a similar situation.

My wife and I are both 50-ish, no kids, living in Southern California. We own our home outright (no mortgage), both have W-2 income, no side hustles, no rental properties, and our investments are intentionally simple: low-cost index funds across 401(k)/Roth 401(k), Roth IRA, HSA, taxable brokerage, cash, and I Bonds.

We’re targeting retirement around January 2030, with a current net worth just under $4M.

What we’re looking for is software that helps with decision-making and long-term planning—things like:

  • relocating out of California
  • Roth conversion planning
  • withdrawal/tax strategy
  • general progress tracking / “are we still on track?”

ProjectionLab looks visually great and seems powerful, but I’ll admit I’m not especially tech-savvy, so it feels a little intimidating.

Boldin seems more established and perhaps more straightforward, though I’m less drawn to the interface.

One other note: we’re not looking for full-service advisory help. We already work with an hourly financial/tax professional and feel good about our overall plan. This is really about choosing the best DIY planning tool.

For those who’ve used one or both, what pushed you in one direction or the other? Any regrets?
