Vintage Wedding Dress Restoration - is it worth it/possible?

Hello! I’m looking for some advice!! I am getting married in June of 2027. I’m hoping to wear my mom’s old wedding dress, but I have a couple of concerns! Honestly, I’d REALLY just love and appreciate any and all advice that can be given! Admittedly, I feel incredibly in over my head with this!

  1. The bustle attachment has broken off. My mom is also worried that the fabric is old, not well stored, and isn’t going to be sturdy enough on my wedding day.
  2. I don’t think I’d adjust the height, but there is a potential for the back needing to be taken out some.
  3. Any guesses at all for how much something like this would cost? (Granted I don’t even know the “this” I’m referring to! Like I said — in over my head!) If this will cost more than buying a new dress, it might be worth it to not proceed. :(
  4. The big hurdle is size. I’m a solid 50lbs heavier than my mom was when she got married. Granted, I have been heavily dieting (and am doing really well!), but I’m still worried this just might not be possible. I was hoping to put this off until December, to see if it even is a possibility, but would that even give enough time?
  5. Going back to time… I feel like I need to be talking to a seamstress (or someone else???) now! Does anyone have any recommendations in the Indianapolis/Richmond/Dayton/Cincinnati/Columbus area? Generally, anywhere within a 2 hour drive of Dayton I’m willing to go to!

I know this is a LOT! So thank you if you actually read all of this! Thank you x2 if you have any helpful advice! Attaching pics so you can see why it’s worth the trouble!! :)

Did you have buyers remorse?

Hi! Question! I am someone who doesn’t like to spend a lot of money, and I’m curious how fellow frugal girlies handled their dress buying processes? I’m looking online at a lot of clearance/sale dresses, but I keep finding myself in positions of final sale — and as a plus size girl that’s not going to happen! I guess, I’m not looking for advice on where to go shopping, but how did you do it? I’m terrified of splurging but then I can’t enjoy my dress because I feel so guilty about it (very common thing I do!). (And for context, I’m struggling with even like $400 dresses 😭)

Fergus :(

Genuinely breaks my heart (as a proud dog mama) to see the turmoil they put him through. Granted, I have a high anxiety rescue, but I am just so sad for him. He has never known stability, and it’s so heartbreaking. In his life, he’s never been able to live in the same place for more than 2 years. I’ve moved with my dog, but we’re talking an hour — not plane rides or cross country road trips.

But even if you put that aside, the poor pup JUST had that MAJOR change, and now they’ve left him to go to America. It’s just devastating. I can’t imagine how confused he gets.

I have to wonder if he is nothing more than a therapy dog to Mary, whenever she finds it convenient. He’s 100% Matt’s dog, but it makes me sad to think about what Ferg probably feels. :(

Also, I know the argument is like “she doesn’t have to share everything about her personal life and dog and husband with us” which like yeah okay but also she overshares on EVERYTHING and ALWAYS has! So why not overshare on the shit we can relate to? Not saying you need to air your dirty laundry, but we can understand husband/dog issues. We can’t relate to your crazy ass country hopping hobbies.

Shopping timeline x weight loss timing

Hi! Im looking for advice on when I should begin my wedding dress shopping journey and any advice someone might have on (what seems to be at least) my unique experience!

I am getting married in June of 2027. In April of 2026, I got diagnosed with some health issues, and I’ve begun a health journey. Since April, in the last 2 months, I’ve lost 30 lbs. I’ve went from being a size 20, to a size 16. The truth is, I feel like this is just the beginning of my journey! I’m doing well, and for the sake of my health, I want to keep going. Now obviously, my current 230 lbs, isn’t where I want to be, and I won’t reach my goal weight by the time of my wedding.
BUT! I have no idea how to time this out.

At what point do I have to bite the bullet and go dress shopping? And what do I even do about tailoring? I don’t want to wait too last minute, but I also see no point in going sooner than later when my size will more than likely change again closer to the wedding. Last, my wedding budget is pretty low, so I can’t just tailor multiple times.

Thank you so much for any and all advice! This is the part of wedding planning I’m looking forward to the least. I have such an unhealthy relationship with my body, and I am really struggling at even the thought of shopping — adding these logistics make it a lot harder.
