PhD student looking for a short host near Zhejiang University

Hi guys, my name is Akio and I'm a PhD student in Physics Applied to Medicine and Biology at University of São Paulo Brazil, and I'm enrolled for a course in Zhejiang University from August 3 until August 15th and as a Brazilian we can stay up to a month in China visa free. The name of the course is Future of Human Health - Brain Machine Integration.

I read that couchsurfing/hosting is a bit of a grey area, and sometimes you have to register that you are hosting a person, and figured that it isn't easy like in other countries. I'm not sure this type of post is allowed here on this sub since I'm new to it, coming from another person's recommendation.

If anyone knows someone that could help me, I would be extremely grateful! Thanks in advance

GalaxyXR ROM update interception

Hi guys, I'm a dev for Smartglasses and XR, as probably some of you in this subreddit are too, and I'm interested in the galaxy XR stock ROM but couldn't find any on the web, like we easily find for Samsung phones and tablets.

The most common way of doing it is intercepting the server endpoint during the OTA update, but I don't have a galaxy XR myself. If anyone manages to get a copy of it, I would be very interested. Having a copy of it could help the community to port android XR cool features to other AR glasses like Xreal, Viture, Rayneo by using Android phones (bootloader unlocked) as the compute puck.

If you are interested in helping with this, please DM me! Thanks in advance

A Physicist and HeyCyan glasses dev review of the MemoMind Glasses - Driving mode included

A lot of reviews for the MemoMind glasses have been coming out, so I wanted to make a slightly different version than what has already been covered extensively by other reviewers and I am open to questions. I've been wearing them for two weeks, almost every day. I made several display brightness, outside viewer visibility at different angles, speaker sound at different distances, speaker sound spectrum, display size at 2 feet distance and comparison with A3 sheet of paper and also a driving mode test on the YouTube video, so check it out if you are interested in those real life tests, having in mind that I have a Beta Tester version and final results might differ, and I don't have perfect lab conditions.

TLDR: They have some kinks to iron out, as expected in a Beta Test, but the display, speaker combination and overall hardware are very promising once they enable devs to build apps for this glasses, but these are definitely my everyday glasses now and I do miss them when they are not with me and I'm out and about doing stuff, but at home I usually don't wear them much. I wouldn't say I absolutely love them, but they are close to that.

What I like about the glasses:

  • Being able to change the projection distance is really good, and I like it at 1m, but some friends preferred it at 3m and some at 5m. The displays height adjustment also help a lot with getting the full display in view, I personally set it at -1 or -2.
  • The way notifications pop and have a 3d emphasis against the rest of the content displayed is pretty neat too
  • I like being able to listen to music with them while working, having lunch or doing other activities.
  • The teleprompter is amazing! I used it to present my final startup pitch to investors and professors (post grad class, not a real startup I'm launching) and it keeps rolling down the text even if you don't exactly read word for word what is being shown, and also the timer displayed within the teleprompter helps keeping track of the time. (More details in the rest of the text)
  • Real time translation works great as translated subtitles for YouTube videos, and I used it to translate Chinese video reviews of the Rayneo GT Max glasses into English, since I don't understand anything in Chinese, and the delay of around 3-5 seconds in translated subtitles was enough to keep track while watching the video.
  • The displays are generally bright enough and give decent contrast against other things in view, although Auto Brightness could be one or two levels more.
  • The new Maps mini app is useful for driving and walking to places, but you have to select cycling mode for the best approximation to car driving.

What I feel like is missing or should be improved:

  • I miss having a camera a lot, maybe a modular camera like the Xreal Eye, so you don't always have it attached and don't get other people worried too much.
  • The charging mechanism is good because you can keep wearing it while charging, but I would have liked a slimmer magnetic connection.
  • Full color displays would be great for watching YouTube and remoting into my desktop for quick tasks, but these aren't available yet at a good price.
  • They need a smarter notification category filtering system, because having notifications enabled for WhatsApp and Spotify quickly flooded the notification area with many notifications of the same Spotify music name playing or "Whatsapp checking for new messages", so I had to manually disable "Whatsapp checking for new messages" in Notifications Category options in settings but the Media Control notification for whatever media is playing keeps flooding the notification area with Youtube video title every time I press the pause of play button and everytime the music switches to something else
  • A Ring like the Even G2's ring would be amazing, since having to take the phone out for most apps or the glasses button is quite limiting.

Issues with the style

Initially, I had asked for the round style/version of the glasses, but I received the rectangular version instead which was a bit sad. I then paired the app to the glasses and it showed the round style and it seems like my rectangular version is flashed believing to be round, so i guess they made a mistake somewhere in the Beta test production and I will probably have to reflash mine with the right version later.

Teleprompter

The teleprompter is really magical and super useful for giving presentations, but I had two issues with it. There is no language option in the teleprompter section, and I had to present my startup pitch in Portuguese and the glasses language being in English didn't recognize the Portuguese text while I was reading it, so I had to go into the memomind settings and change the language for the whole app into Portuguese and then the teleprompter started working well. This is an annoyance for bilingual speakers or people which have to present thinks which are not in their native language, as it's my case as a scientist. The other issues is that since sometimes similar text between close lines of text causes the teleprompter to jump a few more lines then it should, so you should definitely prep the text and rehearse it in the teleprompter mode one or two times to see if this won't happen and change the wording a bit on lines that are too close. Most people that I showed this, thought it was pretty useful, and it definitely is one of the best use cases for scientists/academics like me, who have to give presentations in meetings and lectures quite often.

Driving with them

You can use the new Maps mini app inside the MemoMind app and you have to select between walking or cycling, so I just select cycling because it gives almost the same path as driving with a car, so it works for me. They still need to polish it a bit more, since there is quite a delay (about 10-15 seconds) if you choose a different path from what it was expecting, where Google maps sees it quickly and shows you another route fast (around 5-8 seconds in my experience ). The top minimap is the most useful, but I wished it was zoomed out a bit more, but I can't complain because it was made for bicycles, and they don't go very fast, so I usually also leave the complete minimap at the bottom too, but I wished it was centered with your driving direction, as sometimes the arrow it going sideways or downwards on the complete minimap. Driving with them is good during the day, and I think if you are relatively familiar with where you are going, can replace Google maps for you. During the night I see quite significant amount of an astigmatism like effects on car headlights and regular street lights, so it can be quite distracting and not something I would recommend, but I do it anyway.

What my friends and colleagues thought about the glasses:

I went around showing to almost 20 people, including professors, PhD students and undergrad medical physics students my glasses, and everyone marveled at the displays and how sleek-looking the glasses are. Interestingly, some got eyestrain/nausea even with me setting different projection distances for them, but maybe I also had to adjust the projection height, although I have not experienced eyestrain and nausea while wearing them for many days. Almost everyone agreed they were very cool and where future is heading, but I don't feel like anyone of them had the intention of purchasing one later on, even though you could see how amazed they were by the glasses. My opinion is that the hardware is indeed amazing, but maybe something is missing for general people, although if you are here in this subreddit and considered the Even G2, these are probably the ones for you. I think what's missing are full color displays, apps and more use cases for the glasses, but this is something that MemoMind will probably fix the apps side of things soon by allowing devs more access to the glasses, but full color displays at and affordable price will take probably a few more years.

Another note is that a lot of people asked me if the glasses had cameras when I was showing them and you can see that they were visibly relieved upon knowing there was no camera. No one complained about not having a camera, which did surprise me a lot as I miss the camera.

Honestly, I wouldn't buy the Even G2 glasses because of the lack of speakers (even though they have the cool ring), since part of why I like using the MemoMind glasses is listening to music while doing other stuff and not having to wear earbuds. Feels much more natural. Once these have open developer SDK, I think many great apps and use cases will be possible. I'm working on porting Even Hub and Mentra apps for the MemoMind One glasses, and will share more details in the future when the proper developer access is granted and am also working on using android smartwatches to control them, like you would with the ring.

I'm open to questions and more tests if any would want additional details. English is not my first language and I didn't use AI to help write this, so some grammatical errors might be present.

Releases · FerSaiyan/Alternative-HeyCyan-App-and-SDK

Hi guys, it's been a while since the last release, because 1 had just too many things to do.

This new release added a better logs export for P2P sync issues, transcribing issues and local models runtime issues. For the P2P sync now there is a 45 seconds timeout when the syncing with the glasses fails, or when the users presses the stop sync button, which now shows two options, one to email me directly or share, and one to send the logs via the server, which also hit my email (fernandosaiyan10@gmail.com if you want to share manually or if the server endpoint doesn't work for some reason). The logs would be greatly appreciated since the P2P sync works everytime for me and works for other users, but some users keep getting errors and I am unsure how to reproduce them on my device. I have applied to submit the app to the Google PlayStore and they request at least 20 users using the app for 14 days, so if you are interested in helping me bring the app to the Google play store for more people to use it, please DM me with your email for me to appoint you as a beta tester.

I am also working on adding experimental support to bridge Mentra Apps and Even Hub apps to work on the MemoMind Glasses (display and audio) and on the HeyCyan glasses via audio notifications, all inside the Cyanbridge app, but it's not present on this release since it's very experimental.

About the reverse engineering, I have been using Ghidra to find the likely patch candidates and had selected a few that could possibly stop the Audio cue when taking pictures and recording and also disabling the white LED. Recently, thanks to u/DonJuanSr I have been able to find a firmware version for the Wifi processor, since most of my firmware copies were for the Bluetooth processor. I discovered that the white LED is handled on the Wifi processor and the audio cue is on the Bluetooth processor (which is the one activate when listening to music and calls). Since I only have one pair of HeyCyan glasses, I would need some help to send a patched version of the Wifi processor firmware that allows us to dump and manipulate the glasses filesystems more freely, so if you have more than one glasses and arent afraid of potentially bricking them, please let me know. Your help will help unlock these glasses for many many users.

Thanks for almost 1k users who have downloaded my app over GitHub 🥳🎉

Xreal Aura vs Gravity XR M1?

Hi guys, it's been a little while since my last post (my OG Nreal airs broke down and I was waiting on Aura), but as Google IO is around the corner with many hoping to get more information about Aura, I found a video just posted by u/SkarredGhost about a reference device using Gravity XR chip that has 75° FOV with 2.5k displays per eye. It looks like a VR headset mixed with sunglasses and seems to also work with DP alt similar to Xreal glasses. I think we might get 1440p displays on Aura since Chi had mentioned plans for 2.5k displays on a premium device by 2026 and we already know the Xreal Rog R1 is still 1080p.

It doesn't yet have a price since it's a reference design but we also don't have a price and release date for Aura yet.

Do you guys have any hopes for Aura developer kit this year? I'm quite excited for it and I managed to set up a sandwich PhD stay in China at the end of the year, so maybe I might be able to try it out and post a review here if I get a chance for it.

Hi guys, a few months back my Nreal Air glasses have broken down and I have been experimenting with HeyCyan display less glasses and even built a really cool app called CyanBridge for them, but I am very interested in display glasses as a next purchase. I would love to watch YouTube on my glasses again and I don't have much of an issue with a cable running down to a small powerbank on my pocket.

I wanted to know from people who have the X3 Pros how is YouTube on the glasses? I saw someone mentioning a lot of dropped frames and choppy video, but I don't know if more recent updates fixed it. I also saw a YouTube TV port on the community apps, but the GitHub repo for it only has one star, so I don't think many people are using it. Also, how big is the screen for watching YouTube on the glasses? At what distance would I have to hold my phone in front of my face to match the video size?
