Anyone have any recommendations for a dermatologist or an esthetician that is knowledgeable about Black skin, especially for people/women over 45?

Thanks in advance!

Hyperpigmentation and texture

I never had much of a skincare routine and looked fine until my late 40s. I used to spend a lot of time in the sun in my 20s with minimal protection. I tend to have sensitive skin and products like salicylic acid used to aggravate it. I had regular breakouts all over when I was younger but they are rare now. (The large area of redness is a port wine birthmark)

Currently I use the "Perfectly Clean" foaming cleanser by Estee Lauder, occasionally their "Advanced Night Repair" serum, and Cetaphil oil-free daily hydrating lotion with hyaluronic acid at bedtime. During the day I use No.7 "Restore & Renew" day cream SPF 30. At night I apply a little jojoba, castor and rosehip oils every other night or so. I also have a powdered exfoliating cleanser my mother gave me, Acure "Brightening Cleansing Power" that has rice powder, kale and broccoli in it. It says it's safe for every day but I've only used it 2 or 3 times a month.

I have started to get some fine lines around my mouth, between my eyes and on my forehead as well, but it's the splotchy color and enormous pores that bother me most. I don't know where to begin.

Distinct types of noir?

The umbrella of "film noir" seems to cover a variety of different kinds stories. I see police procedurals mixed in with the life histories of gangsters, mixed with multi-character heists and gumshoes solving mysteries, and bad women and dangerous obsession, and plain old criminally insane crime sprees thrown together in "best of lists". Is there any occasion where these, to me, distinct genres are separated from each other?

I say all of this because I finally sat down to watch He Walks By Night and a huge chunk of it is hanging out with various officers and investigators in the police department with a voice over dictating the action like a case file, as opposed to following the killer and probbing his inner motivation or personal associations. This is a police drama to me, with the only noir element being the criminal topic and chiraroscuro. I find I'm much more interested in the lives of criminals than the police department, but noir lists rarely separate them out. Is my desire to see that distinction made antithetical to a love of film noir?

(Sorry for the clunky writing! Hope my inquiry is clear enough for discussion. )

Movies about people behind the scenes

One of my favorite kinds of movies are "backstage musicals" about the lives of performers and the people who work backstage. Some of my favorites:

Singing In The Rain (1952)

All That Jazz (1979)

Gypsy (1962)

Chicago (2002)

42nd Street (1933)

But not just musicals. Any movie showing the drama of how the sausage gets made, like All The President's Men or even stuff like Margin Call and Glengarry Glen Ross.

Anyone else interested in this niche? Are there any that you enjoyed and could recommend?

Is STARZ worth subscribing to?

I saw a tile for a filmed version of a recent stage production of Amadeus. The 80s movie is one of my favorites so I'm really curious, but after the free 7-day trial is it worth the $12 a month to keep it for anything else?

I didn't get to go, but I passed by the park last week and noticed how people in the neighborhood seem to be enjoying it.

So my hair has been struggling for years. Never had a perm growing up and only had braids 4 or 5 times, just hot combed. It's always been fine and thick, but for the last 3-5 years it's been thinning and breaking. I went to the hairdresser for the first time in a dozen years to get a silk press and a trim 5 years ago, and it's been downhill since then. I think she applied too much heat and then at home, trying to hang on to the style, I damaged it more.

I need a trim but I'm afraid of going to a hairdresser again. At this point I fear I need to chop it all off. It doesn't look too terrible as I wear it in two strand twists (sometimes I blow it out first, but not always), but it isn't anywhere near what it was such a short time ago, especially my hairline around my face, the part I applied the heat to the most. Unfortunately with my big round cheeks, close cropped hair would NOT look good on me.

I'm concentrating on keeping it moisturized and being gentle and it seems to be getting stronger. I'm trying to get it to break less and grow a little longer before I get it done again. As the kids say "Am I cooked?"
