Successful Wash & Go Today

Today was a good hair day if I do say so myself

fresh trim & shape!

pic 1 & 2: hair today after trim & shape. pic 3: hair today before. pic 4: hair in April, probably after trim & shape (it looks a bit uneven cos we were trying to balance out a previous bad cut by someone else without losing too much length).

I’ve been wearing my hair out exclusively for 4 months now (in wash & go’s) and I love it here!! I was a bit worried about this trim because of the rhetoric of hair breaking if you leave it out especially in wash & go’s, and hygral fatigue from washing too much. But my lady says my hair is in great shape and she didn’t have to cut too much off! What differences —if any—do you notice visually?

We maintained me natural kinda heart shape fro. Natural who get a shape, what’s your experience of growing it out in that shape?

Freestyle cornrows

Just got some freestyle cornrows done and I’m very happy with the result, had a wash, steam, condition and trim all for £50 which I thought was more than reasonable.

What’s Best For My Hair?

I’ve been trying so many things on my hair for the past 10 years. Whenever I’m in between braids or twists I like to give my scalp a break. Whenever I were my natural fro out I usually shampoo, condition, and curl cream, and a gel. This time I use a leave in after washing, curl cream, hair grease, then gel, since my hair gets dry. The hair grease works well to keep in the moisture in but I can’t stand the white stuff whenever I apply the product and when it dries, I have residue that flings out of my hair. The best combo I did was, a curl cream, eco styler gel mixed with the shea moisture flaxseed, coconut and hibiscus styler gel. Pictured on the right, but again, the white residue and flakes is still there.

I would like limit the amount of products I put in my hair, but have something that seals in moisture and a stronger/heavier gel.

An apology to my hair.

So I know my ends were bad but I kept putting off going to the hairdresser. No other reason than laziness. Laziness got my hair looking like it did. I stopped wrapping or plaiting it before bed, left it out to the elements without a care for my ends. Only moisturised once a week on wash days. Skipped wash days and left it dry and crispy and had the nerve to slick that dry hair back with gel and holding spray. So I’m sorry hair for treating you so bad. Here is to a fresh start and a promise to trim you more regularly and take better care you.

How to protect hair when swimming regularly

So I’m going to start swimming regularly and I want to know what to do since I know chlorine can be very damaging to hair. I feel like the best thing I can do is wash my hair everytime I swim but that also feel quite damaging. What do I do?

Fine & thick back to school twists for my babies 🥹

These are 2 day old twists. I normally stretch their hair to make parting easier, but this time I just washed their old twists and then redid them while slightly damp. Left a few strands out for the boho look!

Any way to get my hair to be in the front of the face in an Afro?

Hello guys! I have very thick very curly hair that’s a little past my shoulders when blown out (upper back). I haven’t ever straightened it so I can’t give that metric. I really love how Afros look and was wondering if there was any way to have my natural hair be more in the front of my face when in its natural state. I’ve noticed that my hair tends to never be in front of the ears, which is gorgeous, but is not complementary with my narrow oval face shape. I’d want to wear it in a way that covers my ears and parts of my forehead and frames my face. I mean something to the effect of the images I’m showing. The last two photos are included to give a comparison to how my hair looks at the moment. The length and texture are different but I just wanted to show what I mean by not being in the front of the face. My texture is probably closest to the 2nd and 5th photos when in its natural state. I definitely have some of the curliest curls I’ve ever seen if that helps.

Can you tell I’m wearing a half wig with my natural hair?

This is my first time trying a half wig this short, and it looks really similar to my natural hair after a silk press. I just wanted to make sure everything looks right. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hair Advice

Hello everyone!

So recently after years of thinking my hair is low porosity I came to the conclusion (with some help of Reddit) that I may actually have very dry high porosity hair.Upon finding this out I think it’s time for a change of products and was hoping to come here and find some advice for easy, minimal product, low cost products.

This wash day I’ve recently tried a co-wash (Camille rose) for the first time as I thought that normal shampoos and clarifying shampoos were just further stripping my hair and making it frizzy. However, in my region that same co-wash is now quite expensive.
I saw an advert online for the KeraCare co-wash and was wondering if anyone with high porosity hair has tried or if there’s any other affordable alternatives.

I’ve also just finished a tub of the Camille Rose algae renew deep conditioner and was considering repurchasing but was wondering if this is a suitable option for high porosity hair.

Any other tips and help is welcome please 🙏😀

I wish this place had more knowledge on fine hair

I have posted my fine, type 4 virgin natural hair here several times asking for advice, and I’ve been hit with comments like "your hair has major heat damage," "girl, cut all that off and start over," and "it’s dead, I’d shave it if I were you."

The thing is, my hair isn’t dead or destroyed at all. My hair is extremely fine type 4 hair, so a lot of times our strands can look stringy, dull, or stiff. I even use natural methods for gray hair. I just want our community to get a better understanding of how fine hair works. Coming here for wash-and-go tricks and tips is really amazing, but it just sucks seeing people post about how heat-damaged my hair looks when I've never used heat.

First Time Wearing My Natural Hair To A Party | It Felt Nice

Talk about a last minute hairstyle under pressure 🫠🥴. I went to a sapphic 🏳️‍🌈 party and my hair went
well that night. It was my first time wearing it to an event like that and I proved to myself once again that I can wear Asha to a special occasion.

cream on gel wash n go

(4 different wash n gos)

I was wondering how i could add more moisture into my wash and go without sacrificing definition so I decided to add a cream on top of gel. I thought I would share just in case anyone else was wondering how it would turn out if they tried it. coming from a formerly gel only wash and go girlie

notes: cream first gave me volume but my hair would only last a day or so. I think the gel hitting my hair first gives my strand the ability to form the curl and then I just smooth the cream on top and finish everything with mousse for frizz.

low water to product ratio is very important I feel like water and cream creates more frizz.

there is a cast even with cream on top but its gone by day 3 and there is still a lot of definition

I have to clarify or else I will get build up :/

Planning on combing out my locs - love my coils!

Hi!

This would be the second time I am combing out my locs. I want to give my curls a real chance to thrive. Based on my curls, do you have any advice to how to maintain definition and keep them hydrated? Also should I wash my hair more often when it’s loose?

I appreciate any advice!

Is it bad for my hair if I prefer to wear it dry and unstretched instead of moisturized and stretched?

Last is after using leave in conditioner and doing a braid out overnight, and the first two are kind of just how it is when I fluff it out without using products or braiding it for about a week. I just enjoy it way more without doing much to it, but I often see advice to braid it as often as possible to keep the ends safe. But then other comments say that that's a myth. So, I guess I'm wondering if my hair looks healthy enough in the dry pics to continue doing that? Thanks!

i think i figured out why most of us struggle with moisture so much.

Ive tried for most of my haircare journey to figure out moisture, i mean its one of the main factors to length retention.

But- i think i figured it out.

Because of how coily most of our hair is, its going to be more porous naturally and higher porosity. it doesnt mean our hair is "naturally damaged". just more porous due to the nature of how our hair is structured.

So the answer to our moisture problems (assuming youre washing frequently and using good leave ins), is literally just protein, however you want to incorporate it; deep conditioners, sprays etc. its also impossible for your hair to not like protein because thats what its made up of.

You also dont need those super intensive protein treatments to incorporate protein in your routine.

Theres different types of protein so its great to experiment to see which one is best for you.

this epiphany seems so basic and very late but better late then never i guess lol.

i think theres a lot of us that arent recognizing the importance of protein. it reinforces your structure, allowing better moisture retention and strength in your hair. esp good when you have finer/medium strands too which a lot of us seem to have

there are def a lot of low porosity coily naturals i just dont think its as common as we think. More so medium.

that being said, if your protein and moisture is not balanced. dont expect any of your leave ins or products to work as intended.

thoughts?

edit:

porosity is NOT a permanent personality trait of your hair.

It describes how readily the hair fiber takes up and loses water, and that can vary with damage, weather, product buildup, chemical processing, heat, mechanical manipulation, and even which part of the strand you’re looking at.

And honestly, the biggest issue with the online porosity discourse is that people turned it into: low porosity = these products high porosity = those products medium porosity = left out?? when hair care isn't nearly that binary.

Someone can have relatively less porous, healthier sections and more damaged, more porous ends on the same head. A strand can also behave differently depending on its condition. So telling someone “you're low porosity, therefore you can't use protein” or “you're high porosity, therefore you need protein constantly” is WAY too simplistic.

And drying time alone absolutely cannot diagnose porosity. Five-day/long drying time could involve things like density, strand thickness, how much water/product is in the hair, the style it's in, environmental humidity, airflow, etc.

Imagine looking at someone's hair taking forever to dry and immediately diagnosing their cuticle structure ..😭.

my main point is that, your protein moisture balance is the main focus. its actually getting very clear why theres so much struggle on this sub as someone told me they get their protein from their DIET?? YALL PLEASEE

for the love of GOD LEAVE POROSITY ALONE!!
