INDOC Daily Schedule

What’s the daily schedule like for INDOC? What time would we typically start our day and when do the INDOC specific activities end? Is there an enforced lights out time and do we get any personal time at the end of the day?

How much of the required items in the MUG Guidance booklet are actually required?

Do I really have to bring exactly two and specifically white bath towels and ten white crew neck t-shirts? And bar soap? Do we need to have all this stuff when we arrive for INDOC or can it wait and we just buy it from Target or something once INDOC is over?
I’m flying in so this could all be a whole extra suitcase for me

Also, do I bother getting a haircut or just get the shave at INDOC?

Gai-Jin or Noble House first?

I got done reading Tai-Pan by James Clavell and want to continue the story of the Struan family. Seems like both Gai-Jin and Noble House do that but Noble House, although set in the 1960s, was written first while Gai-Jin, set closer to the conclusion of Tai-Pan, was written after that. So which one do I need to read first? Or does it not matter?

How long do new 3rd Mates sail for?

The mariner lifestyle seems so different from what having a “normal” career entails and probably requires a bit of sacrifice so I was wondering how long do new 3rd Mates even stay in this career or at least working on ships, especially deep-sea? I mean from what you’ve seen personally in your career or what the existing data shows if there is any. Like if a new 3M starts today, what are the odds that they’ll make a full career out of this? How many years would they likely sail for before deciding to just find a job onshore?

Restaurant recommendations for the specific cuisines

I’ll be moving to NYC for college in August but it’ll be my first time there so I’m arriving a few days earlier to explore the city a little bit. The diversity of food is one of the biggest reasons I’ve always wanted to come to New York so I’d really appreciate it if y’all could give me some recommendations for the following cuisines:

-Pakistani
-Malaysian (especially rendang)
-Uzbek (or Central Asian in general)
-Uyghur
-Caribbean
-Korean

My budget isn’t super big so I’d prefer places that are mid-range (although I can probably afford one or two meals at fancier places). Don’t have to be sit down service either. I just care about how the food tastes.

Thank you in advance!

When is the virtual orientation and how do we register for it?

Incoming graduate student for Fall

The MUG Guidance booklet that I got in the email says July 8th but there’s nothing on where to register for that

The checklist webpage that was sent in a different email says it’s actually on July 20th but when I click on the link there, I’m told that this event is only for Freshmen and Transfers.

So which one is it? Or do grad students not have an orientation at all?

Is it misogynistic if a gay man says he doesn’t want to be in a place with women?

I know it’s a weird question but I’ll try my best to explain why I’m asking this.

A few months ago, I was in Korea and staying at a guesthouse where people were in the habit of going out to bars and clubs as a group at night. One such night, there was another American guy, newly arrived, with us who was gay and he wanted to check out some gay bars and interact with the Korean gay community. I was amongst the people who were down to check out a new place so I tagged along and it was pretty fun.

After about only an hour though, the gay man with us said he was going to leave and when I asked him why, he said “There’s women here.” When I pointed out that there wasn’t that many and he could just not talk to them, he was like “No, I just don’t like going to places with women”. I even asked if the problem was there being *too many* women or just women in general, and he confirmed it was the latter. It kinda threw me off cause he had been getting along fine with the women in our group and guesthouse but I didn’t say anything.

I know it may seem obvious misogyny but the reason I’m asking about is cause I have heard gay men say some wild shit to women that didn’t really provoke much of a reaction from other people around. In college, I was once told that, since gay men are not romantically or sexually attracted to women, the same rules don’t apply to them that apply to straight men when it comes to behavior towards women

I’m neither a woman nor gay so I didn’t consider it any of my business but this incident has just had me thinking. What that guy did feels kind of weird and extreme even if he’s not attracted to women and I was just wondering if the “different standards” thing is actually true and whether this would be misogynistic under that standard as well?
