I need the Books for my kids.

Im looking for good books for my daughter that can help her develop strong moral principles, kindness, discipline, honestyand good habits from a young age.

I want books that are easy to understand, meaningful, and can positively shape her thinking and behavior over time. Story-based books with life lessons would be great.

Please recommend books that helped your children learn values, empathy, responsibility, and bsoem history books like rulers

i need books that will genuinely mess with my mind 🫠

i’m trying to get into reading more because i LOVE books that completely pull you in and leave you thinking about them afterward 😭 my favorite genres so far are psychological thrillers and dystopian stories, especially ones with crazy twists that make you rethink everything. so far i’ve read some of The Hunger Games books and The Housemaid and i need more books that are impossible to put down. any recommendations?

update: thank you all for the great recommendations!! it would take me a while to reply to everyone individually, so this was the easiest way lol. i added everyone’s recommendations to my list, and i’m truly grateful. i’ll try to get back to y’all once i finish each book and let y’all know what i thought 😄

Yesteryear - DNF or finish???

So this book has been hyped up really much on SOME, and I finally caved and started reading it... And so far I'm trying SO hard not to DNF it??? I'm about 40% in, and it just so far is very.... meh??? I don't like the main character and the story feels weird. Anyone had the same feeling going in, and ended up liking it, or should I by now just DNF it?? I'm in a little reading slump right now also, so reading is not high on my list these days, but I just want to know!

Need advice: any novel set in New England in the fall

For context, I work out of the country. I'm gone for long periods of time, typically in very underdeveloped and austere environments. I'm from New England and I daydream about the fall all the time while I'm in these very destitute places. Who has some good suggestions for a novel set in the autumn in New England? I don't even care what it's about. As long as the setting is part of the story. Help my mind wander back to the good old days. Novels set in the '80s and '90s would be even better, but I'll take anything.

What’s a simple Indian book that got you into reading?

Trying to build a regular reading habit recently and looking for Indian books that are easy to read but still really engaging 😅

Not necessarily looking for “masterpieces” just books that made you enjoy reading and want to continue.

Would love some beginner-friendly recommendations 🙌

What book would you recommend that everyone should read once in a lifetime?

If I have to recommend a book that you should read once in a lifetime, it would be Tuesdays with Morrie, a Book by Mitch Albom.

Maybe it was one of those books that finds you at the right time. Coz I really needed the guidance in my life.

This book follows the story of a journalist and his old, dying professor as they embark on their final thesis journey, reflecting on what truly matters in life. Honestly, reading this book feels like sitting with an elder, absorbing the wisdom they’ve gathered over a lifetime.

10/10 recommendation. What book would you recommend that people should read at least once?

Looking for books about some of the unsavory things the government has done

Mostly I'm thinking of the US/UK/Canada, and cold-war/war-on-terror/injustice towards indigenous populations sort of stuff, but that's certainly not all I'm open to. Other governments and contexts are definitely still things I'd like to read about.

I'm looking for something well-researched, written by someone who is NOT right wing, maga, or q-anon affiliated, and explains an event or prolonged undertaking that was ethically problematic, outright abhorrent, incompetent, or negligent, which was done by, with the aid of, or under the instruction of some part of the government (military, cia, kgb, etc).

It doesn't need to be the easiest to read (Imo I'd rather it be tough to decipher, convoluted, or have "too much" information than for it to leave something out or simplify the situation, if that makes sense), I don't care about the length really.

Other than that, ik it's not the most specific parameters, but I figure this way I'll get a wider variety of things to learn about.

~~(Any type of recommendation is welcome, but something I would be especially interested in is if anyone knows about books or info resources *specifically* about US military installations linked to spikes in cancers or birth defects or other medical issues due to whatever testing or experiments went on there. I have a personal connection to some possible effects from that sort of thing and want to know all I can in that regard)

chill, fun, adventurous fantasy recs please!

Hey folks
Just finished reading Of War and Ruin by Ryan Cahill and man was it awesome!
But having read so much action fantasy books with so much lore and world building, I want to cleanse my palette with something chill.
Maybe a standalone or a small series with funny characters on an adventure (action is optional).
Open to suggestions to any other fantasy or scifi books that are a breath of fresh air (even if these don't exactly fit this criteria)

Previous reads that I enjoyed:
Mistborn og trilogy
Bloodsworn saga
Warbreaker

Your favorite sci-fi/thriller/literary fiction/fantasy reads from the last 2-5 years

Hello readers!

I have a $100 B&N gift card that I have been holding on to for a while now that I would like to actually use. Unfortunately, my brain is having a difficult time making decisions and thinking of what to purchase lol

Would love to get some suggestions and see if it’ll help push me!

A smattering of books of different genres I have enjoyed:

- I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman
- Foundation by Isaac Asimov
- None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell
- My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell
- The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman (I’ve read the first two books in the series and I have the third one)
- The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd
- The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell by Robert Dugoni
- The Murmur of Bees by Sofia Segovia

A few examples of books I did not enjoy or was meh to me for reference as well:

- Normal People by Sally Rooney
- The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
- The Guest List by Lucy Foley
- The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang
- Atonement by Ian McEwan

Thank you in advance ❤️

Books on how to feel more empathy

Recently, through a conflict in my life I have realized a certain truth about myself. I lie to myself, a lot.

I would've liked to think of myself as someone who had a deeper connection with human life and suffering, but I don't. Through a lie I told to the world, a lie so fine that I believed it myself I tricked myself into believing I cared.

Simultaneously, I believed that I stood above others because I only felt empathy for the more reasonable things in life like death or heavy suffering. That people crying over small things were people who couldn't see how insignificant their problems were.

Yet when presented with what isn't even a significant issue I break, despite my initial prose of not caring or being too high to fall, I break. I'm no less vulnerable than the people around me.

I placed myself above others because I thought I cared more about wordly matters than them, believed myself superior because I couldn't be hurt or downed, but in reality I don't really care about anything other than myself. I'm fragile yet my ego is so high I trick myself into thinking I'm something else.

What I want I guess is a way for me to better understand how to feel for others and less about myself. To grow.

In search of quality smut

I've been reading some of the popular smut out there, but I am very disappointed by the quality of storytelling and, in particular, the quality of the actual smut scenes. They are rarely very descriptive, and the storylines are often undercooked. I'd love recommendations for some of the more serious erotic literature out there.

I need more books like this PLEASE

I just finished reading Gothikana and 3/4 books of the coven series, while I’m waiting for the last book PLEASE GIVE ME RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BOOKS LIKE THESE!!! I love the dark romance and slightly spooky vibe both of these books have. The dark academia mixed with some witchy vibes and mystery and intense romance are things I love in books and I really want to keep going on the highs these books gave me. I’m thinking of reading Nocticadia next but I sometimes read a whole book a day so I need more then just one book lol. Thank you!!

Good unique crime reads?

I love a good crime book, but i’m bored of the cliche stuff. Nothing involving a secret millionaire murder or big mafia stuff. Something more day to day like a morally grey narrator and low level crime. I think it would be interesting to read something where the mc isn’t just a victim or a detective. Also kinda bored of murder mystery as a whole I’m looking for something much smaller scale crime wise, where the focus is more on world building and unique characters inner struggle.

Recs similar to Blake Crouch / Marcus Sakey (Brilliance trilogy), and Ted Chiang / Ken Liu

Bucket 1, airport fiction lane: loved Dark Matter, Recursion, and Pines from Crouch (didn’t click with his others), plus Sakey’s Brilliance trilogy. High-concept, fast-paced sci-fi hooks, fast-paced sci-fi.

Bucket 2, on the other hand: Chiang / Ken Liu lane. Literary, idea-driven short fiction, philosophical, restrained, often melancholy. Already familiar with Three-Body Problem and Le Guin, so looking outside those.

Random side-note, I also really like Ken Grim wood’s Replay.

Tried a bunch of Goodreads lists and nothing stuck. There have to be more writers working these lanes, just need help finding them.

Here are my options, feel free to suggest your own:

- Maid (I saw the tv show so I don’t know if the book is different enough to be worth it)

Some recent books I have loved:
- Rebecca
- Project Hail Mary
- Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow
- There is No Anti-Memetics Division
- Educated

Surprising dislikes:

Is Juliet Barker’s The Brontës the best biography to start with?

I’m fascinated by the Brontë sisters — their lives, personalities, family dynamics, and the world they lived in.

I’ve heard Juliet Barker’s The Brontës is one of the most definitive, well-researched biographies. For someone who wants a serious historical account based on good sources, is Barker the best place to start? Or would you recommend a different book first?
