r/booksuggestions

My mom (52) struggles with literacy… she likely reads at 3rd or 4th grade level. I am working with her to strengthen her literacy. We want to read a book together. Any reccs?

I want something moving that could spark an interest in reading for her so preferably fiction to start this journey. Nothing with rape and nothing where animals die please.

Looking for space themed books that don’t have SA in them

Looking for book recommendations that take place in space!! I find unfortunately a LOT of popular sci-fi themed books come with a r—e scene or two and it’s just so unnecessary and uncomfortable. This includes arranged marriages where the girl is 14 and the dude is 57 or something similar (unless they escape), probing scenes I’m not a fan of, torture, or incest. I know it’s a tall order though it shouldn’t be. Like for example the primary reason I’m not reading Dune is because of all r—e and incest it’s got in it. Great story at least cinematically, I’ve loved the movies, but I have no interest in reading hardcore gore and torture.

I guess I’d be okay with reading brief scenes of incest BUT NOT PEDO, like if they were describing another planets cultures (still gross) but I don’t want the main character or secondary character having anything done to them.

I CAN deal with major character death, violence (again no active torture scenes though please), wars, cheating, grotesque shapeshifting. I just don’t need graphic r—e in my stories to emphasize that something is bad you know like damn. Anyways thank you if you guys have any recommendations! Literally anything space themed where the story actually takes place for the majority in space or other planets ect. I’m not too sensitive to this stuff so my priority is just, no r—e scenes and it takes place in space.

Middle grade and YA books

Hi everybody! I was not a big reader growing up but now I LOVE it. I feel like I missed out on a bunch of great middle grade and YA books and would love to close that gap. What books do you all recommend? I’ve already read the Percy jackson and Harry potter books.

Vampire novels with a female main character?

I enjoyed A Dowry of Blood (ST Gibson).
I didn’t like Lucy Undying (Kiersten White).
Of course I enjoyed the Twilight series when I was younger.
I also really enjoyed the Crave series (Tracy Wolff), though it was a bit cringey and more juvenile than I’d like.
I enjoyed The Southern Book Clubs Guide to Slaying Vampires (Grady Hendrix).

I LOVE LOVED Carmilla (Sheridan Le Fanu)

More books that are similar to my tastes? The main character doesn’t have to be the vampire, I just want (at least one) female main character AND a vampire somewhere in the story. Really what I want most is something that will give me the same vibes as Carmilla. (Gothic, classic, moody, romantic, etc)

Best Books to Get Out of Reading Slump

Hi everyone! I've unfortunately found myself in a pretty bad reading slump, and I was hoping to find some books to get myself back into reading, especially while I have the time to do so!

I read pretty much anything, from literary fiction to romance to horror/mystery/thriller books, etc. Feel free to recommend any of your favorite binge reads and page turners!! Thanks in advance :)

Favorite Non-Bestsellers?

We can all agree that best-selling lists are worthless. I can’t even think of any books that aren’t a NYT best seller. What are some of your favorite adult fiction books that explicitly DO NOT advertise themselves as a best-seller?

(I specified sci-fi because it’s my favorite genre, but I’ll read almost anything. I tend to avoid YA and romance. I’m absolutely fine with romance as a subplot, but it can’t carry a main plot for me and hold my attention)

Looking for books that span over a character’s life

I love sad. Fictional sad is even better, but I have come to realize I really really enjoy books that kinda just is a story about a characters life from a point to maybe their death or a future date.

Some examples are The Heart’s Invisible Furies, Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns, One Day, Normal People?, A Little Life, and Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow are a few examples of this. Would love to find more books like this! Doesn’t necessarily need to be sad but I find it already sad to have to finish reading about the character’s journey and detach from them

Recommend me a book based on my favorites

Hello I am new to this subreddit and the title sums up this post. I have some personal favorite books like:

- Night by Elie Wiesel

- The Kite Runner + A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

- Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl

- Chess Story by Stefan Zweig

- The Shining + The Green Mile by Stephen King

- And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

I am not really into romance driven plots and difficult English books (Similar to Blood Meridian's reading level)...

Minimal novels

I just finished Night Train to Tangier by Kevin Barry. It’s written in short paragraphs that just give you splotches of story, it’s almost like poetry but within the first couple of pages, I had a fully fleshed out movie running in my head. It was magical.
The writing style reminded me of Jenny Offil. The plots are completely different but the writing is similarly minimal. Just a few sentences and then on to the next paragraph but the writing is so strong, you can fill in the gaps. It’s thrilling.

Does anyone have a recommendation for something similar? Or know what this still of writing is called? Is this plotless fiction? I feel like they’re still good stories, not without plot.

Recommendations for very dark/bleak/violent science fiction works. (You don't have to suggest Harlan Ellison)

I recently got into reading novels again after about a decade of not reading at all. Started a few years ago with manga and have steadily made my way into full length novels again! My favorite work of all time as of now is the Second Apocalypse series by R. Scott Bakker. I really love a bleak, gruesome and nihilistic setting like that, also a huge plus for me is the incredible prose.

As far as sci-fi goes I've read "The Road", "I Have no Mouth and I must Scream", and my favorite is a manga called BLAME!

Is there anything that could scratch that Dark and dastardly Fantasy itch in a sci-fi setting?

A fiction about pest control/ bug extermination

It can be a romance, thriller, mystery or si-fi it doesn’t matter the genre, it doesn’t matter who the protagonist or antagonist is but I can’t seem to find anything at all?!!
Anybody have any kind of recommendation?!? Any kind of help would be sooo appreciated!
(My husband does pest control and I just feel like it’d be a really fun read. Plus if I like it I can give a copy to his bosses wife. lol)

Non Fiction For a Vacation Read

Looking for a non fiction read for a trip. I really like bios or really just anything about someone interesting. I tend to gravitate towards business/finance, but i'm also interested in sports and music. Again, I'll almost read anything if the person's story is interesting and real. Thank you

Book recommendations for a 11 year old

I've been thinking of getting my younger brother into reading, right now the only hobby he has is gaming and he's not interested in reading whatsoever except for a few manga he's read. Looking for some recommendations to get him into reading and hopefully keep him hooked long enough for it to turn into a habit or a semi habit at least. I'd prefer something that makes him think or maybe at least engaging enough to make him finish the whole thing and most importantly something that encourages empathy building and exposes him to other perspectives. Does anyone know any books I could get him to read?

What next after Andrew Roberts:Napoleon

I finished reading Andrew Roberts book and I loved it i learned a lot that I didn't know about Napoleon and now I want more.

I want to learn more about the period of history after Napoleon especially France and Europe and how it ties to the Bonaparte family. And also the period before the 1798 revolution as well.

So any book recommendation is welcome.

Books to get back into reading with

I'm a teen that's been trying to get back into reading but I'm having trouble finding a good place to start. I started Metro 2033 and while I love the world and adventure, the book felt lacking of meaningfull characters and relationships for me. I got halfway through that before I started feeling kind of burned out and I think I have to switch it up.

Some other media i like: The last of us, Lord of the rings, Breakin bad, Berserk, Neon genesis evangelion.

I love characters with interesting and deep relationships rather than worldbuilding or a deep and confusing plot. I still love deep worlds with tons of lore but i prefer it taking a backseat. I also love plot twists. I'd prefer a shorter length (maybe around 200 pages). It could be any genre but i like fantasy a lot, and also post-apocolyptic settings. Thanks

Recommendations for books like School for Good and Evil

I’ve been really obsessed with books that have fairytale settings like School for Good and Evil, Ever After High, and Descendants. Anyone know more stories like those where the main characters are descendants of fairytale characters?

Hoping for pirate WLW

I read Tomes and Tea a while back and while I absolutely loved it, I felt like I was kinda robbed of the pirate themes I was hoping for. There were maybe 2-3 scenes where they spent time on a ship on the sea and that was it, that was all.

I want moooore, especially if it's cozy and loving and maybe maybe a very mild spice?
