I (19F) and my bf (21M) initially said he wants to break up because we have no interests in common but after talking he’s changed his mind. How do I work on myself?
Me and my partner were what seemed to be completely fine, then next day he came over and made me read a note off his notes app basically saying how we shouldn’t be together because we have no common interests and how we could be with better people. I initially shut down and ask him to leave as I felt confused and to be honest, angry, so I had my breakdown, went out, got drunk, went home and suffered the next day. We needed up going on a walk and talking. Where he explained it’s because we didn’t open up, and how I didn’t enjoy going out much (I get anxiety from the thought of going places because I fear everything that could go wrong), and I explained that too him and how he could support me through it so we could do more, and he spoke about his issues and I explained to him, he can stay with his parents, he doesn’t have to be with me 24/7 I understand having time and nights apart is important! Especially since he has autism and struggles with self regulation. He just thought I’d get upset about it. He also expressed that I never showed interest in his music but I had automatically assumed he wanted it as his own sort of self soothing interest and would be frustrated if I involved myself.
I believe we just lacked communication.
He explained that he wants to find himself and he wants me to find myself too. So I asked, if we both work on ourselves, can we be together and he said yes.
I’m just really confused where we stand in the relationship and I don’t want him to think I’m ignoring what he’s saying, I’m just really confused on where we stand and what we are.
But I also don’t know where to start with working on myself, here are some of my faults I’ve noticed in myself.
I become too involved in my phone and will often choose my phone over him.
I have no hobbies.
I struggle showing affection due to not receiving much as a child.
I struggle taking topics seriously due to again my issues as a kid being down played as a joke so I just think it’s normal.
I don’t enjoy walks like he does but I really want to get into them.
How can I work on getting out of bad habits and improving myself, not only for him but for me because they’re not healthy habits to have for me as a person.
